Received from Iris (Robben) Camerud of Pocatello, Idaho in April 1995. It was probably written by her Aunt Loretta (Farnsworth) Jasmer. Iris was a granddaughter of Dale Owen Farnsworth. Iris and Loretta were less than four years apart in age to they were more like sisters than aunt and niece.

Dale Owen Farnsworth Married Daisy Tippey in Waverly, Iowa on January 16, 1896. They lived one mile west of Denver in an area called the "Big Woods" and still called that to this day. He was very musical and played in a band for dances, this meant he was gone a great part of the nite. Daisy would go with but as their family grew that was over. The farm was only 20 acres so a problem making a living. Before he was married he finished the local schools and went to Waterloo Business College for a year, he took violin lessons and could play well, also wrote his own music and did transposing. His mother Elizabeth gave music lessons and I suppose that is why Zelda could play too, Thornton played the trumpet and played in a band with boys from Germania Township. This is where the farm was located west of Bertha [Minnesota] so when Germania is referred to you know what it means. Owen, as he went by his second name, was set on marrying Daisy but his parents didn't approve as the Tippey's weren't considered high enough although all the Tippeys were Masons. He went to S. D. where his sister [Annie] and husband had located but thought the land was too expensive so after contacts with a realtor in Minn. he and Daisy's brother Lafe (Lafayette) went to Minnesota twice to look at land, bought a lovely farm 5 miles east of Bertha, Mar. 5, 1912. In those days moving was done by train when there was a distance, they had a box car loaded with stock, machinery and even brought the dog. Owen and Lafe rode in the car to feed and water the animals. Thornton attended schools in Denver and two years of High S. and was 16 when the family moved to Bertha. Zelda was 13 and Kathryn 9. Zelda tells me when they lived by the Big Woods she and Thornton picked wild raspberries, enough for Daisy to can, Thornton would gather maple syrup every spring and the mother would boil it down and have candy. Thornton was never able to continue his education in Minn and Zelda thinks it was wrong of her Dad to take that away from him as the grandparents kept Thornton and Zelda at their home in Denver. Grandma E. boarded and roomed teachers, that was something the better families did in those days. Zelda would set the table, help with the household chores but Grandma E. was very strict. When Owen was settled on his last farm 3½ miles east of Bertha, Minn., he went into raising Red Polled cattle, it was before his time tho and the project just didn't pay off and of course the depression was at that time. Daisy and the three children and Grandma Elizabeth rode the passenger train to Bertha, they packed their lunch and bought some food on the train. It took one week for the box car to get to Bertha. When the family arrived they rode by sled out to the farm as snow was on the ground yet in March. Owen died of heart trouble April 26, 1937. Daisy had a sale and sold everything, she worked for an elderly lady in Hewitt. Thornton was out of work so she and Thornton went back to the farm and stocked it. He went to Washington [State] and worked in the shipyards when Daisy married Conrad Ebert May 29, 1941. They sold out later and moved to St. Paul and Conrad worked in the R. R. shops. He retired from the R. R. and moved to Staples, Minn., where they lived their last years. Bertha, Minnesota - April 1937 Rites for D. O Farnsworth Held Today Passed Away Monday Evening, A Victim of Heart Disease The last rites are being held today for D. O. Farnsworth, a resident of the Bertha community since 1912, who passed away at his farm home east of the village at 9:40 o'clock Monday evening, April 26th. Five weeks ago Mr. Farnsworth was stricken with heart trouble and since that time has been in failing health. Dale O. Farnsworth was born September 6, 1875 at Denver, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Farnsworth. His childhood and early manhood was spent at Denver and on January 16, 1896 he was united in marriage to Daisy Tippey of Denver, Ia. Mr. and Mrs. Farnsworth resided in Iowa until 1912, when they moved to Minnesota and the Bertha community, first taking up their residence 5 miles east of the village now owned by Charles McIntire. Several years later Mr. Farnsworth purchased his own farm which he has since successfully operated. The Farnsworths were parents of four children. Thornton, Mrs. Anton Robben, Mrs. Louis Soeffner and Loretta. These and the bereaved wife are left to mourn the death of a kind and loving father and husband, besides many other distant relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home and at 2:30 o'clock from the Moran Methodist church with Rev. A. W. Rosness, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Moran Methodist cemetery. The pallbearers are: Simon Peka, E. C. Crippen, Phillip Hartman, Charles McIntire, L. J. Beilke and John Ruble

