General Notes: Wife -

Aunt Bett first married Sheffield and had a son Andrew Sheffield. Andrew was living with his grandparents in 1930 in Dallas co. TX. Andrew also gave the information on the death certificate when his grandfather A.J. Butler died in 1939. Andrew's age is 16 in the 1930 census.

Betty Jane Butler married Willie Ernest Grissom on 21 July 1919 in Burrow County, Ok. Willie Grissom served in the army in WWI. They lived in Dallas where their children were born and moved to Ok. in 1932. Their children are Maggie Hudson and J. C. Grissom. Willie Ernest Grissom died 21 Dec. 1940 and both are buried in the Wilson cemetery near Clarita Ok.

The 1930 Dallas co. TX census precinct 1 has Willie E. Grissom with wife Bettie both born in TN as were their parents, daughter Maggie born in OK and son John C. born in TX.

Bettie was born October 6, 1891 in Franklin County, Tennessee according to the information given at the time of her death.

Bettie died May 5, 1976 at Rt. 5, Coalgate, Oklahoma and was buried onFriday , May 7, 1976 in the Wilson Cemetery in Clarita, Oklahoma.

Henry White was born in 1891 in Gilstrap, Kentucky. His parents were Woodford H. and Rose Ann (Cook) White. His name was actually McHenry, but he never went by that. He married Cynthia Butler. Her parents were Joseph J. Butler and Drucilla E. Snodgrass and she was born in March 28, 1901 in Gilstrap, Kentucky.
In 1944 they moved to Shreve, Ohio and Henry worked at the Timken Roller Bearing Company. He died on November 11, 1955 and is buried at the Shreve Cemetery. He and Cynthia had 4 daughters and 2 sons. Cynthia remarried to Leroy Boulton. Cynthia worked at the Sieberling and Wooster Rubber companies and at Horn Nursery Home. She was a member of the Westwood Baptist Church in Wooster, Ohio. She died on August 9, 1999 and is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Shreve, Ohio. Childrenof Henry and Cynthia are: Audley White Wilma White Oscar White Virgie White Loretta White Leota C. Elmer Hoyt Butler, 82, of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Medicalodge East. Graveside services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Cremation has been effected. Hoyt was born July 18, 1926, in Arkansas City, to Mitchell E. and Verna A. (Hoyt) Butler. He was reared and educated in Arkansas City. Hoyt worked as a deliveryman for Santa Fe Foods for many years. Survivors include his brother, Virgil Butler; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Cecilia Bangs.

The A. F. Dennis family Bible was in possession of Inis Dennis Watson, widow of Clure Judson Dennis, son of A. F. Dennis. Pages were copied and sent to me in 1988. Aunt Inis stated that this Bible had belonged to Thomas J. M. Dennis, father of Alfred. James H Dennis's birth is recorded as November 23, 1895. James's birth entry is the last readable entry on the first page of births that began with his grandfather Thomas J. M. Dennis.

James Hollis Dennis was living in Lily Dale, Clay co. TN when he registered for the draft during WWI May 29, 1917. He gives his occupation as farmer but is currently unemployed. He is single and was born in Farmers Branch TX. He is short and slender with dark blue eyes and brown hair. James Hollis Dennis Private of Sixteenth Company, Onehundred Sixty Second Depot Brigade, U.S. Army was inducted on the twenty fourth of June 1918 at Celina, Texas to serve for the period of the emergency and was honorably discharged the fourteenth of February 1919. He also served in the Battery E. 52nd Field Artillery. Many of the men in Granddaddy's company came down with influenza just before they were to be sent overseas during WW I. The war ended prior to their leaving.

A discharge certificate in lieu of lost or destroyed certificate was issued the ninth of September 1931 and a certificate of birth issued January 12, 1942 in Dallas County, Texas for James Hollis Dennis indicating his birth date of November 23, 1895 in Carrollton, Dallas County, Texas. Samuel K. Dennis and A. R. Milloway are given as knowledgable of the facts of birth. James's parents are listed as Alfred Fredrick Dennis of Farmers Branch, Texas age 29, a farmer born in Tennessee. His mother is Hattie E Patterson of Farmers Branch, Texas, housewife, age 27 and born in Tennessee.

"Runt" as my grandfather was called by everyone including my grandmother, was born in Farmers Branch where he lived until about the age of three when his mother died in childbirth with her fourth child. "Tutt" took his three young children back to Tennessee where he married his second wife Ova who was a niece of Hattie. Grandaddy left his unhappy home as soon as he was old enough and came back to Texas.

~James Hollis Dennis was first married to ?. She was later married and her son was Tom Hughes director of the Dallas Summer Musicals. My mother and Tommy played together as children without knowing that her father was once married to his mother. I have not been able to find a marriage for them in early Dallas co. marriages.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate for J. H. Dennis and Miss Hallie Butler dated September 9, 1924, Dallas Texas by T. H. Alexander Justice of the Peace, returned and filed Sept. 13, 1924. The original is in the possession of Sue Dennis Hayes, daughter of James and Hallie. They were living in Coppell Texas at the time of their first child's birth and death.

