Glaze <glazej@polarcomm.com> I have a book, "History of the Glaze and Butcher Families: From Early 1880's to 1944: that I got from my grandfather, Guy Henry Glaze and Grandmother, Marvel Hugg Glaze. It begins with Henry and Sophia but does not have the detailed birth/death info for them:
"Our record of the Glaze family dates back to the [ ] years of the 1800s. They orignally came from England. Our record begins with Henry Glaze, who married S[ophia] Means. There is a story that the first M[eans] who ca me to America was a young man who was a member [ ] very wealthy family in England. One night he was sent to [ ] well to get some water in a very expensive pitcher. The w[ ] the well was mad of polished marble. He fell and broke [ ] pitcher: and rather than go back to the house and be repri[mand]ed, he ran away and came to America. Well maybe he i[] head of the American Means family from which we claim a g[rand]mother. At the time Sophia Means met Henry Glaze, they [were] both natives of Lewis Co (West) Virginia. They were [mar]ried and made their home in Lewis co[unty] but moved to Roanoke Co during the 1850s, and establish[] home on Spring Creek about ten miles north of S[]pencer. Sophia Means was methodical person, a pe[] housekeeper and was noted throughout the community for [ ] kind gentle nature. She had a beautiful singing voice. Thi[]ent was inherited by several of her children, even down to the present generation. They [] ripe old age having reared a family of eight chldren, [] girls and five boys:"
The book is dated June, 1945 and compliled by Blanche M. Bartlett of Charleston W. Virginia.
"The scouts took to the field immediately and began to take casualties. Their first loss was John McMullen, "a meritorious soldier" of the 9th WVA, who was killed at the home of Henry Glaze, the father of scout Stephen Glaze. They lived in Roane Co, where the bushwhackers were thick and the scouts had stopped at the house to pay a visit. Stephen's brother Marshall, who was home on sick furlough from the 13th WVA Infantry, was also slain in the surprise attack."
My book has a (poor) picture of Marshall Glaze with a caption that says, "Killed by Bushwhackers" Jeff Glaze
General Notes: Wife -
The first Grandmother Glaze, Sophia Means Glaze, was a very neat and orderly housekeeper. She indeed had a place for everything and everything was in its place. Once she had a "hired girl" staying with her and she told the girl to scrub the water bucket. It was a wooden bucket in which they kept well water in the kitchen. The girl seemed much surprised that she wanted the water bucket scoured and said, "why scour the water bucket, Mrs. Glaze? It will just get dirty again
Sophia was known for her beautiful singing voice. Marshall had the following brothers and sisters

Born: 4 May 1863 - Roane Co, WV Christened: Died: Buried:Spouse: George F. Hess Marr: 19 Feb 1880 - Roane Co, WV
General Notes: Husband -
In 1863 he was sent home on "sick furlough" and was not able to be out of bed when there was a group of Southern "Bushwhackers" rode up to the house looking for him. They had come to kill. It must have been a dramatic scene to see and hear his aged father begging them to take him and to leave Marshall, as Marshall was a young man with a family, while he was an old man and had already lived a long life. His pleadings were in vain. Marshall and Jane Wilt Glaze had two daughters
Marshall W. Glaze was born about 1835 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, the son of Henry and Sophia (Means) Glaze. His parents came to Roane County about 1856. His father was born January 18, 1804, and died February 12, 1876 His mother was born May 11, 1808 and died in 1895. Sophia was known for her beautiful singing voice. Marshall had the following brothers and sisters: Stephen S., Isaac M., Henry Granville, Sarah, and Eliza.
Emily Jane Wilt married Marshall W. Glaze on December 10, 1859 in Gilmer County, (West) Virginia. Emily was 16 years old and Marshall was 23. After their marriage they moved to Roane County, West Virginia where she spent the rest of her life. Marshall and Emily appear in the 1860 Gilmer County Census and were neighbors of Emily's parents.
Marshall and two of his brothers, Isaac M., and Stephen S. served in the Federal Army in the Civil War. His brother, Henry G. served as a private in the Home Guard. Marshall enlisted in the Co C 11th WV Infantry USA in 1861, shortly after moving to Roane County.
Marshall was killed by Confederate guerrillas at the home of his father on Spring Creek, September 10, 1863. Some said he was shot through a window while others said he was killed in the yard. No skirmish was reported have taken place at his father's house. For whatever reason, Private Glaze was fighting in defense of home and family when he lost his life at the hands of partisan rangers.
