The
Smith family of Lanark and Edinburgh has been most difficult to trace. They did
not belong to the Church of Scotland; thus, their records do not often appear
in the parish records. The common thread that has helped in locating this
family is the trade of umbrella makers.
John,
son of Gavin, went to Edinburgh where he established the umbrella trade. When
he died he left the trade to John Smith, son of Alexander Smith. When the
second John died, he left a will naming many of his siblings in addition to his
children. This will has helped in locating other branches of this family
The Smiths were in Lanark, Scotland in the
1700's. Given the date of the marriage
of Gavin Smith and Catherine Reid and the birth of Alexander, it is almost
certain that there other children.
Our early records for Alexander Smith list
him as a cow feeder, but later he is listed as an umbrella maker.