Louis Soeffner Funeral services for Louis Soeffner, 98, of the Central Todd County Care Center of Clarissa, formerly of Bertha, were held on Friday, December 26, 2003 at the Domian-Anderson Funeral Home in Bertha with Reverend Orville Sauter officiating. Louis passed away on December 23, 2003 in Clarissa. Louis was born on September 7, 1905 in Moran Township, Todd County, to Jacob Herman and Ida Marie (Gaumitz) Soeffner. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Farnsworth on November 15, 1935. Louis worked as a Todd County Road Maintenance worker and was a lifetime resident of the Todd County area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Farnsworth Soeffner on May 20, 2003; his parents, Jacob Herman and Ida Marie Soeffner; brothers, Elmer, John, Paul and Alvin; and sisters, Vera Heise and Lida Soeffner. Louis is survived by his brother, Bill Soeffner of Savannah, Georgia; sister, Edith (Alton) Johnson-Berg of New Brighton; and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Don Roline, David Walter, Nancy Walter, Gary Johnson and Charles Gaumitz. Interment was held at the Moran Methodist Cemetery in Moran Township

Obituary: Meadville [PA] Times 4 Nov 2008; "PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Rodney V. MORRIS, 91, a resident of Painesville, Ohio, for 53 years and formerly of Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at his son's home in Wickliffe, Ohio. He was born Aug. 16, 1917, in Conneautville. He worked for J.L. Morris and Son's International McCormick Farm Machinery; International-Harvester Co. Farm Machinery Division. He was employee number three for R. W. Sidley in Thompson, Ohio, where he worked for 65 years, of which he sold Mack and Volvo Trucks for 50 years. He enjoyed fishing, boating and camping. He was past commodore of Grand River Yacht Club in Grand River, Ohio, and a member of the Ashtabula Yacht Club. He graduated from the former Conneautville Vocational School in 1935 and from Mercer College with an accounting degree. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he enjoyed the special moments he shared with his family. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Farr Morris, whom he married Dec. 20, 1950; four daughters, Myrtle (Arthur) Randa of Fairport Harbor, Ohio, Tina Townsend of Bedford, Ohio, Kareen Angeloff of Cortland, Ohio, and Sandra (Victor) Beshara of Fairport Harbor; two sons, George Morris of Wickliffe and David (Mary Jo) Morris of Swanton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Matthew Randa, Marie Shinkle, Donna Craver, Rodney Craver, Jim Babcock, Jessica Jewett, Stephanie Morris, TJ Braessler, Chris Morris, Josh Morris and Scott Townsend; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Mahon Morris; two sons, George Russell and Lloyd Morris; two sisters, Hilda Brennies and Gertrude Morris; and two brothers, J. Russell Morris and William Morris. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 508 Mentor Ave., Painesville. Pastor Gerald Matzke of the church will officiate. Celebration of Life services for Myrtle L. Miller, 83, of Painesville, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at Lakeshore Assembly of God, 8880 Lakeshore Blvd., Mentor.
Mrs. Miller went home to be with the Lord, Sept. 9, 2008, at LakeEast Hospital.
Myrtle was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Ashtabula, where she grew up and graduated in 1944. She resided in the Painesville-Fairport Harbor area for more than 40 years.
Myrtle enjoyed being a career USAF wife, working at J.J. Newberry's and the Rayon, being a domestic for the Norweb family, a governess to Allyson and Meredith Brown and selling antiques and jewelry in the antique/flea market circuits. Most of all, Myrtle enjoyed caring for her grandchildren as her own and just being "Grandma" to all.

Finally, Myrtle never met a stranger and she loved to share the stories, riddles and songs of her life. No one else close to her will ever forget these things, as well as her love, generosity, patience and humor.
Myrtle is survived by her sister, Dorothy (Rodney) Morris; closest friend and associated family member, Illona Libbey; grandchildren, Bernadette (Karl) Gumsey, Clint (Cathy) Rose, and Lorena (Chris) Rivers; great-grandchildren, Amanda and Paul Welz, Jami Rose, and Drake Rivers; great-great-grandchildren, Maraya and Hallie Whitehair; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, John Miller Jr.; parents, Nelson and Jessie Farr; brother, Johnny Farr; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Smyle Daniels.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to help provide for services and condolences sent in the name of Lorena Rivers, to 68 Pearl St., Apt. 3, Painesville, OH 44077.

Leslie Beldon White was born in Flint Springs, Kentucky on July 13,1898 (July 9, 1899). He was the only son born to Oliver S. and Luella (Daugherty) White. On ______ he married Lethea Farris and they had one son Hershell. She was born on October 13, 1901. Hershell was killed when he was changing the tire on a piece of coal mining equipment and it rolled over on him. Lethea died on May 14, 1944 and is buried in the Union Grove Cemetery. On August 15, 1945, Leslie then married Alma Hines. She was born on June 1, 1913. She had a son Paul by a previous marriage.
Leslie and Alma had 3 sons John, who became a farmer, Leslie Clyde who lives in Beaver Dam, and James “Smiley” who served many terms as Ohio County Court Clerk.
Leslie died on March 27, 1968 and is buried at Sunnyside Cemetery.
Alma died on February 11, 2005 and is also buried at Sunnyside Cemetery in Beaver Dam.

The first Company Muster Roll that gives the enlistment date
was for four months pay and reported he had enlisted in
Pittsylvania Co, VA the 28 of Aug 1861 for 1 yr. by
Capt. Penick.

