General Notes: Husband -

William Childress received his M.D. from the Medical College of Georg ia at Augusta in 1858. The original diploma is in the possession of Elizabeth Childress Reynolds of Marietta, Georgia.

William Childress enlisted 26 September 1861 as a private in the Wright Legion of the Georgia Volunteers, which later became Company K, 38th Regiment, Georgia Infantry of the Confederate Army. He was listed as "present" from his enlistment until December 1861, and listed as "detached" from January to February 1862 to serve as a hospital steward. William Childress was listed as "present" from March 1862 until 20 June 1862, when he was wounded in the left hip during the Seven Days Fight near Richmond, Virginia. He was listed as "at home wounded" from June to October 1862, when he rejoined his regiment. He was listed as "present" from November 1862 until 19 October 1864, when he was wounded in the left shoulder and right leg during the battle of Cedar Creek near Strasburg, Virginia. He was treated for his injuries on this occasion at General Hospital Number 9 in Richmond, Virginia.

William Childress died 01 October 1909 at his residence, 43 Ponders Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia.

Mrs. Mary Chiles, 83, of Clovis died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born in a small town in Kentucky on Sept. 30, 1920, to Albert and Rhea Morris. She married Albert Chiles on May 20, 1937, in Muleshoe.
There are many words that can be used to describe Mary, a family member said: loving, caring, unselfish, courageous, dependable, respectable and many more.
She was the ultimate caregiver to many.
She will be missed in a way that only the people who knew her would understand.
She loved to dance, play her organ, play dominoes with just about anyone and play pool. She was a longtime member of the Eagles and always kept active.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many in her lifetime, the family member said.
She loved life, and loved making people happy, so much so that she always put others in front of herself.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Nan Walker of Washington; and her husband of 62 years.
Survivors include a sister, Jane Burchette of Clovis; three children, Mary Case and Rose Shropshire, both of Clovis, and Dewey Chiles of Longmont, Colo.; three grandchildren, Rhonda Hutton, Ronnie Hutton and Lori Nolan, all of Amarillo; and four great-grandchildren, Renae Phillips, Ryan Hutton, Isiah Nolan and Jacob Nolan, all of Amarillo.
The Rev. Joel Horne will officiate the service.
Burial will be in Melrose Cemetery.

Ernie was also know as William Pierce. A name he used to write letter s. He told people he was an FBI agent. He was hit in the head with a brick by a husband while working for a doctor delivering drugs and they say he was never the same again. Earnie was dishonorably discharged from the Army, but died in the Dayton VA hospital in OH. On visits he acted odd, swatting fly that were not there. He stayed in a trailer on (sister Mildred's husband) Robert Simpson's farm in Otwell for a short time, only to flee when a dog had puppies. He put them in the stove and tried to burn them before disappearing again.
