Alice Kate FRAMPTON was born on the 29 January 1883 in
Christchurch, Hampshire, (daughter of Frank FRAMPTON
and Maria HASKELL).
She was married on the 7 April
1907, in St Andrews Church Enfield Middlesex, to William Pitt BULL. William was born on the 8 April
1886 in Bethnal Green Middlesex, (son of Sydney Louis PITT
and Lucy Rebecca BULL) Occupation Packing Case Maker.
William died on the 15 November 1962 in Hackney London and was buried on the 15
November 1962 at Woodgrange Park Cemetery London.
Alice died 26 April 1970, at the
Chest Hospital, Bethnal Green and London. He was cremated c1970 at the City Of
London Crematorium.
Alice Frampton was born in
Christchurch in 1883 and moved to Highcliffe in 1886. Alice went to the local
school. Her uncle was very religious and
founded the Methodist Church in Highcliffe. Alice had a relationship with
Charles Cardy, a local lad, and found herself pregnant. Her family, as was the custom in those days,
sent her away. Alice came to London aged 19, destitute and pregnant. A Dr Roberts befriended her. Her son, Charles was born in 1902 at the
Queens Charlottes Hospital Marylebone and was later fostered by a relative of
her future husband, William Bull. The
relative was Alice Shaw (nee Bull) Alice was in service at this time.
She told her grandchildren that she remembered
the time of the suffragettes. She once
helped a lady who was being chased by police.
She hid her in the house where she was in service. She vowed, that she would always vote,
however difficult, because of the terrible things these ladies went through to
get women the vote. Alice and William were married 1907, their daughter Lilian
was born in 1908 and later their son Willi. Their son Francis was born 1912 at
22 Deleney Road Kennington Francis.
Their son Willy died aged 4, from Meningitis. Later, came their son Sidney
and daughter Doris. They eventually moved to 131 Richmond Road where they lived
with William's mother, Lucy Prideaux, stepfather, Frank Prideaux and Lucy's
mother Lucy Jackson. Things were not easy for Alice. Her relationship with William was often difficult. They went for months, if not years, not
talking. We grandchildren were oblivious
to the problems. Only later, after
William died and the writer was older, having long conversations with Alice,
did the truth come out. During the great strike, I understand William joined
the strikers and life became unbearable.
Alice often went without food so she could feed her children. During the
war Alice was evacuated to her hometown of Highcliffe, Hampshire, with her daughter
Doris. William stayed behind and lived
for some of the time with son Frank. In
1942 Alice and William returned to 131 Richmond Road. Their son Sid was killed
at Cassino, Italy, just before the end of the war. As Alice's youngest son she must of found
this very difficult. She loved all her
children, but to lose a son of and a son of 23 would be very difficult for any
woman to bear. She was a lovely old
lady; I wish I had got to know her better when I was younger. But when you are young, you think they will
always be there. I am just pleased to
say I knew her. Alice died in 1970 aged 87, after fighting cancer for two
years. How she went through the
operations and treatment and was still able to laugh and joke shows the
strength of her character.
