General Notes: Husband -
Frihoff Peter Nielson 1975 Age 79 At the request of my family I will relate some of the history and events that have occurred before and during my life. My father Frihoff Godfrey Nielson was born May 3, 1851 in Copenhangen, Denmark. He was the son of Peter Nielson and Maria Fredrica Posseman. When he was about 10 years old his parents emigrated to the United States and settled in the small town of Peterson, Utah. Peterson was near Ogden, Utah, and located on the Weber River.
My mother Emma Waitstill Mecham was born October 18, 1858 at Tooele, Utah. She was the daughter of Joseph Mecham and Elizabeth Bovee. The had come across the plains with the saints from Nauvoo. From Tooele her parents moved to Morgan, Utah.
In 1875 my father was called as a missionary to go to Arizona with Lot Smith. He was to be a clerk and to help establish the United Order. The brethren told him that he would have to have a wife. He had met my mother and so he went to her home in Morgan and asked Grandpa Mecham if he could marry Emma? Grandpa told him that she had gone fishing and that she would have to give him that answer. My father proposed to my mother as she was sitting on a rock fishing. Some months later theytraveled to St. George and were married in the temple.
As my parents traveled by wagon to join Lot Smith they crossed the Colorado River at Lees Ferry and then continued on to Sunset, Arizona. Sunset was located near the present town of Winslow.
In 1878 at Sunset my oldest brother Frihoff Brigham was born. A year later my parents lost their first born. The Sunset United Order was abandoned and my parents moved to Ramah, New Mexico. On March 22, 1896 at Ramah, I was born. My mother had 9 children. 3 boys and 6 girls . I was her youngest child. I am the only one of her children still living.
When I was 5 years old, my father moved his family to Bluewater, New Mexico to pioneer the town. During the first year we were there, he raised oat and hay and hauled it to Fort Wingate to sell to the Calvary that was stationed there. The fort had been built to protect us from the Indians. When I was 7 years old, my father was called on a mission to St. Louis. While he was gone, my mother, with the help of my sisters supported the family. I enjoyed traveling the 15 miles by wagon to the Mexican town to sell butter, eggs, cheese and milk that my mother and sisters processed. As we came to each home, mother would have me hop out of the wagon and make the deliveries. As I returned each time mother would count the money they had given me and if there was to much, she would send me back with the amount we had been over paid. This was my first lesson in honesty. Some times the people would take the returned money and sometimes they would laugh and say, "no le hace", which meant "that doesn't make any difference". They thought we were poor and so they were kind to us.
During this same period of time, we had to haul our water 3 miles in wooden barrels. Sometimes the temperature would drop to 30 degrees below zero and the water would freeze solid in the barrels. We would have to chip the ice out, melt it down in tubs in order to have water for our various needs.
I had a good friend named Albert Tietjen, during my boyhood days. One day we were playing and didn't realize how far we had drifted away from home. There was a big sinkhole about 3 or 4 miles away and we began to play around it. We had a big dog named Shep, that belonged to Orson Lee with us. In fact, that dog seemed to follow me everywhere I went. The dog was running around the sinkhole with us, when suddenly the bank caved in and Albert and I fell in . The dog finally ran home and began scratching on a door of my house. My mother came out to investigate and when she did not find me with the dog, she began to search for me. Grandma Tietjen joined her and they finally realized that the dog kept barking and heading east and so they followed him. The dog led them to the sinkhole. They got some help and were able to get us out.
My mother was always anxious to have her children have an education. My sister Pearl had gone to BYU and my brother Fred and other sisters had tone to St Johns Stake Academy to school . When I was 17, I also went to St. Johns.
On my return from school, I found that a group of LDS colonists had settled in Bluewater. They had been driven from their homes in old Mexico. Among the families that came was a family named Cluff. They had a daughter named Marie and it was at this time that I met my future wife. Marie and I were married on October 29, 1914 in Bluewater. The next spring we took the DRG train to Salt Lake City by way of Denver. On June 11, 1915, we were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple.
After we returned to Bluewater, we lived in a one-room apartment. Soon after, with the help of my brother-in-law we started building our first home. The home consisted of two rooms, with a fireplace at one end and was 12' X 24'. Our first son Willis Frihoff was born there .
In 1920 while Willis was still a baby, we moved to Mesa Arizona. I went into the grocery business with my sister Libby's husband, Roy Lesueur. We had been working together about 8 months and were doing real well when Roy contacted typhoid fever and passed away. After his death, Libby and I sold the store and I went back to work in the cotton fields for $1.50 a day . I was later made a row boss and my wages were raised $.15 a day. We had to buy everything we ate at the company commissary. Corned beef was $.30 a can. It didn't leave us very much to go on. Because of our poor diet, I got a lot of boils all over my body. I went to see Dr. Openshaw who was a naturopath or a food doctor. He told me that I should eat like Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden and that the boils would clear up. I told him that I would be glad to eat that way if he could tell me how to house, feed and clothe my family on $1.65 a day. He said he couldn't help me and so I went home.