In the 1850 Census of Carroll Co, TN, there was a Marion Jones listed in C laiborne Parish's household. He was born about 1836 in NC This could be a relative and Claiborne was his guardian. Marion Jones was not listed on any other census of Carroll Co, TN. In the 1880 Census of Carroll Co, TN., there was a John Clark living in the household of Claiborne Parish. He was listed as a laborer and was born about 1859. Birth date for Claiborne is October 19, 1816 according to the book titled "The Descendants of Thomas Pincerna, Progenitor of the Butler Family" pg 228. It also states that Claibourne was the son of David Parish, which is wrong. He was the son of John Sihon Parish who migrated from Granville Co, NC After the death of his first wife on October 6, 1857, Claibourne married (2) Louisa McAuley. She was the widow of Calvin McAuley. They had a daughter, Louisa. Julith and her husband had several children. Professor Allen asserted that Judith J. Butler was the daughter of William L. Butler, rather than James M. Butler, as believed by the writer of the book mentioned above.

In the 1850 Census of Carroll Co, TN, there was a Marion Jones listed in C laiborne Parish's household. He was born about 1836 in NC This could be a relative and Claiborne was his guardian. Marion Jones was not listed on any other census of Carroll Co, TN. In the 1880 Census of Carroll Co, TN., there was a John Clark living in the household of Claiborne Parish. He was listed as a laborer and was born about 1859. Birth date for Claiborne is October 19, 1816 according to the book titled "The Descendants of Thomas Pincerna, Progenitor of the Butler Family" pg 228. It also states that Claibourne was the son of David Parish, which is wrong. He was the son of John Sihon Parish who migrated from Granville Co, NC After the death of his first wife on October 6, 1857, Claibourne married (2) Louisa McAuley. She was the widow of Calvin McAuley. They had a daughter, Louisa. Julith and her husband had several children. Professor Allen asserted that Judith J. Butler was the daughter of William L. Butler, rather than James M. Butler, as believed by the writer of the book mentioned above.

Death Claims Nora Butler - Former Decatur Woman is Death's Victim at Fremont, Ind. Residence
Word was received by residents and friends here today of the death of Mrs. Nora Butler, 58, wife of Mel Butler, who died at her home at Fremont, Indiana, at midnight, Tuesday. The cause of death was not stated in the message.
Mrs. Butler was born in this city and lived here until eight years ago when she moved with her husband to Fremont. She was a member of the methodist Episcopal church in this city and was well known here.
She is survived by her husband, Mel Butler, and the following children: Mrs. Frances Coffee of Fort Wayne; Mrs. Lucille Stalter of Louisiana; Fred Butler of Atlantic City, N.J.; Mrs. Forrest Vail of Fort Wayne. Two brothers, Dave and Harve Rice of this city, and two sisters survive.
Dave and Harve Rice left immediately after receiving word for Fremont and will bring the reamins to this city for burial. The funeral arrangements have not been made. FREMONT, Mrs. Mel J. Butler, aged 58 years, died suddenly about 11:00 o'clock Tuesday evening, June 14. Mr. and Mrs. Butler came here about five years ago as manager of the Kroger store and had made many friends in this community. mrs. Butler had been in the storre until about 12:00 o'clock Tuesday. The deceased is survived by her husband, six children, Fred Butler of Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. A. F. Stalter, of Dallas, Tex., Dick Butler, Mrs. F. E. Vail, Mres. C. M. Coffee of Fort Wayne, Mrs. D. Thor Gunderson, 73, formerly of Nettle Creek Township, died Oct 6 in Los
Angles, Calif., where funeral services and burial took place.
Mr. Gunderson was born in Nettle Creek Township Jan 11,1889 and was a
son of the late Ole and Julia Gunderson. He was survived by two sisters, Mrs.
Bert Thorson, Morris, and Mrs Peter Cassem of Swea City, Ia. Seven sister and
two brothers preceded him in death.
Notes from Darryl
Yesterday looking throught my mothers notes I noticed that Thor Gunderson
daughter Julia visited June and Agnes Olson in 1970. She wanted to know if her
fathers body was buried in Illinois. When he died someone in California wanted
to know if someone in the family wanted to ship his body to Illinois but Thor's
closes relatives did not want to pay the expense. In 1970 Julia was living in
Kansas City. She was married at the time. The notes said Thor Jr. lived in Tyler
Texas in 1934 and he spent part of his later life in southern Illinois.

Charles W. White was the last child born of William E. and Margaret M.(Snodgrass) White. He was born in Dexterville, Butler Co, KY on July 25, 1878. In 1899 he married Stella Wilson Butler. She was born on February 19, 1883, and her parents were Joseph J. Butler and Laura L. James. He was a farmer. They had one son and 2 daughters Stella died on April 12, 1907 and in December 1915, Charlie remarried to Delia Smith of Butler Co, KY. She was born on July 1, 1890. They moved to Atlanta, Illinois where they owned a feed store. In 1930 they lived in Funks Grove Township of McLean Co, Illinois.
