Grace Davis Vanhoy

WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Grace Davis Vanhoy, 88, of Darrow Road died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at her home. She was born March 11, 1916, a daughter of the late John Henry and Carrie Shores Davis. Mrs. Vanhoy was a member of Love's United Methodist Church and the Will Hanes Sunday School Class. She was also the owner and operator of John's Take Home of Walkertown for 11 years. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles K. Vanhoy. Surviving are her husband of the home, Charles Plummer Vanhoy; a daughter, Loretta V. Angel, of Winston-Salem; a son, Virgil Davis, and wife, Tamara, of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Marta A. Lyon and husband, Brad, Jeff P. Angel and April Davis, all of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Sydney Angel; four sisters, Eula Smith of Winston-Salem, Lucille Blum of Rustburg, Va., Lorraine Sturgill of Sparta, N.C., and Betty Hampton of Walkertown; a brother, Earl Davis, of Sparta, N.C.; and a very special family friend, David Reeves, of Clemmons. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at Love's United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Chip Webb. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Love's United Methodist Church, 302 Main St., Walkertown, NC 27051. Herschell was my uncle. He has several brothers and sisters. My father is Robert Dale Davis. He has a twin sister named Roberta (Bert) Davis. Robert Dale Davis, married Patricia Pauline Dykes and they had two children; Robert Duane Davis (b. 2/2/1967) and Faith Ann Davis (b. 3/5/1969). Robert's twin sister Roberta married Ronnie Beineke and they have three children; Joseph, Starletta and Shiela. Robert and Roberta were born 5/3/1945. Their younger sister Patricia Davis married Jack Knapp and they have four children; Jack junior, Kevin, John and Karla. Herschell Leroy Davis' parents were Lewis William Davis and Rilla Jean Parr. Somewhere, I have additional information. I will have to get it for you. My aunt Jackie married Ramond Williams and they had three children. Grandma Clara Irene gave birth to two sets of twins. One set survived and the other set of twin died shortly after their birth. My father still lives in Indiana, not to far from Aunt Betty. I, however, live in California and my brother lives in Texas. As a child, I remember going to Uncle Herschell and Aunt Bettys house. Uncle Herschell was so tall that he had to stoop to get through a doorway. I was very saddened when he passed away. My brother still has a scar on his cheek from when Greg's foot hit him in the cheek (accidentally) and opened the skin. Donna Love Emailed about Julia. They moved to Rhodes, IA in 1923 becau se Donna's great grandfather (Joseph Davis) made a trip back to McCordsville, in trying to trace his relatives. No one knows anything beyond his father Stewart Baker Davis who would have been Julia's brother. in 1923 Julia was living in Lone Tree, IA Eventually, James & Julia sold out and moved to Rhodes to be close to what little family she had. They know there were at least four siblings of Julia's. Stewart, born 1821, Mary born 1838, Julia born 1842, and a brother who was killed in a fire when he was 4. Name believed to be Abraham born in 1846, although this is not confirmed. He could be Stewart's full brother and born in 1826. Stewart and his 3rd wife Ellenor Day Davis also lived in Rhodes, IA and moved there from in IN 1866. Because of the difference in their ages she suspects that their father had at least 2 wives but that isn't proven either or which of the 5 Davis men in Spice Valley Twp, Lawrence Co, in IN 1820 were the father of these children. Stewart is listed in 1850 Lawrence Co, in Census. They also know the children were orphaned young. It is not clear whether it was the first or second family that was orphaned or both. Julia told Donna's grandmother that she was married the first time very young because the family that kept her and her sister were mean to her. Mr. Clauson who was Julia's second husband was the uncle of her sister Grace's husband. She also told Donna's grandmother that she was a mail order bride and that was how she married James Taylor. Word comes that Kenneth S. Davis, son of Abe C. Davis, who formerly lived out in the Salt Creek neighborhood, is now a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy and is an instructor in the anti-submarine warfare at the Naval Training Station at Norfolk, Virginia. He had several weeks special schooling at Boston, also at San Diego, California, previous to his present work. Kenneth lived in this county up until he was of high school age, in fact he attended one year of high school at Ada. He has a wife and small daughter who are with him now at Norfolk.

Life stories: Susan Shaw posted November 27, 2002 Susan F. Shaw of Columbia died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center. She was 89. Mrs. Shaw was born Dec. 6, 1912, in Ray County to Pomeroy and Dorcey Alice Miller VanTrump. She graduated from Liberty High School and attended William Jewell College before coming to MU. On May 20, 1934, she married Kenneth Davis in Liberty. After his death, she married Russell Shaw in Columbia on Dec. 19, 1947. He also died earlier. An avid bowler, Mrs. Shaw was a member of the Columbia Womens Bowling Association and the Columbia Bowling Hall of Fame. Mrs. Shaw worked at the Missouri Historical Society and Christian College, now Columbia College. She was an early board member of Pinnacles Youth Foundation and was also a 4-H leader. Mrs. Shaw is survived by a son, James R. Shaw of Columbia; a daughter, Suellen Davis Wells of Lake Ozark; a brother, William VanTrump of Kerrville, Texas; and four grandchildren. A son and two brothers died earlier. Visitation for Mrs. Shaw will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, 101 N. Tenth St. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to First Christian Church, 101 N. Tenth St., or the Pinnacles Youth Foundation, Boone County Extension Office, Route UU, Columbia, Mo. 65201.