Perhaps the reason for the killing took root before the war, as grievance and personal feuds grew along with the conflict. His death could have been the result of many skirmishes between Company C of the 11th Infantry and the Moccasin Rangers.
Troops were assigned to protect a branch of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad which bisected the county. Spencer was an important transportation junction as well as command post for several 11th Infantry companies. The 11th Infantry assignment in the county was as General Benjamin Kelley had commanded: "To kill, capture, or disperse the guerilla band frequenting the area."
Arnoldsburg, Calhoun County was composed of starch secessionist sympathizers and served as a rendezvous point for several Confederate guerilla bands. Men from these small communities had belonged to the 186th Virginia Militia prior to the war. When hostilities broke out in the spring of 1861, these men found themselves at war with life-long friends and neighbors. As a result many men from the Spencer area chose to fight for the Union, while those living in and around Arnoldsburg developed their own tactics in dealing with the Union.
George Downs often joined forces with the Moccasin Rangers, lead by self-appointed Captain Perry Conley. In numerous raids and assaults against the 11th (Union) Infantry. In November 1861, a close encounter did take place which resulted in a ruthless vendetta by the Moccasins against Company C of the 11th Infantry.
A 28-man detachment, under the command of Captain James Simpson, was sent on an expedition up the Little Kanawha River to flush out and arrest some of the more active partisan rangers. Atop a ridge, between the forks of the Sycamore Road the two forces met and a firefight ensued as advanced Union troops sough shelter in a nearby schoolhouse, while the Moccasins took advantage of the forest a natural fortifications. After a 45 minute skirmish, little damage was done to either side. The Confederates were forced to retreat. One ranger, to seriously wounded to retreat, had propped himself up in a fence corner. Instead of rendering aid to the dying man, as the principles of a gentleman's war dictate, four members of Company C raised their rifles fired – killing the ranger.
After the Sycamore skirmish, four members of Company C were murdered while enroute to or at their homes. It was suspected the Moccasins were responsible. One of these soldiers was Private Marshall Glaze. It is impossible to determine whether Private Glaze had anything to do with the execution of the wounded Confederate. No records of prosecution against the four Company C men who were responsible has yet to be found.
Perhaps the killing resulted in a random fashion when Union troops were caught away from the safety of their companies, striking at the enemy's most vulnerable point – the family. Perhaps Marshall was protecting his young wife, Emily Jane, and his daughters. Emily Jane may have witnessed the death the death of her husband. Marshall Glaze now rests in a wooded area near the old house with a government-issued military marker inscribed Private Marshall W. Glaze, Company C 11th West Virginia Infantry as the only identification.
Marshall Glaze's death left Emily Jane a widow at age 19, with two young daughters to raise. Marshall and Emily were the parents of Mary S. and Henrietta.
Mary S., known as Mollie, was born in about 1862 and married Rev. Henry Kiser Riffe, August 15, 1888 in Roane County. Henry K. Riffe was the son of William David and Harriett (Boggess) Riffe and was a regular preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church of West Virginia. He had the city of Spencer churches for one or more years and was also stationed at Parkersburg, West Virginia.
Henrietta was born about 1863 and married George Hess, February 22, 1880 in Roane County. George (1853-1934) was the son of Hiram and Mary (Fitzwater) Hess. George and Henrietta were the parents of seven children: Floral (1882) married Dr. Ross Dodson; Sophia (1883-1889); Beryl Susan (1892) George W. Wells on August 18, 1915; Harry Ray (1889) married Bly Davis on March 22, 1919; Eva Kate (1895) married John B. Combs on June 13, 1917; and Marshall Hobert (1886).
General Notes: Wife -
Emily Jane McGraw was born October 19, 1844 at Westernport, Maryland. She departed this life August 31, 1938, at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 12 days. She was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Warwick) Wilt. She was married three times.
First to Marshall Glaze in 1860 at which time they moved to Roane County where she spent the remainder of her life. To this union was born two daughters, Mollie (now deceased) who married Rev. H. K Riffe and Henrietta who married the late George Hess of Spencer. Mr. Glaze was killed during the Civil War in 1863.