He had enisted into the 53rd. Regiment Virginia Infantry. This
company was formerly Captain Penick's Company, Montague's
Battalion, Virginia Infantry.

The 53rd Regiment Virginia Infantry was organized December 1,
1861, by the consolidation of Montague's and Tomlin's
Battalions and Waddill's Company Virginia Infantry. It was
reorganized in My 1862, and men of the 5th Battalion Virginia
Infantry, who were of conscript age, were transferred to it by
S.O. No. 200, A. & I. G.O., dated September 6. 1862.

General Pickett was in front about 300 yards ahead of the
artillery position, and to the left of it, and some 200 yards
behind the command which was then at the stone wall over which
some of the men were going, that is, the 53rd Regiment, part of
Armistead's Brigade, led by Colonel Rawley Martin, who fell
next to the gallant General Armistead, reached the enemy's guns
and captured them.

William was released from Point Lookout by Government Order No.
109, A. G. O. On his discharge papers he was described as
being light complected with sandy colored hair, blue eyes and
standing 5 feet, 9 3/4 inches tall.

Point Lookout POW Camp (Camp Hoffman) was established after the
Battle of Gettysburg to incarcerate Confederate prisoners. It
was in operation from August 1863 through June 1865. Being only
5' above sea level, it was located on approx. 30 acres of
leveled land at the southern tip of Maryland, in St. Mary's
County, and surrounded by water on three sides by the
Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. It was the largest prison
camp in the north.

Before the war, Point Lookout was a fashionable resort hotel
and a summer bathing place with over a hundred cottages where
the elite spent their leisure time. In 1862, with erection of
additional buildings, it became a military hospital for the
care of union soldiers, as well as a supply depot for the Army
of the Potomac. In August 1863, the large building with
outbuildings arranged in spoke fashion (Hammond Hospital),
became the care center for wounded/sick Confederate prisoners
as well as for union men.

During the two year span of operation, Point Lookout saw
approx. 50,000 POWs pass through her gates. These were military
and civilian, men and women, black and white. It's also
interesting to note that the youngest POW at Point Lookout was
Baby Perkins. He was born there. His mother was captured at the
Battle of Spotyslvania with her artillery unit.

Prison conditions were deplorable. Rations were below minimal
causing scurvy and malnutrition. Prisoners ate rats and raw
fish. It's recorded that one hungry Rebel devoured a raw
seagull that had been washed ashore. Soap skim and trash
peelings were often eaten when found. Lice, disease, and
chronic diarrhea often resulted in an infectious death.
Prisoners were deprived of adequate clothing, often no shoes in
winter or a blanket among sixteen or more housed in old, worn,
torn sibley tents. Even the Point's weather played havoc with
the prisoners. Because of it's location, it's extremely cold
with icy wind in the winter and a smoldering sun reflecting off
the barren sand in summer was blinding. High water often
flooded the tents in the camp area. The undrained marshes bred
mosquitoes. Malaria, typhoid fever and smallpox was common. The
brackish water supply was contaminated by unsanitary camp
conditions. There was a deadline approx. 10' from the approx.
14' wooden parapet wall. Anyone caught crossing this line, even
to peek through the fence, was shot. Prisoners were also
randomly shot at during the night as they slept.

Major Brady was the Provost Marshall and Major General Benjamin
(Beast) Butler would review the prison camp. Many times he
galloped through the crowd of men, hitting them as he sped by.
The sixty gun Minnesota was within a short distance from the
shore to guard the prisoners.

Among the sites at this prison were: 1830 Lighthouse, Hammond
Hospital, the Nuns housing, Fort Lincoln, guard quarters,
officers quarters, stables, contraband quarters, union
quarters/tenting area, burying grounds, smallpox hospital,
stockade, etc.

William G. Farthing was released 12 June 1865 and returned
home.

At present, a near 4,000 are accounted for as having died and
are buried in the Point Lookout cemetery. Their graves have
been moved twice since the original burial. They now rest in a
mass grave under an 85' towering obelisk monument erected by
the federal government. Huge bronze tablets circling this
monument depict names of those so far recorded. Also in this
well kept cemetery is a smaller 25' monument erected by the
state of Maryland to the memory of the prisoners.

Some family members state a middle name of Griffin, but I have
found nothing to support this.

In an unpublished manuscript written by his son, Whitt, it was
said William G. contracted pneumonia while a prisoner during
the War between the States and never completely got over it and
it was thought that contributed to his death at such an early
age.
General Notes: Wife -

Nannie received a pension for the service of her husband in the
Civil War. After he died she removed to North Carolina and was
denied a pension from there due to the service was in Virginia.
The family moved back to Virginia and she applied after living
there 2 and one half years in 1914, but was denied. The
residence requirement was 5 years and in 1916 she was awarded
the pension amount of $33.00 monthly. [Photocopies of her
