Obituary -- L. A. Wood
Linus Austin Wood was born in Edgington, Rock Island county, Illinois, May 29, 1845, and died at the Swedish hospital, Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 18, 1916, at the age of seventy years, seven months and nineteen days.
On the 1st day of January 1871 he was married to Melvira Anderson and in 1873 came with his wife and infant son to Kansas and settled on the homestead in Fountain township where he lived until the time of his death. This union was blessed with six children, five of whom are living and were present at the funeral. Those living are Lois Pauline, Philander F., Asa C., Harvey L., and Walter I. The oldest child, Linus, died at the age of eleven years.
On August 18, 1904, his companion departed this life and since then his only daughter has cared for him.
Besides the members of his immediate family he leaves his aged mother, Mary P. Crabs of Centralia, Washington, three grandchildren, seven half brothers and sisters and a wide circle of warm and sincere friends to mourn the loss of one who was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, a steadfast friend and a loyal, upright, industrious and valuable citizen.
At an early day Mr. Wood was converted in the Baptist faith and joined what was later known as the Ada Antioch Baptist church and has been a member ever since.
He was one of those courageous pioneers whose industry and perseverance transformed the wilderness of the great west into that magnificent empire of agricultural supremacy of which Kansas is the center.
Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, Jan. 22nd, conducted by Rev. McKee of the Ada Baptist church. Interment was made in the Ada cemetery

Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 A.M. at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Burial will be in Or Twp Cemetery, Ainsworth, with military rites. Donald Sands was born Feb. 17, 1923, near Crawfordsville, to Frank H. and Vera (Wood) Sands. He married Mildred Anderson on Nov. 11, 1943, in Albany, GA. He was a farmer in the area and a World War II Air Force veteran, serving in the 62nd Troop carrier command. He was awarded the Air Force medal four times and earned five Battle Stars. He served in the European Theater, participating in the Invasion of Italy. He was a 50-year member of the Crawfordsville American Legion and a 26-year veteran of the Air Force Reserve unit. He also was a member of the Columbus City Masonic Lodge #107 and Cotter Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder. Miriam "Piggy" Westmoreland Anderson Putnam, 78, wife of Samuel R. Putnam Jr. for 57 years, and resident of Rolling Green Village in Greenville, died Oct. 7, 2003, at Saint Francis Hospital.

She was born in Woodruff, the daughter of William Woodruff and Rebecca Westmoreland Anderson. She attended Limestone College and graduated from Furman University in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. At Furman, she was elected president of Chi Beta Phi, an honorary science fraternity, and was selected as outstanding member to receive the Distinguished Award Key. She continued her graduate studies in education at Furman University.

Mrs. Putnam was employed in the agricultural and textile laboratories at Clemson University, Table Rock Laboratories, Greenville County Schools, Clemson University Extension Services and J.B. White Department Store. She was appointed by Governor James Edwards to serve on the Board of Directors of Grady Hipp Nursing Center and was a member and president of The American Association of University Women.

She was a lifelong Southern Baptist, was an active member of Roper Mountain Baptist Church, and was a former member of Northgate Baptist Church, serving as Sunday School director and teacher, as Training Union leader, as director and member of the Women's Missionary Union, and was a member of the Church Council.

Besides her husband, she is survived by four children and their spouses, Lynn P. and Billy Jack Gregg, of Hurricane, W.Va., Ann P. and Gordon Allen, of Ringgold, Ga., Judy P. and Clark Foster, of Stockbridge, Ga., and Bill and Laura Putnam, of Easley; fourteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Mary Elizabeth Woolbright, of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Northgate Baptist Church in Greenville, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Whaley, the Rev. Ron Lewis and the Rev. Clyde Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Roper Mountain Baptist Church, 300 Roper Mountain Road, Greenville, SC 29615; or to Northgate Baptist Church, 633 Summit Drive, Greenville, SC 29609, in memory of Miriam Putnam.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and staffs of Saint Francis Hospital and the Cancer Center of the Carolinas for the excellent care their wife and mother received during her extended illness.

