If you suspect that you have Native American ancestors, be sure to check out the government's NAIL site. They can help you find your DOSS ancestors on-line. The image below was taken from the Enrollment of the Eastern Cherokee, 1908-1910 by Guion Miller. This particular page shows the 1909 DOSS surnames recorded. The application numbers are on the left of the applicant's name and the state they were living in at the time of their application is to the right of their name. You can see a "handwritten" name on this page also. This name and application number was added to the roll after the index had been typed. An excellent research "tip" will be to search the female lines in your DOSS families along with all SIBLINGS. If one of your Cherokee descendants did not apply for the Guion Miller rolls it is quite likely that one of the sibling's descendants will have done so. If you find one who was refused admittance to the Guion Miller Roll, or any other roll..it does not mean they were not Cherokee...it more likely means that they did not meet the residency requirements.
