Mary Lee Christian
Mary Lee Christian, 91, of Denton died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Denton Regional Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 17, 1912, in Honey Grove to Henry Green Smith and Edna Clara Hendrix Smith.
She attended Ladonia High School and Marcum Hospital Nursing School.
On June 11, 1934, she married Albert Bascum Christian in Paris. He died May 3, 1968.
She was a member of the Southmont Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. Dr. Larry Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Fannin Memorial Gardens in Bonham.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at the funeral home.
Survivors include two daughters, Clara Viola London of Leonard and Elizabeth Ann Cox of Mount Pleasant; five sons, Albert Lee Christian and James Robert Christian, both of Oakdale, La., John Wayne Christian of Dallas, and Harry Daniel Christian and Larry Donald Christian, both of Denton; two sisters, Gertrude Augusta Beall and Wilma Ruth Samuel, both of Denton; two brothers, Carl Edward Smith of Shreveport, La., and Joe Evan Smith of Mesquite; 25 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and two 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Christine Clara Clements, and two brothers, Henry Raymond Smith and Leeman Alvis Smith.

Jonathan was a farmer in Clear Creek Twp., Fairfield Co., OH. He also ran a saw mill, grist mill and cider press. Was a charter member and trustee of the Reformed Church at Stoutsville, OH. Printed cemetery records state he died at age 84y 16m 28d. Obviously the "16m" is in error - probably was 6m. The obituary of his daughter Isabel states that her parents had four sons and seven daughters.

K. Feisel located a document in the deed offices of Fairfield Co., OH describing the sale to Jonathan Stout by his parents George and Mary Stout, for the sum of $1280.00, a tract of land described as being in the SE quarter of Section 7, Twp. 12, Range 20. This would have been in Clearcreek Twp., Fairfield Co., just north of the present-day town of Stoutsville. The witness to this transaction was William Leist, J.P.

Charles Goslin's "Notebooks on Fairfield Co." - Vol. IV on Clear Creek Twp. churches - lists a land transaction dated Sept. 22, 1858 (Deed Book 25, pg. 266) - which includes the info that Jonathan Stout was a member of the Consistory of the "Tarlton Charge of the German Reformed Church." The land was located in the SW corner of Section 17, Clear Creek Twp. It is unclear as to whether the Jonathan Stout mentioned in the deed was Jonathan S. Stout or Jonathan C. Stout

She returned to Boonville to stay with Grandma Scott. Then Grandma Scott moved in with Granny and after Grandma Scott died Aunt Marie sold the house on First Street and moved in with Granny on Second Street. She was a Pink Lady at the Hospital. **From deeds, censuses, and family information I believe the following about Samuel Rarick: He was born 14 August 1817 in Pennsylvania, a son of John and Elizabeth (Hassinger) Rarick. The family moved to Erie Co, New York when Samuel was a boy (between 1820 and 1830) settling first in Boston, Erie Co. and then moving to Aurora, Erie Co. Samuel had an older brother, Jacob, and a younger sister, Mary (called Polly). His mother died before 1836 and Samuel and his siblings were named as heirs in the will of their maternal grandfather, Jacob Hassinger. In December of 1836 their father John was named as their guardian for them so that they could receive the lagacy from their grandfather. Samuel bought land in Aurora in November 1845 (lot 60) and must have met Celestia Arabella Clark around that time. He sold his land in Aurora in April 1847 shortly before he and Celestia married on 4 July 1847. I haven't yet determined why they were married in Montpelier, Vermont, but it could be because Celestia's Uncle Will and Aunt Fanny lived there and, since her mother was deceased, they may have helped with her wedding. Samuel and Celestia were briefly in Wyandot, by Falls Church, Fairfax Co, Virginia where their first child, Mary was born. By October 1850 they had moved to Rockport, Cuyahoga Co, Ohio where they are listed in the census. In Rockport four sons were born: Edwin, Frank, Charles and William. Celestia's sister, Almira and her husband, Peter Bruso, had also come to Ohio from New York and together they left for MI in the summer of 1860, probably shortly after the 1860 census was taken. Samuel and his family and Peter Bruso and his family each bought 20 acres (adjoining) of land in Carmel Twp, Eaton Co, MI in November of 1860 and began farming. Samuel was also a carpenter and probably used those skills to build a house and also to earn extra money. The Raricks were not wealthy, however. Peter Bruso and his wife decided to move back to New York in 1862 and sold their 20 acres to Samuel. Maybe it was too much for Samuel or his finances were tight, but for whatever reason, he sold the 40 acres of land to Sarah Olger for $1000 in September 1863. I assume he moved closer to Kalamo at this time, but don't find any other deed records until September of 1870 when he bought 160 acres of land north of Lawrence Highway. When I drove by the land in May 2003, it appeared to be rolling hills with some flat land and a creek running through it. It didn't seem to be conducive to great productivity and so may have been mostly for family use. I would guess that Samuel continued to use his carpenter skills to earn extra money. Since Samuel's sons, Edwin and Charles sold 20 acres of a parcel of land near the above mentioned land in December 1880 [ a month after Samuel's death], it's possible that Samuel also had owned that land and I just can't find a deed. They also later sold 60 acres, so it could have been an 80 acre parcel. According to a letter written by Samuel's son, Frank, he helped build a brick church in Kalamo "about 1869 or 1870" and it was still standing in 1938 when Frank wrote the letter. In May 2003, I found the Methodist church in Kalamo was still standing. It is brick (the only brick church in Kalamo) and the sign over the door says "1868" so I'm sure it is the church referred to. Samuel died in Novemeber 1880 [Frank says 1879, but Samuel was still alive in the 1880 census taken in June 1880]. Frank also says his father was buried in the Kalamo Cemetery which is just behind the church. The cemetery records, however, were destroyed and there is no headstone found for Samuel. 1. Marriage information from IGI batch #A184624 Celestia A. Rarick of Kalamo bought a parcel of land (four and one half acres of in the NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 17 of Twp 2 N Range 6 W) from John & Mary Mason and William & Minnie Mason on 15 April 1881 for $157.50. She sold the same parecel of land to William A. Green on 16 April 1886 for $200. I drove by this land in May 2003 and it lies on a corner of two roads (Lawrence and Mason) and has a house and barn on it. Behind the house was a large corn field. I don't know if this house was there in the 1880s when Celestia owned the land and I'm not sure she even lived on it. It's possible she bought it after Samuel died for an investment. The land she and Samuel lived on in Kalamo is about one mile east of Mason Rd. on the north side of Lawrence Rd.