DEATH: JOHNNIE KAY CHOURNOS My beloved husband and our children's beloved father, Johnnie Kay Chourno s, 52, passed away Sunday, April 12, 1992. He was born Dec. 17, 1939, in Tremonton, to Nicholas Christ and Dorothy Kay Chournos. He was one of six children and attended McKinley Elementary School and graduated from Bear River High School in 1959. He married Sandra Maria Payne in Tremonton, April 10, 1964; later divorced. He married Sherrie Ann Anderson, Tremonton, January 28, 1972; marriage later solemnized March 25, 1974, in the Logan LDS Temple. He owned and operated a semi-truck and trailer and later became a driver for Miller's Transport, Hyrum. He attended Ogden Area Vocational Center and Davis Area Vocational Center to become a machinist for Morton Thiokol. He had worked at Fabra-Weld, Clearfield, and at the time of his death he was employed by La-Z-Boy, Tremonton. He was a High Priest in the Riverview LDS Ward, where he enjoyed his home teaching and scouting assignments. He was so proud to be a part of the Primary organization and the Valiant A Class, which he taught along with his wife. Surviving are: His wife, Tremonton; two sons, Dugan J., Tremonton; Shane and his wife, Lori, East Garland; one daughter, Tina and husband, Chad Herbert, Brigham City; four lovely grandchildren, Candice Marie, Beau Riley and Kelli Christina Herert, and Jessica Leah Oyler; parents, Tremonton; two brothers and two sisters, Sam N. Chournos, Mrs. Junior (Cheri) Lish, Mrs. Carl (Helen) Harper, all of Tremonton; Dr. George Russell Chournos, Cokeville, Wyo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Monty Nick Chournos, and Mont's wife, Janice Andreasen Chournos. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 16, 1992, 12 noon, at the Riverview-Deweyville Ward Chapel, 10750 No. State Rd. 69, with Bishop Cleo R. Bunderson officiating. Born September 11, 1903, in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, a daughter of George Martin and Martha Henrietta Wall Haws. Married Warren William Anderson on October 11, 1928 in the Manti LDS Temple. He preceded her in death on February 5, 1978.Member LDS Church, serving in various church positions. Enjoyed playing and teaching piano for many years. Loved reading.
Survived by daughter, Wanda (Arven) Crowther; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Urban (LaVee) Haws of Alpine; sister, Ella Mae (Van) Smith of Ogden.

Martha F. Andes Mrs. Martha Florence Westmoreland Andes, 88, passed away peacefully July 28, 2004, at Wesley Long Community Hospital. She was born Sept. 30, 1915, the fourth of five children of Jasper Eugene and Cora Boles Westmoreland. She grew up in Rural Hall and graduated from Rural Hall High School. As a young lady she moved to the Washington, D.C., area where she met and married Francis Burkley (Buck) Andes. She worked many years for the Federal government in the State Department. Upon their retirement in the early 1970?s, she and Buck moved to Timberville, Va., where they enjoyed many happy years together in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley growing flowers and vegetables and enjoying the company of their cats. Upon Buck?s death in 2000, she moved to Greensboro to be near her family. She was an active sportswoman both as a high school basketball player and later winning many awards as a bowler. She also was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, serving in many leadership roles including Worthy Matron of her chapter (Mary Washington Chapter No. 50) in Northern Virginia. Survivors include a brother, Charles Wade Westmoreland Sr. of Winston-Salem; nieces, Carole F. Lang of Madison, Ala., Elizabeth C. Branin of Wake Forest, Diane W. Haynes of Johnson City, Tenn., and Elaine W. White of Winston-Salem; nephews, C. Randolph Ferguson of Greensboro, R.C. Carter Jr. of Boonville and Charles W. Westmoreland Jr. of Mount Airy; eight great nieces and nephews and three great great nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Blanche W. Pegram, Ruby W. Ferguson and Margaret Carter Coram. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, at Forsyth Memorial Park by Rev. Jim Newsome, pastor of Rural Hall Moravian Church, where she was a longtime member. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rural Hall Moravian Church, 7939 Broad St., Rural Hall, N.C. 27045
