Obituary George W. Epperly, 69, of 806 South Concord, Davenport, Scott Co, IA di ed at St. Lukes Hospital Thursday evening, December 10th following a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday, December 14, in the Hill and Fredericks Chapel with burial in Fairmount Cemetery. Mr. Epperly was born May 26, 1901, the son of Hamilton H. and Ethel Mae Spurlin Epperly and resided north of Joy. He married Hattie Ashcraft of Davenport in 1939 and was employed at International Harvester until his illness. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. Surviving are the widow, a son, Lawrence of Milan; a daughter, Mrs. P.M. Bush, Lyons , KS; a step-daughter, Mrs. Julius (Lolita) Shick, Anaheim, CA; 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Ethel Mae Epperly, Aledo; sisters, Mrs. Evert (Ethel) Hayes, Joy and Mrs. Lee (Inez) McNeal, Aledo

Marjorie Ashdown

Marjorie Ashdown, 86, of Huntley, Ill., formerly of Geneseo, died Friday, June 17, 2005, in Elgin, Ill.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Fairfield Methodist Church, Port Byron. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery, Port Byron. Memorials may be made to the Fairfield Methodist Church, American Heart Association or the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Mrs. Ashdown was born July 23, 1918, in Hillsdale, the daughter of Clarence and Nellie Kane McGregor. She graduated from Hillsdale High School and was a switchboard operator at Hillsdale Telephone Co. from 1934 until 1939. She married W. Banker Ashdown on Feb. 14, 1939, in Hillsdale.
She was a member of Fairfield Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church, Geneseo. She was a former Girl Scout leader, a member of Spring Creek Grange and a volunteer and 4-plus gallon donor for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Wanda E. and Dan Morales, Gilbert, Ariz., Linda J. Thomas, Huntley; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; and a daughter, Beverly J. Rutherford

From collected data of Duane Olson: "Although there is substantial evidence that Joseph Cooper and Mary Harding Cooper were the parents of Thomas Cooper, the Cooper cousins that compiled this genealogical record of the clan are not positive of the relationship. There were more Coopers in Staffordshire than there were Doyles in Boston. Out of the swarm we have this Thomas. His birth date has been taken from a mid-nineteenth century photograph with his birth date written on the back in the hand of the period. Swynnerton has been accepted as his birthplace although the Swynnerton Parish Record says "Born 4th instant". "

Mercer Co, ILL History, p. 338: (Thomas Cooper) was born in Staffordshire (England), September 3, 1774, and died at Hamlet; October 10, 1857. (Ann (Hashley) Cooper) was born October 1, 1787 (in England), and died October 20, 1838. They were married in their native country and emigrated to America in 1832, and located in Canada, where they remained five years, when they moved to Lewis Co, New York. In 1840 they emigrated to Michigan, and came to Illinois in 1846 and located in Perryton Township, Mercer Co, where they spent their declining years. Thomas Cooper was a tailor by trade. He and wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church, both in England and America.

General Notes: Husband -

In this first email I would like to share what I know about Frederick James Ashley. He was the son of James and Mary Ashley. He was born November 24, 1874 and married Nellie McHerron when he was 19 and she was 18 on January 24, 1890. On July 2, 1893, their son, George F. Ashley was born. Then on September 7, 1906 (?) James H. Ashley was born.

During this time, Frederick ran a hardware store in Decatur, Nebraska. I think it was owned by his father, James but it may have been a joint ownership with someone else. Frederick had a serious alcohol problem and apparently became aggressive when he drank. On May 24, 1909 Nellie filed for divorce. I have obtained all the divorce document from the county and abuse allegations were made. When the divorce was granted, George was already in the custody of the state and had been "committed to the State Industrial School". This was a school for juvenile offenders. Custody of James, who was 3 years old, was given to Jennie Maryott who was the paternal aunt. Jennie declined custody and it was granted to Mary Ashley, Frederick's mother. Nellie moved to Chicago and later abducted James from the care of Mary Ashley. Nellie later married a man named Kirchner who worked for the New York Telephone Company. In 1965 she was living in Santa Monica, California and had a son and 2 grandkids living nearby. This is according to a newspaper article printed in the Omaha World Herald on May 25, 1965. Nellie died August 7, 1965 in Los Angeles, California.

On November 10, 1909, Frederick enlisted in the Navy and he was discharged on November 9, 1913 in Philadelphia. I have his military records. Now this is one of the many things that are very confusing to me. My grandmother, Evalyn Loeb, was from Philadelphia however she was 15 years old when Frederick was discharged. In addition, at some point he married Emma E. (last name unknown) and that marriage ended in divorce on January 19, 1918. This divorce was granted in Sioux City, Iowa and I have a copy of the divorce decree.

My grandmother, Evalyn was born January 30, 1898 in Philadelphia. I don't know when or where my grandparents were married. Her family said that she eloped. My father, Fred James Ashley was born January 4, 1922 in Sioux City, Iowa. On May 4, 1938 my grandparents were divorced in Sioux City.

According to the Sioux City Journal newspaper article he had worked for "Albertson & Company" (whatever that was) for 15 years and he has a pet parrot. I don't know why that strikes me as odd but it does. Mary Ashley margoperrego@knology.net 7/9/2006
