General Notes: Husband -

A typewritten obituary as well as the newspaper clipping, states "that wh en Richard was 2 years of age, his parents moved to VA where they resided until he was 12 years old, when they emigrated by wagon to Jefferson Co, IL, where they soon located on the farm where he died. In his early twenties, he began the study of medicine, later practicing in old Farrington and Belle Rive, but the doctor's life was too much for his physical strength, so after a few years of practice, he retired and took up farming which occupation he followed the remainder of his life". "Gaston, as he was called in his younger days, held several offices and places of trust, which he discharged with unyielding fidelity, He was commonly called Uncle Doc in his later years. Violet (Varner) Wall has noted in the family bible, that Richard Gaston died on February 5, 1936, instead of February 6. she also said he is buried at Newhope Cemetery. Richard was first a doctor and then a farmer. I don't know when he quit being a doctor but in Henry and Violet's marriage write up, it stated he was still a doctor then in 1926.(jmw)

Lee Goodnight is the great grandson of John Henry Goodnight, who came with his family to the Stones Prairie community in 1855. These pioneers bought their land from the railroad and made their home. Later one acre of land was given for a cemetery, known as the Goodnight Cemetery and another acre was given for New Salem Church. Jarvis Lee Goodnight lived on this same farm and was secretary of the Goodnight Cemetery Assn. He received a plaque in 1976 in recognition of the pioneer families, who throught their faith and work, had remained on their land through the first 200 years of our country.

Rev. William Francis Goodnight b. Jan 9, 1872 d. Jan 6, 1954, and his wife Mollie Robberson b. Sep 19, 1879 d. Apr 15, 1966 were no doubt the most respected, widely known, and dearly loved, of all in their generation, which spaned 82 years. They were married Sep 28, 1896.
He was a Methodist Evangelist preacher for 42 years, and preached the sunday before he died on Wednesday, with a heart attack at the age of 82. I have heard him say that he felt the call to preach for some time, which he resisted. They had two Daughters, Gladys & Atrel who were 10 to 12 years old. He finally promised God that if God would give him a son, he would heed the calling and preach. A son, Linley Elbert was born Oct 24, 1911, and Rev. Goodnight started preaching soon thereafter.
He preached his first sermon in his home church "New Salem". I have heard him say his text was "We ought to obey God rather than man" Acts 5-29. He said although the congregation gave him encouragement and congradulations, he knew he didn't do very well, but Acts 5-29 was the text for his life for the next 42 years. He became the area's most noted evangelist, preaching the old time, heart felt religion. He believed in the Grace of God, forgiveness of sin, and intercessory prayer. His favorite song was "Amazine Grace".
His ministry was before the time of Radio & TV, so he got himself a tent, and held tent meetings from Northeast OK to central MO. Always a Methodist, he was not a strong denominationalist. He preached, Christ died and was raised for the sins of all men. Rev. George Lasswell joined Rev. Goodnight in about 1932, and they worked together for some time. They had a new tent and a Delco lighting system. Some of the places they held meetings are: Sycamore School Yard in NE OK, Haymes Chapel, North of Marshfield, MO, Warden Chapel, also North of Marshfield, MO, Marshall, MO, Longlane, MO, Rogersville, MO, Hickory Chapel, West of Lincoln, MO, and Cole Camp, MO.
William Henry Wormington, a brother-in-law of Rev. Goodnight, was in the Monument business at Purdy, MO and had a Model T Truck. Some of the time he would use the truck to haul the tent and other equipment needed. He would then go back in a week or two and bring the equipment home. Mr. Lee Goodnight also did some driving for Rev. Goodnight.
At that time a traveling Evangelist wasn't the highest paid profession. Rev. Goodnight has told the story that both he and his family at home were out of money at a certain time. He was finishing a meeting and the congregation presented him with a new bible, when he got to where he could open and look at it, there was paper money scattered all through the pages.
Mrs. Goodnight (Aunt Mollie) was always a perfect ministers wife. Her faith was as true and strong as his. She was always the pillar of the church, until her passing in 1966.
Rev. Goodnight's funeral Jan 9, 1954 was a typical January day, very cold. The building was full, with people standing. There was a speaker system for outside and many people stood outside. The service was conducted by Rev. Ralph Roland, who was then District Superintendant of the Methodist Church of Southwest MO.
There were people who came from OK, AR, KS, to central MO. Rev. Roland asked for a show of hands of those who were led to Christ by Rev. Goodnight. It was estimaged 75% of the congregation raised their hands. The obit stated that 10,000 people had been converted through Rev. Goodnights Ministery. Both he and Mollie are buried at Purcy Cemetery.
A man of God had served his time on earth in the service of his God. He departed to his home not made with hands, which he had no doubt was prepaired for him. All who knew him would mourn his passing.

General Notes: Wife -

Ruby Marie Goodson, 94, of Horse Shoe died Sunday, March 6, 2005, peacefully in her beloved home surrounded by her children and loved ones. Although she died of complications from breast cancer, she had successfully fought the disease for more than 14 years.

She was born Dec. 2, 1910, in Sevierville, Tenn., one of nine children of Lavator Ware Mitchell, 1882-1952, and Josephine Brown Mitchell, 1888-1953. She was preceded in death by four siblings, Helen Ornate Mitchell, Rex Donald Mitchell, Delma Louise Patton and Juanita Razee. The Mitchell family moved to Canton in 1929. She met Lon Raymond Goodson soon after and they were married Jan. 1, 1934. After several years with Champion Paper and Fiber Co., they ventured into the automobile business and started Goodson Pontiac. In 1956, her husband bought Hi-Oaks Farm, a property that he had been "eyeing" for many years. The family "retired" to the farm and immediately took over the dairy business. They sold Goodson Pontiac in 1959. They farmed for 20 years, with Hi-Oaks Farm becoming one of the larger dairy farms in the valley. She refurbished the home, making it a showplace. She entertained hundreds in her home at dinners, bridge parties, summer lunches, Sunday dinners, showers, picnics and family reunions. She welcomed every person lovingly, joyfully and generously. She never knew a stranger. Although her husband died in 1992 at age 87, she continued to entertain friends, family and strangers and cherish her home. She missed her husband's earthly presence but carried his strength and love always in her heart. She was able to stay in her home until her death, especially enjoying the help of her daughter and son-in-law who lived near by.

She is survived by three children, Raymond Eugene Goodson and his wife, Susie Elizabeth, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Lynn Marie Hinkle and her husband, Don, of Horse Shoe and Ann Mitchell Goodson and her husband, Kevin R. Daley, of New York City; four siblings, Morris Eugene Mitchell of Canton, Lois Annette Mills of Houston, Texas, Fred Brown Mitchell of Alabama and Elizabeth Ann Gilbert of Durham; and grandchildren, Kathryn Elizabeth Goodson and her husband, John C. Hieftje, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Kenneth Eugene Goodson and his wife, Laura Dahl, of Belmont, Calif., Ann Lee Bryant of Atlanta, and John Everett Bryant Jr. and his wife, Kelly, of Little Rock, Ark.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Hendersonville. The Rev. Dr. Gordon Elliott will officiate. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The body will lie in repose from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Thos.