I quit my job in the cotton fields and found another job in Phoenix working for Donofrio Ice Cream Company. I hadn't been there very long when I had an accident. I was running the refrigeration equipment and while oiling the ice crusher, a keg of ice fell and crushed my big toe - paper - thin. I had to be taken to the hospital. After my release, my brother-in-law Elijah Allen told me that he thought I had better take my family and go back to Bluewater to live. I told him that I would like to go but that I didn't have the money. He said he wou ld loan it to me.
Elijah had a Dodge car and he took us to Phoenix to catch the train to Bluewater. On the way , he stopped at the courthouse to take care of some business. He was a lawyer. He told me to drive the car over to the depot to buy our tickets and to unload the baggage and then come back for him. I started to back the car out of the parking place and didn't see a cluster of lights and backed into them, knocking them down. I was right in the front of the police station when the accident happened. The police came out and told me that unless I could put up a bond, I would have to go to jail. Just then, Elijah came out of the courthouse and told the police that the car belonged to him and that he would take care of the damages. We were one day late getting of to Bluewater and as we crossed the New Mexico state line, I breathed a deep breath and told Marie how good it was to be going home.
After we got back to Bluewater, I went up to Gallup and found a job working on the Santa Fe Railroad. I had worked there a year and was up for a promotion. The superintendent told me that I couldn't expect to get very far working for the railroad, because I wasn't a Mason or a Catholic. Well I knew that I wasn't going to become a Catholic and I didn't know very much about the Masons. One weekend the church was having conference and one could take Brother Ballard to Grants to catch his train. I raised my hand and said that I would be able to go . On the way to Grants, Brother Ballard turned to me and asked me what was bothering me . I hadn't said a word to him about my problem and so I knew that he was inspired to ask . I told him what the superintendent had said about the promotion. Brother Ballard told me that it was difficult to work for the railroad and to fill the church assignments and to spend the time that I needed with my family. I knew that this was true because of the different work schedules that I had to work. I knew that he had given me the answer that I needed to go so I returned to Gallup and quit my job.
Back in Bluewater, I found a job running a limekiln for a while. Then I got a job with Anderson Brothers Construction Company. Their headquarters were in El Paso TX. They made me a partnership deal, where we could bid certain jobs together and split the profits. This we did and in 1932, my share of the profits amounted to between $30,000 and $33,000. One Wednesday, Anderson Brothers wired me to meet them in Albuquerque the following week. They said they would have my check and a settlement sheet. On Thursday, I received another wire saying that the First National Bank had closed its doors and they would not be able to pay me . I never received a cent from that bank.
I had some trucks that I had used in the construction business and so I started my own trucking business. While I was making trucking runs to Arizona, I became more and more aware of the advantages my family could have if I moved them to Mesa. This was a very difficult decision to make. I had built us a nice home on a ranch that we had homesteaded. It was nicer than any that was in town. But it was difficult to get the family to school and church meetings . In 1935, we decided to move our family to Mesa. When we left Bluewater, I gave the home and ranch to my older brother Fred who was handicapped because of poor vision
In Mesa, we build a home on South Mesa Drive at the end of 2nd Avenue. We lived there for three years. We then bought a home and 10 acres on 4th Avenue, now known as Broadway. Here we raised our family, staying there until they were all married.
In 1938, I built the first cement grain elevator in Mesa, the largest of its kind in the valley. My three sons went into business with me and in 1952, we bought a grain elevator in Tremonton Utah. In 1954, we bought a home in Salt Lake, near our daughters and we spend our summers in Utah and the winters in Arizona. We loved the view of the temple, Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains.
In 1960, we received a call to return to the Mesa temple to officiate in that temple. We thought our call would be for only 3 years and so we kept our Salt Lake home. In 1968, after 8 years of temple service, we found that it was difficult to maintain two homes and so we sold our home in Utah. Our Mesa home is comfortable, the winters are mild and it is near the temple. We know that the Lord has blessed us and we have found great joy in the twenty-six years that we have been ordinance workers. Our first calling to work in the temple came in 1937.
I have had many spiritual experiences in my life and have been blessed as I have served in various callings in the Church. According to Andrew Jensen, church historian, I was the youngest presiding elder in the church at one time. I have served as group leader in the Elders and High Priests Quorums. Also as superintendent of the MIA and Sunday School I have been a counselor in a ward bishopric and in the stake presidency. I have also served as stake High Priest group leader.
