Frances Westmoreland Gatton, 91, of Jurney's Assisted Living, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009. She was born June 21, 1918, in Iredell County, daughter of the late Julian Alonzo and Nettie Dellinger Westmoreland. Mrs. Gatton was twice married, first to the late Caldwell Bell, and to this union a daughter was born, Garnet Bell Johnson, who preceded her in death, in 1996. Her second marriage was to the late Marvin James Gatton, and to this union a son was born, Phillip Gatton, of Salisbury. Mrs. Gatton was also preceded in death by siblings, Carlton and J.C. Westmoreland, Nellie Josey, Lela Lackey, Thelma Gardner and Virginia Russell. Surviving, in addition to her son, Phillip, is a sister, Martha Price, of Charlotte; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Graveside services celebrating Frances' life are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday in Oakwood Cemetery, with the Rev. John Parks officiating. There will be no formal visitation, but the family will speak with friends, following services, at Oakwood Cemetery. William's obituary states he mother died while he was a child, and that he was the youngest of 10 children. One of his brothers, John, was killed Feb. 8, 1865 in South Caroline during the Civil War.

His obituary also states that William was a U.S. rural mail carrier for Rt. 1 from the Stoutsville post office for over 14 years.

General Notes: Wife -

Newspaper clippings by Marilyn Justus Reichelderfer include one of the obituary for Isabel Stout. It states that was was conversing with family members on the morning of Jan. 2, 1913 and suddenly died, at the age of 67 years 8 months and 10 days. Aside from the children of Isabel and William Gearhart, the obituary also states there were "two daughters by marriage" - implying that Isabel was William's second wife.

Information for biography copied from newspaper clippings of the Princevil le Telephone and remembrances collected by my mother, Eleanor Ruth Harrison Parker.

Wilbur was on a judging team from Dunlap High School, as well as 120 boys from other high schools teaching agricultural courses in Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties who participated in the annual section judging contest held in el Paso. Dunlap was in their first year of training, and they placed second among all the schools. They were beaten by a few points by the team from Metamora.

However, Dunlap received a few awards. Robert Ballou received the blue ribbon as the best poultry judge. Hirlo Hicks took the blue ribbon as the all around judge in meet of horses, beef cattle, sheep and hogs. Also, Hicks won first prise in the beef cattle judging, third in hogs, and tied for forth with Wilbur Harrison in judging horses. Wilbur also placed fifth in judging hogs . . . Hirlo Hicks, Wilbur Harrison and Raymond Brown all did well enough to win a third team ribbon in judging fat stock, including horses, beef, cattle, sheep and hogs.

Wilbur was also on the varsity wrestling team, and during the consolation matches in spring wrestling, and during a two period rough and tumble matches Wilbur won by taking the heels of Murphy and his shoulders to the mat to the floor for 24 second count.

He was also on the basketball team.

When Wilbur wasn't playing sports, he participated in school plays. One of them was "What Happened t Jones" and he played the part of Thomas Holder.

Wilbur graduated from Dunlap High School in 1929.

Wilbur and Elwyna were married at the Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Church, Peoria, Peoria Co, IL. The reception was held at her parent's home.

Elwyna was a graduate of Manual Training high school.

Sometime after Wilbur married he was riding a horse and he was thrown off, injuring one knee severely and Wilbur was advised by his doctor to stay in bed for two weeks.

Wilbur sold a dog and it was shipped overseas to Mrs. Betty Conrad who lived in Lebanon. The dog was a nine month old registered German Shepherd. The dog was sent by train to New York and from there by plane to Lebanon.

Mrs. Conrad was a former Peoria resident and with her husband spent the holidays with relatives in the states. At that time, Mr. Conrad was connected with the export department of LeTourneau in Peoria and was stationed in Lebanon. They bought the dog for companionship and protection to Mrs. Conrad.

Wilbur age 83 at time of death. Died at 1:21 p.m. on Thursday, at Proctor Hospital, Peoria, Peoria Co, IL.

Grave side services was held at 2 p.m. There was no visitation. Internment at the Jubilee Churchyard Cemetery. Rev. Ron Dickinson officiated. Arrangements were made by Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria.
