Just a note to advise you of erroneous data. In tracing my Ashley roots, I noticed my grandmother's name is incorrect. John Garner Ashley married Edna Eldora Peck. She was not a Griffin. Her mother married Frank Griffin after having two girls by a man named Peck. We have little information about him; he apparently left the family and went to New York. At any rate, Edna's maiden name was Peck Joel Ashley Email 1/31/2006

MOCKSVILLE - Sylvia Annette Myers Ashley, 72, of Mocksville died Friday, September 10, 2010 at her home. She was born February 23, 1938 in Forsyth County, the daughter of the late James Rufus and Sophia Frye Myers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Francis White; a grandson, Brandon Lee 'Bub" Ashley; and a sister-in-law, Carrie Myers. She leaves to cherish her memory two brothers, Jr. Myers and wife, Dot and Chuck Myers; her former husband, Kenneth Ashley, Florida. Her children, Penny Ashley, Danny Ashley and wife, Margie, Tina Craig and husband, Stanley, Kenneth Ashley and wife, Angela, Dorothy Roig and Gerri; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; many cousins and her special friends, Stella, Marty and Doris. A Graveside Service will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel in Clemmons with the Rev. Jerry Russell officiating. Alice E. Ashurst, 90, of 1007 S. Pear St. died at 10:20 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Havana Healthcare Center. Born Sept. 26, 1908, in Isabel Township to Abraham "Abe" and Lilian Leonard, she married Lloyd C. Ashurst on June 2, 1923. Surviving are one daughter, Kathleen Skaggs Mowder of Havana; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren. Three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Havana. She was a waitress at Lakewood Town House & Club in Normandy. She also worked as a bookkeeper at the Pepsi Cola Plant and for Dr. Donald Stehr's office. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hurley Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Smith will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to her church's Elevator Fund.

Joseph Jasper Hendrix, known as "Jasper", according to census records, was born in KY in 1853 and died about 1926 in Roff, Pontotoc Co, OK. Jasper married Mary Jane Belle Askew, daughter of Murrell Askew and Eliza Wright Askew in 1873 in Lauderdale Co, AL. Their first three children were born in AL. About 1879 they moved to Indian Territory, OK as evidenced by statements made by Jasper to the Dawes Commission and birth records of subsequent children. They were in the Wapanucka, OK area by about 1890 and moved to Roff, Pontotoc Co, OK, Indian Territory about 1902. In 1905 Jasper and Belle divorced. He lived alone for several years but moved in with his son in law and daughter Joe and Zora Daniel a few years before his death by sucide. Zora and grandson W.O. Daniel were the only people at home when Jasper took his life. According to W.O., Jasper was sitting on the front porch with a .22 caliber rifle and was aiming at a tree when he suddenly dropped the aim, put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. This is only one of many previous tradegies involved with this family.
There is a family rumor from our Hendrix line of Jasper being related to the famous outlaw Jesse James. There is a "James" connection to the Hendrix family but if he was indeed related to Jesse, I have yet to determine this. I have determined that Jasper was adopted by a man named Edwin Gray Hendrix. In 1856 in Lauderdale Co, AL, Edwin Hendrix married a woman named Jane James. By 1860 Edwin and Jane were in McNairy Co, TN where the census records show 7 year old Joseph Jasper Hendrix living in their household. It is obvious from the age of Jasper and the date of mariage of Edwin and Jane that Jasper was not a child from this marriage as he was born three years prior. It is not known if he is the son of Jane from a previous marriage or if he is her younger brother. Edwin and Jane were married at least 15 years but never had any children. It is not what happened to Jane but she probably died before 1877 because Edwin married a second time to Harriett Campbell. Edwin and Harriett moved to Fannin Co, TX and had 14 children. I have talked with descendants of Edwin and Harriett and evidence collected from these descendents confirm that Edwin adopted a boy, who according to some was possibly Indian or part Indian. Jasper never claimed Indian ancestory but since he was adopted it would have been impossible to prove. One family account said that Jasper was found by the Hendrix family after his family had been killed by Indians.
Jesse James did indeed have connections to both KY, where Jasper claims he was born, and Lauderdale Co, AL where Jane and Edward lived at the time of their marriage. In fact, the James Gang conducted their first holdup in Lauderdale Co, AL in 1881 when they robbed the U. S. Paymaster near Center Star, AL. The paymaster in a statement about the holdup claimed the James boys told him they were not strangers to the area. Indeed to this day there are descendents of Jesse James that live in Lauderdale Co today. My great grandmother Zora Hendrix Daniel, Jasper's daughter claimed that the James boys visited them in Center Star when she was a very young girl. Will Hendrix, son of Jasper, was said on more than one occasion to have visited Frank James when he lived in OK. Frank supposedly told Will of the connection to the James family. Other evidence comes from a conversation I had with the historian of the Jesse James Museam where he stated that relatives of Jesse were indeed adopted by a family named Hendricks or Hendrix. Liz Glass, gg granddaughter of Jasper claimed written proof of this relation but that evidence has since disappeared. Notes I discovered written by my aunt claim that Jasper's father and Jesse James's father were brothers. Since the ones who know the facts have long gone we now may never know the truth. Nevertheless, it is an interesting story.
General Notes: Wife -
Mary Jane "Belle" Askew was born about 1850 in Lauderdale Co, AL. Belle, like her father, was a school teacher in Center Star, AL before she married. After Jasper and Belle divorced in 1905 she lived next door to her son-in-law and daughter, Joe and Zora Daniel until about 1910. In 1920 she was living with her daughter, Birtie Jackson in Garvin Co, OK. She died about 1932 while living with Joe and Zora Daniel in Ninnekah, Grady Co, OK.
Belle was on the final roll of the Choctaw Indian Nation, claiming 1/8 Choctaw blood. Her roll number was
Grandma "Belle" Hendrix is buried in Ninnekah Cemetery, Ninnekah, Grady Co, OK. Her grave is not marked. However to locate it, go in the cemetery gate proceed to the first intersection an turn right. About 150 feet down the road is a tree on the right side of the road. Grandma Belle is buried on the left side of the road directly across from the tree.
Her Grandfather Aaron Askew was Choctaw Indian.