Let me tell you about one of these callings. I have learned that one of the greatest blessings that can come to any of us is that we can talk to our heavenly father. I know that if we seek him humbly and sincerely, that he will hear and answers our prayers. I first learned the power of prayer when I was 8 years old. Mother had sent my sister Libby and I to feed the horses. We had to walk across a field of blue grass to get to the locked feed box. Libby reached for the key and discovered that she had lost it while we were walking through the field. We knew that it would be difficult if not impossible to find the key without the Lords help. We knelt down and Libby prayed to our father in heaven, asking his direction in fi nding the lost key. We started retracing our steps across the field and hadn't gone to far when I looked down that there was the key. Libby reminded me that without the lords help and his answering our prayer that we could not have found the key. From that day to this, prayer has been an important part of my life.
One time Marie was critically ill in the LDS hospital. The doctors told me that she probabl y wouldn't recover. I was standing in the door of her hospital room and I started to pray to the Lord, asking him to bless my companion and to make her well. About the same time, President McKay walked down the hall in the opposite direction. I learned later that he was there to visit his brother. After a while, he came back down the hall, past the nurses station and stopped at mothers room. President McKay gave her a blessing and her condition improved immediately. I knew that the Lord has sent his prophet in answer to my prayers.
To each of my children, Willis, Ivan, Melba, Wanda Frieda and Lars and their loving companions, I express my love and thankfulness for each of you and your families. At this time, we have a total posterity of 88. We thank the Lord for each and every one. To my wonderful family I would like to bear my testimony. I know that God lives and that he has called prophets to direct his work to here upon this earth. I am thankful to my Father in Heaven and the Savior, Jesus Christ, for making it possible to be resurrected. I am thankful for the privilege I have had of coming to this earth and the blessing of having a wonderful wife and companion and the knowledge that we will be together for all eternity. I am grateful for my wonder family and I pray that they will always remember to keep the Lords commandments and to teach their children the importance of keeping those commandments. I know that if they will stay close to the Lord, that he will bless them with the peace of mind, happiness in this life and the life to come. I bear this testimony to my family, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
70 YEARS OF MARRIAGE In the age of quickie divorces, it's nice to see a couple like Frihoff and Marie Nielson. At the end of this month they'll celebrate their 70th wedding aniversary. The Nielsons have another record to be proud of: they're the longest serving Temple workers in Arizona. They each have logged 26 years as set-apart workers. Well, this may not be a record but it's worth noting. Brother and sister Nielson, who are 88 and 87 years old respectively, have 76 great-grandchildren. or is it 78? Brother Nielson says he knows it's somewhere around there.
WHAT'S THEIR SECRET? To what do the Nielsons owe their long life and marriage? "stay active to the church and he'll keep you here for your mission and he won't take you before you're done," said brother Nielson. Brother Nielson should know-he's had several close calls. About a year and a half ago, he suffered his first heart attack. He took it with a dee p breath. Then three months later, he had another one. A little deeper breath, and then ano ther heart attack came three months later. Despite all this, the Nielsons continue to attend the Temple, until three months ago, because of his heart condition, the Nielsons have been going daily to the Temple. Sister Nielson continues to be a regular Temple-goer and they both are active in their Mesa 15TH Ward, Mesa Central Stake, where she is a visiting teacher.
HOW DID THEY MEET? The Nielsons were married in Bluewater, N.M., in the home of their bishop on OCT. 29, 19 14. He was 18 and she was 17. It wasn't until April of the next year that they earned money to be married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 11, 1915. They then moved to Arizona in 1835. Together they served as Temple workers from 1837 to 1948. In 1958, they moved to Salt Lake City to be with their three daughters but were called back to Arizona to work in the Temple again in 1960. They were released in 1976. Brother Nielson served as president of the Elders quorum at 19, was in the Mesa 5TH Ward Bishopric and served 10 years in the Mesa Stake Presidency. Sister Nielson served as relief society president when the Mesa Ward included Gilbert, Chandler and Lehi too. She has also served as mutual president and has had positions in the primary and Sunday school.
WILL THEY BE HONORED? The Nielsons will be honored at an open house on Saturday, OCT 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Mesa 15 Ward Meetinghouse, 1345 E. University. The Nielson's six children are serving as hosts. They are: Willis F. Nielson and Lars P. Nielson, both of Mesa; and Melba Cram, Ivan R. Nielson, Wanda Ericson, and Frieda Ross all of Salt Lake City. Guests fron six states are expected to attend.

