The Family of Martin Burbidge of Worksop, Nottinghamshire
Martin
was the youngest son of William Burbidge and his wife
Fanny. Martin was born in Hampshire and
married his wife Annie Bolt in Southampton in 1894. Why did Martin go to Worksop?
Martins father William and his second wife Caroline moved to Worksop in the 1900’s. Martin and his family went too. What was the attraction? Perhaps
it was work.
The
mines had been expanding fast during the 19th Century and it is
known that Martin and at least one of his sons became miners. William, Martin’s father was the licensee of
the Robin Hood Inn, Mirfield,
Yorkshire. He also had two shops, in
the same area. According to a postcard we have found William also had a farm.
Martin lived in Bumblebee Cottages in isolated countryside north of Worksop. Martins father William also lived
in one of the cottages with his wife Caroline.
The Priory Church, Worksop has also played a part in the family history with several family members being baptised and married there.
Worksop is just north of Sherwood Forest famous for Robin Hood. Nottingham is also famous for its lace.