In 1866 she was married to James Epling. To this union was born five children as follows: G.M. Epling of Ivydale; Mrs. W.F. Valentine of Spencer; F.J. Epling of Otto; W.J. Epling of Looneyville and J.D. Epling of Camden-on-Gauley.
Mr. Epling died in 1877 and in 1887 she was married to Thompson McGraw and to this union was born one daughter, Mrs. H. J. Young of near Reedy, with whom she made her home at the time of her death.
Mr. McGraw preceded her in death 16 years ago. She confessed Christian conversion in early childhood and joined the M.P. Church. And in after years she with her husband, Thompson McGraw joined the Advent Christian church from which she was a loyal and faithful member until God called her away. She was not permitted to attend church, as she desired to due to old age. We like to think of her not only as a Christian but also a loving and devoted mother and one who always loved her children. She lived in the Sunflower community for several years and will be sadly missed among her neighbors and friends. Surviving are seven children, some step children, forty two grandchildren, forty three great grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the Pleasant Grove church in the presence of a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends. Rev. E.S. Warren and Rev. J. D. Cumberledge officiated after which the body laid to rest in a nearby cemetery.
Through we have tried not to worry nor grieve for one so dear to us, for we feel she is safe in the arms of Jesus. Still we are so lonely, when the shades of night gather and the busy days are over. 'Tis then we think of her so dear who has gone from us. Mother not dead, she is just asleep in Jesus.
On the Resurrection morn, she will come fourth to meet us. Someday, we will meet mother inside the pearly gates.
Thy glorious warfare is past. The battle fought, the race is won. And thou art crowned at last.

Film # 025634, Line 105--Elwood Ward Record MARRIAGE: Not recorded DEATH: Not recorded LDS Baptism, Endowment: Archive Record and John Madison Haws Journal. LDS Sealing: Temple Archive Record John Madison Haws History John Madison Haws was born 24 March 1847 in Wayne Co, Illinois, the thirte enth child in a family of fourteen, son of Gilberth and Hannah Whitcomb Haws. As a child of eighteen months, he crossed the Plains with his parent arriving in Salt Lake Valley the 23 Sept. 1848. In March 1849, the family joined the Saints who were sent to colonize Utah Valley. His father homesteaded a tract of land and became one of the best farmers in the valley. John Madison grew up on the farm and with the other members of the family, learned to work, for work they must if they were to survive. He must have been an unusual and reliable young man for at nineteen years of age he was called to go back to Winter Quarters to be Captain of a company of saints coming to Salt Lake. He had previously married Martha Bitner Glazier on 6 March 1866. Upon his return the young couple moved to the small community of Mona in Juab Co, [Utah]. On 22 Nov. 1869, he married as his second wife, Laura Jane Partridge, of Goshen, Utah. Family life in the little community of Mona, was typical of all small pioneer towns and it was hard work for all members of a family just to eke out an existence and John Madison's was no exception. In 1877 John Madison Haws was called and ordained the first Bishop of Mona. He served the ward until 1886, when because of living plural marriage he was forced into exile from the state. It must have been a sad parting for they knew not when they would be reunited as a family. Taking his two oldest sons, Kimball and Dean, they left in a covered wagon, pulled by four horses, heading north for Salt Lake City. Here they camped on the old Church camping grounds long enough to buy supplies for the long journey ahead which was to take them into the state of Montana, some 500 miles away. Arriving at Butte, they soon found work with their teams on the railroad that was being built at that time, later moving to Helena on the same job. The first winter they camped in tents on the shores of the Missouri River, where, at times, the weather would dip to 40° below zero and was remembered as a most severe winter. As spring broke their work took them back to Butte where they settled down to start on a home for the family who was expected to join them as soon as possible. As time went by they acquired several more teams of horses and huge freight wagons, by which they contracted to haul freight and ore from the mines and became known as the contracting Mormons. Time went by and for five long years they were without family ties and church except for an occasional visit of a missionary or the saints as they would be passing through to and from Canada. This was a trying time, especially for the two sons, Kimball and Dean, as the temptations that surrounded them were many and not easy to withstand, and did make some imprint on their future lives. By 1891 a suitable home had been built and much property acquired in Butte and here the first wife joined them and became a home away from home for the missionaries, Church Authorities and saints traveling through. At this same period of time there was much unrest in the United States, starting with the terrible steel strike in Pennsylvania. The western farmers were saddled with mortgages and were fighting for lower freight rates on the railroads. The U.S. Treasury had been