U. G. Westmoreland, Jr., aged 51, of Fort Worth, Texas, died Wednesday, May 19, in a Dallas, Texas hospital after having heart surgery on May 10. He was born in Nevada Co and had lived in Fort Worth for twenty-five years, where he was employed at General Dynamics.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 21, in Owens-Brumley Funeral Home at Fort Worth, Texas.
Burial was in Laurel Land Memorial Gardens in Fort Worth.
Pallbearers were Deacons of the South Hill Baptist Church where Mr. Westmoreland was a member. Honorary pallbearers were fellow workers at General Dynamics.

Dear Astle, I hope that the shock of receiving a letter from me won't cause you any serious illness. The spirit just now moved me to write you a few lines.
I am wondering if you are still living the simple life of bliss or have you entered the forty ninth state yet. Good luck to you when you do that step forward. It is a great life.
I am away out here in Western NE selling aluminum. This is some town. About ten thousand and lots of money but it is hard to get the money from some of these tightfisted heathens. Are you going to school this winter or are you living off the money you saved out of the salary you received while working? for Uncle Sam? After I got discharged I accompanied my wife to her folks for a couple weeks visit. Then we went to Joplin, MO for four or five days to visit my brother. Then to Sterling, KS. for a couple weeks and then we went back to Cromwell, IA again as my wife's brother just got home from France and we wanted to see him before we came away out here. We got out here about Sept. 9. We will probably stay here the greater part of the winter.
I hear from Cornelius every once in a while. He bought a small farm near Barron, WI I guess he expects to run a dairy.
I haven't heard from any body else of the old bunch since I left the Fort.

