The surname Jones has been understandably difficult to
research. The earliest known Jones I have been able to locate is Edwin
Jones the gt-gt grandfather of my husband. His marriage is recorded to
Margaret Elizabeth Tracey on 1 September 1851 at St Peter's Church,
Melbourne in the county of Bourke, Australia. Witnesses to the marriage were
Robert Walker and Sarah Clapham, both of Melbourne. Edwin's occupation was
recorded as a sawyer.
Margaret came to New Zealand between 1856 and December 1857 when their third son
Edwin was born in New Plymouth. Known children of Edwin and Margaret were:
b. 1852, Melbourne
b. 1856, Melbourne
b 2 December 1857 New Plymouth
b. 27 November 1859, Wanganui
born 27 November 1859 Wanganui
died 11 April 1864
born November 1864
died 5 February 1865
Edwin died on
20 February 1865 at Wanganui. He is buried in Heads Road Cemetery, Wanganui.
His headstone reads:

Also of Margaret Emma daughter of the above who departed this life
11 April 1864 aged 17 months.

Also Margaret beloved wife of the above

The Lord Restoreth me and
I shall want nothing.
He hath set me in a place of pasture.
He hath bought me on the water of refreshment
He hath comforted my soul.
He hath led me on the path of justice for his own names sake.