reduced from $10,000,000 to $2,000,000 in less than a year. Grover Cleveland was again elected President of his Nation now almost bankrupt. Gold was being hoarded, businesses were failing, banks closed their doors, the western silver mines shut down and by the winter of 1893-4, thousands were jobless, hundreds were starving and bread-lines were forming across the nation. A railroad strike was spreading; the troops were sent out which caused much commotion and bloodshed. Butte was hard hit and in these few short years the family had been together, their properties and possessions crumbled around them and they lost all they had acquired over the years. On the 6 Oct. 1890 the MANIFESTO (the forbidding of plural marriage in the Church) was presented to the saints and unanimously adopted. All brethren of the Church could now return back to their homes in Utah. John Madison Haws had no home, he made a new start for his families. With his son, Dean, he left Butte in the spring of 1894 once more to go ahead and see what could be done to make a home for his families in Utah. Upon their arrival in Salt Lake City, they found a home near Beck's Hot Springs and immediately sent for the family to join them, but soon after becoming settled again most of the family became very ill with typhoid fever. For days and into weeks little hope was given for various members? lives, but their home was one of faith and all recovered. The condition of the home, they felt, had been the cause so they found better living quarters upon the Avenues and moved once more. The current depression had also hit Salt Lake, for here too bread-lines were forming, industries were tottering, and men were begging for work and there was little to be found. Because they had teams and wagons and many hands, they were fortunate to find work. Their first job was for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad at their coal yards, working four teams of horses for $1.50 per day, delivering coal around the city. To better care for their teams with a feed yard near by, they found a home on Folsom Avenue on North Temple between lst and 2nd East. Added work was found bringing wood out of City Creek Canyon, sawing and splitting it up which they furnished to all the City schools. Because of Kimball's ability and experience with horses, he was given work with the City Fire Department. Also under contract they hauled fill dirt for the new City and Co building that was to be built. A Brother Roe, a convert from England, heard of the plight of the family. He knew John Madison because it was his brother Caleb who had brought the Gospel to him and it was at his home that Caleb passed away while on his mission in England. Brother Roe was president of The Corrine Bills and Stock Company, also owning and operating a model farm in Corinne in Box Elder Co and he had also acquired much land to the north in the Bear River Valley were a canal had been dredged out thus opening up new farm land. Needing help on the farm, he gave John Madison the opportunity to move his family there which he did, and worked the farm during the year 1895. In the spring of 1894 John Madison Haws contracted for the purchase of 480 acres of land from Brother Roe in what was known as Elwood, eighteen miles to the North. Here they lived in tents until the bitter cold of the winter which forced them to move to a home in Brigham City were they lived until a suitable home could be built on the farm. A log house was first built which serve as a temporary home while they were constructing a large seven-room adobe brick, the brick being made from clay pits on their own land. In 1899 the father was called on a mission to the Southern States where he served as Conference President. He spent much of his time in North Carolina. While serving as a missionary he became very ill and was cared for and nursed back to health in the home of one of his converts, Brother Rufus Tyner. The Tyner family followed him back to Utah. Not far from the big brick home John Madison built a little home which the children knew as the red brick home for his second wife, known to all as Aunt Laura. She was a little lady and always made one welcome in her home. She was the mother of seven children all of whom were married. The first wife, Martha was a large woman, always kind but with a certain air of nobility that made you look up to her. She had been a real pioneer mother all her life, sacrificing much for her husband and family. She passed away on the 30 Jan. 1912 always a faithful Latter Day Saint. Aunt Laura moved into the big home to care for her husband. The Tyner family was sent for to help run the farm for about this time his sons and daughters, all but Kimball, sold their property and moved into Idaho. After about two years of carrying on at the farm, John Madison's health began to fail and he and his wife Laura moved into the little red brick house and Kimball took over the farm and moved into the big red brick home. On 28 June 1916 John Madison passed away leaving a posterity of fourteen children and eighty-eight grandchildren, his life having been one of service to his church and his families. He was a stern old gentleman in his beliefs, yet he had a sense of humor that all loved. His wife, Laura, all alone now, soon left the farm to make her home with her daughter Eliza Nyhart in Portland, Multnomah Co, OR. Here she passed away on the 25 May 1945 at the ripe old age of 94.
