Miler Who Made Sporting

A man who
made sporting history more than 90 years ago was Dorset-born Charles Bennett,
who worked as an engine driver at Bournemouth Central Station. At the Paris
Olympics in July 1900, he won Britain’s first ever track and field gold medal
in the 1500 metres. In fact, he returned from Paris with two golds and a silver
and two world records after coming second in the 4,000 metre steeplechase and
leading Britain to victory in the 5,000 metre team race. Yet his name and achievements have been
largely forgotten in his native county and by the British sporting public-though
not by Wimborne Athletic Club's James Eldred, who provided the details!
Charles
Bennett- born Shapwick, near Wimborne, in 1870-was 26 when he won his first AAA
title over four miles in 1897.Two years later he won the AAA titles at four and
10 miles and the national cross-country championship. More titles followed in
1900 including the AAA's mile. His
winning time of 4 min 28.2 sec was not exceptional even in 1900 but, as one
sports writer remarked, it was "not a vintage year for milers". In
Paris, favourite for the 1500 was American John Cregan, who had clocked the
fastest time in the world that year at 4 min 24.4 sec. But he withdrew on
sabbatical grounds leaving Bennett and the local hero Henri Deloge - the world
record holder at 1,000 metres- as the main contenders. It was a close race
which Bennett won in 4 min 06.2 sec, four 10ths of a second ahead of the
Frenchman. Officially the time was a world record, although many athletes had
covered 1,500 metres faster in non-metric miles.
The
Guinness Book of British Olympians described Bennett as a "much
under-rated athlete" whose double was the finest by a British athlete
since Fred Elborough broke two world records- for 220yds and 880 yds- in one
afternoon in 1876. Bennett's Olympic season closed with a challenge match in Manchester
against Britain's 800 m Olympic gold medalist Alfred Tyso.
They met over three-quarters of a mile and again it
was a close race which Tysoe won in 3 min 13 sec. But
Bennett's British record of 3min and 10.6 sec
survived. Charles Bennett died in