ENCYCLOPEDIC HISTORY OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
"It was nice to read Dad's blessings once again. He was a wonderful father and he truly loved the Lord and strived to serve him always. I remember the Sunday before he died, I was in Mesa taking care of him and helping mother. He was so frail and yet he felt that he needed to attend Sacrament meeting, and partake the Sacrament. I helped him get dressed and that took great effort on his part. We sat on the back row, so that he didn't have to walk further. That meeting will always be etched in my mind as I remember a faithful father, who once again taught me the importance of attending Sacrament meeting." Aunt Wanda
Thanks Tina. I remember as I was there taking care of Dad, that many times each day, he would asked to be helped out of his bed and wanted to kneel and pray for a child that he felt was straying. He never wanted to lay in bed to pray no matter how hard it was to get out and kneel - even with a cathater- he wanted to kneel and plead with our Heavenly Father. It was a great lesson of prayer and faith to me. I shall always be grateful for that teaching. Aunt Frieda

Patriarchal Blessing for Marie Cluff Nielson Mesa, Arizona, 15 January 1936 A Blessing given by Charles R. Jones, Patriarch, upon the head of Marie Cluff Nielson, daughter of Hyrum Albert Cluff and Rhoda Matilda (Haws) Cluff, born 4 April 1897, at Pima, Graham Co, Arizona.
SISTER MARIE NIELSON: By the authority of the holy priesthood which I hold, as a Patriarch in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days (sic) Saints, I place my hands upon thy head and give thee a blessing, according to the desire of thy heart, and pray God that the influence of His spirit may accompany this blessing so that it will be an inspiration to thee to continue thy labors among the people of the earth for many years yet to come. Thou art a chosen daughter of the Lord, born of goodly parents, even pioneers who have sacrificed much of their time and means in order that their posterity might enjoy the blessings of life; and there awaits thee during the remainder of thy years upon the earth a mission of importance, one which will bring to thee joy and satisfaction in knowing that thou art a member of the true church of Christ. All former blessings which thou hast received through the servants of God I confirm upon thee, and every promise which is yet to be fulfilled will come to pass, and thou shalt receive many choice blessings, even those which cannot be comprehended at this time, for there are many things for thee to do among the people with whom thou shalt associate and among thy family and friends. Thou shalt be respected and loved by all of thine associates and will be able to have gathered about thee those who are near and dear, those who will administer to thy comfort and wants and who will take delight in doing things which will bring joy to thee. The satisfaction that will come through the service which thou hast rendered in the past and the sacrifice which thou hast made will be filled to thy entire satisfaction, and there will come to thee peace and joy which can come from no other source than that of rendering real service among the children of men. Thy name will be known for good. Thy friends will be numerous, and as thou shalt grow in years there will come to thee many opportunities of assisting those who are in need and distress, to help them and strengthen them so that they can continue their journey in life. The Lord will require of thee sacrifices of this character, and while it may tire thy body physically thou shalt be buoyed up in spirit and strength and made equal to every task which will come to thee. Thy loved ones will rally around thee continually and it will be their delight to listen to thy words, to take thine advice and counsel in times when they are discouraged with the affairs of life. Thou shalt see many important events transpire, for in the future years of thy life conditions will be such that thou shalt be called to stand as one who is not afraid to defend truth and virtue, and thy life will be an example to all of thine associates for good. Thou are a member of the House of Israel, through the lineage of Ephraim, and entitled to receive thy share of blessings, privileges, and endowments which have been promised to the faithful children of that great house-hold. Thou shalt never want for the necessities and comforts of life, and shall have plenty to bestow upon the poor and needy. Thy basket will be filled to overflowing, and because of thy faithfulness thou shalt receive many blessings which at this time thou canst not understand or comprehend. The blessings of Wisdom, power, and understanding, with a keen mind of discernment will be given to thee, and thou shalt enjoy these gifts upon many occasions. Continue to raise thy voice in defense of truth. Be mindful of the youth of Zion, and seek to help them by kind words and deeds which will bring joy to their souls and will save them from the snares and pit-fa lls (sic) of the evil one which will be placed in their path-way (sic). The gift and power of eternal life, with all the blessings appertaining thereto, I seal upon thee and I say unto thee, dear sister, be faithful, true, and devoted to the Lord. Seek Him continually in humble prayer, and He will hear and answer thee, and no blessing which will be for thy good will be with held (sic). I bless thee with health and strength in body and mind and say unto thee, because of thy faithfulness in the past, thy days shall be long in the future, and thou shalt have the privilege of living just as long as it is thy desire to live upon the earth. There is a mission awaiting thee in the temples of the Lord to do work for the dead to help redeem that great host of spirits who are anxiously waiting to be libe rated so that they can enjoy the blessings of the Gospel. Put forth every effort to spend much of thy time doing work for those who are not able to do it for themselves. Obey the promptings and be guided by the sweet influence of the spirit of thy guardian angel who is watching over thee by day and night, and thou shalt find peace, joy, and contentment, and the blessings of Heaven and earth will not be with held (sic) from thee, but there will come to thee a peace which cannot come from any other source than by being a true daughter of Zion. This blessing I seal upon thee, through thy faithfulness, sealing thee up against the power of the destroyer until the day of redemption, to come forth in the morning of the first resurrection and mingle with thy loved ones upon the earth. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Signed, Charles R. Jones Patriarch