Excerpt from the book "Haven, KS, A Century of Blessings-1986", The Astle Family written and compiled by Velma Astle Hauser and John W. Astle. Marie Guhl was Homer's first wife. After Marie's death, he married Annalee Cantwell, whose two children were Robert or "Bob", and Thomas "Tom". Annalee Astle and Bob Cantwell, and wife Joli live in Haven. Two of the third generation with the Astle name were early day mail carriers out of Haven. Homer Astle began his mail carrying career in 1926 and retired in 1970 at Haven. There are over 40 Astle descendants living in the Haven community today, very few of which carry the Astle name.
According to Homer's daughters, he had enlisted in the military during World War I as a medic. At the time his group was shipped overseas, Homer was very ill with influenza, which was epidemic at the time, so he was left behind. He was never sent overseas, the war ending soon after he recuperated. News clipping, probably the Haven Journal, Thursday, December 29, 1966 RURAL MAIL CARRIER RETIRES AFTER 47 YEARS SERVICE.
Homer Astle, the mail-carrying-ist mail carrier in these parts retired today (Thursday) after 47 years of delivering the U.S. mail on Rural Route 1, Haven; less one year for military service in World War I. Astle started carrying the mail January 17, 1921 in a Model "T" Ford. Since that time he has traveled over 800,000 miles on the route, wearing out three Model "T's", four Model "A's", six Chevrolets, two Dodges, two Oldsmobiles, two Plymouths and one Jeep.
He has traveled his route, now 65 miles long, through snow, sleet, rain, dust storms, and everything KS has had to offer in the way of weather, yet always managed somehow to get through with the mail. He says that he has been stuck, at one time or another, on every mile of his route. In the past 47 years, Mr. Astle has served under eleven postmasters: Ed Henderson; A.L. Hartzler; Oliver Gilmore, acting; L.B. Blachly; Lawrence Forker; Mina Kincaid Dow, acting; Virginia Chain Hoskinson, acting; Hersal Collmann; Wayne Stoffer; Dan Forker, acting; and Raleigh May. He had 92 boxes on his 28-mile route when he started carrying the mail; now there are 100 boxes but the route is 65 miles long. Five families are still on the route that he served when he began.
Homer said he has always enjoyed good health, and to prove his point he turned back 3,500 hours of sick leave that he had accumulated in the 47 years, which must be some kind of record. However, the people with whom he has worked for a number of years say he drove his route many times when they felt he should be home in bed.
When he returned from his last trip on Art. 1, last Saturday, he was greeted by his wife, Annalee, the post office personnel, and Postmaster Raleigh May presented him a $100 Superior Performance Award check and Certificate of Award from the regional director of the U.S. Postal Service. Homer said, "I have always enjoyed my work and have always been treated tops. I have had excellent health and have a great deal to be thankful for. My only regret is that I won't get to work out of the new post office.

MET AT SCHOOL. Some 250 residents of Haven, Astle's friends and family, met at the Haven High School gym Sunday to surprise him with a basket dinner in his honor. "It was quite a wind-ding," Astle said. Many people on the route, he said, had lived there all through his service. He started to name several, then decided saying, he wouldn't feel right if he forgot to mention one of his long-time friends. "I have met a lot of wonderful people," he said, "and I don't see why they would consider this such an honor when half the farmers on the route have worked as long and harder than I have." Five of Astle's six children were at the festivities. "One daughter came all the way from Yakima, Wash. to surprise us," he said. "I've enjoyed my work," he said. "It hasn't seemed long when you're doing something you like." DREADED TO QUIT. "I'll tell you I did kind of dread to quit," he said, "but so far time hasn't hung too heavily on my hands." He said he and his wife had a few plans for the future. He wants to do some fishing, work in his yard and garden.

Grandpa Homer and Grandma Annalee Astle took Linda and Libby Hileman, about 12 years old, to KY and IN to visit Lincoln's birthplace, his home in IL, his grave, and to visit Annalee's relations. Linda apparently took photos on this trip. Susan found a roll of undeveloped film in Mom and Frank's basement in 1992 and had it developed. She took pictures of the Gilmore Cemetery plot and their old church which is about 250 years old, Mom and Pop's house, and information about Lincoln landmarks, including the gravestone of the mother of President Lincoln, Nancy Hanks Lincoln.
