DURHAM - David Baxter Coltrane died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Carver Living Center in Durham, N.C. Mr. Coltrane was born in High Point to the late Carl H. Coltrane and Cora Blanche Stack Coltrane. Mr. Coltrane lived in Durham for over 60 years. He worked for Sears Roebuck and Company for over 40 years where he was Hardware Manager for 30 years. He was a member of Fellowship Masonic Lodge 687 and a Shriner. He was a member of Mt. Sylvan Methodist Church and the Sylvan Seniors Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Barbee Williams; and two brothers, Leroy Coltrane (High Point) and Harold Coltrane (High Point).
He is survived by his wife, Doris Colclough Coltrane of the home; daughters, Madora C. Davis (Donald) of Durham, Mildred C. Kowa (Mike) of Glenmore, Pa., and Carla B. Coltrane of Durham. Grandchildren include David W. Davis, Dana D. Branham (Jon), Jennifer C. Kowa, and Robin L. Kowa and a great grandson, Luke D.L. Branham. He is also survived by brothers, J.D. Coltrane (Ann) of High Point and Clarence Coltrane of Yuma, Ariz. Mrs. Leroy Coltrane, Mrs. Harold Coltrane, and Mrs. Mildred Bowles, as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.
He is also survived by: Wanda Smith (Stan), Ann Colclough, Martha Black, Nancy Tucker (Charles) and Bobby Colclough.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2004, at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park with Masonic Rites.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at 1706 Stacy Dr., Durham and 8116 Wilkerson Rd., Cedar Grove (Hillsborough).

Faith Maxine Combs, 93
Faith Maxine Combs, 93, of Hartford City, died at 12:07 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2007, at Ball Memorial Hospital.
Born to Harry E. and Tottie (Stout) Mendenhall on March 11, 1914, Mrs. Combs married William "Bill" Layton Combs on August 27, 1938; he preceded her in death on March 14, 1975.
Mrs. Combs worked with her husband at Bill's T.V. in Hartford City and she also worked at Rex Photo Studio in Hartford City as a receptionist. She also worked as secretary at Gilkey Realty Company in Hartford City and retired from the Purdue University Loan Department in 1970.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and a 50-year member of the Purity Chapter of the order of the Eastern Star where she was a Past Worthy Matron. She was a past president of Omega Nu Tau Sorority, a member of Blackford Historical Society, a charter member of the Captain William Wells D.A.R. Chapter in Bluffton (which was later closed and she transferred to Francois Godfroy Chapter of D.A.R. in Montpelier in 2003), a charter member of the Blackford County A.A.R.P, a member of the Blackford Community Hospital Auxiliary and the Naomi Circle of Grace United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include one daughter, Rebecca "Becky" A. (Jack E.) Cain of Montpelier; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her sister Hope Hurst and infant sisters Lenora, Opal and Frieda Mendenhall.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Keplinger Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Hall officiating. Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie.
The Purity Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will have a service for Mrs. Combs at 7 p.m. Thursday and the Omega Nu Tau Sorority will have a memorial at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, both of which will be at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the Church or Francois Godfroy Chapter of D.A.R. in Hartford City.

Clair B. Pickup June 26, 1915 Ð April 14, 2006 Clair B. Pickup passed away peacefully at his home in Provo, Utah on April 14, 2006 at the age of 90. Clair was born on June 26, 1915 in Vernal, Utah the fifth of six children, and first son, of Clarence Ray and Vilate Batty Pickup. Clair was raised on a farm as part of a close knit, loving family, and he remained close to his sisters and their families throughout his life. He attended the Glines Ward School in Vernal and graduated from Uintah High School in 1933. He received an accounting degree from Brigham Young University in 1937. Unable to find an accounting job during the Great Depression, he delivered fruit for Pacific States Fruit and Produce. Later he worked as an accountant for Wasatch Furnace Company and U.S. Steel. He also "kept the books" for several local businesses. Clair was a proud veteran of World War II. He served in the United States Army for over four years in Kentucky and England and in battle campaigns in North Africa and Italy as a Platoon Sergeant in the 752nd Armored Tank Battalion. On January 24, 1947, he married his sweetheart and eternal companion, Darlene Conley in the Lion House. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1948. They lived their entire married life in Provo, and had a wonderful marriage that lasted over 58 years. They were best friends and treasured their time together. Clair and Darlene are the parents of five sons. Clair was proud of his sons and their families and he loved to spend time with them. Clair and Darlene traveled the country to visit their children and grandchildren and rarely missed an important event in their lives. Their visits were greatly anticipated and appreciated. He loved to tell his children and grandchildren about his life experiences, especially about his early life growing up in Vernal and the War. His stories will be remembered and cherished by many. He will be deeply missed by all of his family. Clair was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Clair was a kind and generous man and was known for his honesty and integrity. He was a master handy man who could fix anything. He had a great appreciation for the outdoors and especially loved to spend time at Flaming Gorge and at Fairview Lakes. He also enjoyed spending a part of each winter in St. George. Clair and Darlene owned and rented the Pickup Place apartments to BYU students for nearly 40 years. Hundreds of young men spent their college years at the Pickup Place and have fond memories of Brother and Sister Pickup. Clair was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters and brothers-in-law, Don and Grace McConkie, Clinton and Helen Erekson, George and Georgia Ray Bills and Ray and Alberta Corless and his younger brother Merle (Mose) Pickup. He was proud of, and for many years has missed, his dear brother Mose, who died in World War II. Clair was preceded in death by his sons Mark and Dean Pickup. He is survived by his wife, Darlene, a daughter-in-law, Dixie Pickup (Mark's wife), Martinez, California, and his sons John (Cindy), Provo, Ray (Janet), South Jordan, and Douglas (Nancy), Allen, Texas. He has thirteen grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, who called him Grandpa Clair and Boppa. He is also survived by his special nieces and nephews and their families, who affectionately knew him as "Touts" and "Toutsy." Funeral services will be held at the Berg Mortuary at 185 East Center Street in Provo on Thursday, April 20 at 2:00 P.M. There will be a viewing from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday and for one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday. Interment will follow immediately after at the Provo City Cemetery.
