CHIEF GAIL GOFORTH OF FIRE DEPARTMENT
Services for Gail M. Goforth, 55, of 4174 Oak Road, a District Fire Chief with the Memphis Fire Department who died Saturday night at home, will be at 1 p.m. today at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery East.
Chief Goforth, who worked his way up from the rank of private, celebrated his 35th anniversary with the Memphis Fire Department Aug 16. He joined the department on that day in 1942.
Deputy Chief J. R. Smith, a long-time friend and co-worker said Goforth was "A good steady officer" who never failed to show once during his career.
Goforth battled fires until the day he died. He led the first unit to arrive at a fire at the Blues alley Restaurant on November 6th Street which occurred at 5:44 a.m. Saturday. He died about 9 p.m., after fighting the fire.
After being promoted to driver in 1949, Goforth made lieutenant in 1950, captian in 1953, and then district chief in 1961.
He was a member of Pendleton Presbyterian Church, was a World War II veteran and member of the American Legion.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Ann Goforth; a daughter, Mrs. William R. Stoddard of Memphis; two brothers, J. M. Goforth and Claude E. Goforth, both of Memphis; three sisters, Mrs. R. H. Petty and Mrs. George Bishop, both of Memphis and Mrs. Ruby Stevens of Las Vegas; and one grandchild.

ANN STAINBACK GOFORTH, 89, of Bartlett, TN, died Saturday, October 15, 2005 at the Ave Maria Nursing Home in Bartlett.
She was a member of Advent Presbyterian Church, Zachariah Davies Chapter, Daughters, of the American Revolution, member of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century and Magna Charta Dames.
Mrs. Goforth was the widow of Gail Goforth, District Chief, Memphis City Fire Department and is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Stoddard and her husband William, a grandson, William G. Stoddard, and his wife Karen, three great-grandchildren, Anna, Ethan and Ryan Stoddard and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 16, 2005, at Forest Hill Funeral Home East from 5 - 7 p.m.

GOFORTH, HAROLD WALTON, formerly of Ocala, died Tuesday March 30 at his home in Gainesville, FL. He was 83 years old. Mr. Goforth was born in Winder, GA and moved to Orlando, FL before 1931. He graduated from Orlando Senior High School in 1939 after serving as class president for all four years of high school. He went on to the University of Florida where he was President of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and graduated in 1943 with a degree in business administration. Later he attended graduate schools at the University of North Carolina and the University of Indiana. From 1943 until 1946 he was a member of the U.S. Army and served as combat officer and division liaison officer for the 765th Infantry Division of the 1st U.S. Army (European theater), where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the EAME ribbon with three stars, the Victory medal and Army of Occupation Ribbon. After the war, he served as manager of the Mt. Dora Fla. Chamber of Commerce and the St. Augustine, Fla. Chamber of Commerce before moving to Ocala, FL as the manager of the Ocala Chamber of Commerce from 1949 until 1955. He then moved to the same job in Panama City, FL. He is a former president of the Florida Chamber of Commerce Executive Association. In 1960, Goforth spearheaded a group of local businessmen who formed Fidelity Federal Savings and Loan where he served as President and Chairman of the Board until he retired in 1985. During his career in Ocala Goforth served numerous community organizations. He was chairman of the Ocala Public Library Board, district vice president of the University of Florida Alumnae Association, director of the Ocala/Marion County Chamber of Commerce, president and campaign chairman of the Marion County United Way, chairman of the Central Florida Regional Library Board, president of the Ocala Rotary Club, member of the Florida Quadricentennial Commission, vice chairman of the Downtown Development Commission, trustee of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at the University of Florida. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ocala, Ocala Elks Lodge, Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club, Metropolitan Ocala Rotary Club, Sons of the American Revolution and most recently the Quarterback Club of Gainesville, FL. In retirement he was a Master Gardener through the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service in Marion County for 15 years. Goforth was an avid camellia grower and participated and judged in numerous camellia shows throughout Florida, Georgia and Mississippi. He also worked with the Marion County Senior Services organization. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margaret Harn Goforth of Gainesville, FL; a brother, Alan H. Goforth of Gainesville, FL; sons Hal W. Goforth of San Diego, CA, and Sam II, Goforth of Gainesville, FL; a daughter, Margaret G. Glass of Spring Hill, GA; eight grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Arrangements by Williams Thomas Funeral, Gainesville, FL. A Memorial Service for Mr. Goforth will be held Saturday, April 3, 1:30PM at the First Methodist Church of Ocala with Rev. William Owens officiating. The Family will receive friends following the service. Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to a favorite charity.

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Dolleta was born Sept. 22, 1913in Cleveland County. Following high school graduation, she met and subsequently married John William Goforth of Stony Point. After several years, the couple and only child, Nancy Sue Goforth, moved to Gastonia where John worked for Plantation Pipeline, until his premature death in 1959. Dolleta remained in Gastonia for several years before moving to her family?s home in Lawndale. There, she renewed her family and girlhood relationships and joined local organizations, including, Eastern Star and Polkville Methodist Church. In addition to community and family involvement, her greatest joy was tending to her gardens and flowers, and putting up canned goods that she generously shared with family and neighbors for decades. Independent of mind and spirit, Dolleta lived alone with self-reliant determination after her 90th birthday.
