Home Henry Edward Jones

Edwin Jones

The surname Jones has been understandably difficult to research.  The earliest known Jones I have been able to locate is Edwin Jones the gt-gt grandfather of my husband.  His marriage is recorded to Margaret Elizabeth Tracey on 1 September 1851 at  St Peter's Church, Melbourne in the county of Bourke, Australia. Witnesses to the marriage were Robert Walker and Sarah Clapham, both of Melbourne. Edwin's occupation was recorded as a sawyer.

Edwin and Margaret came to New Zealand between 1856 and December 1857 when their third son Edwin was born in New Plymouth. Known children of Edwin and Margaret were:

William Henry

b. 1852, Melbourne

John Leonard b. 1856, Melbourne
Edwin b 2 December 1857 New Plymouth
Jane Elizabeth b. 27 November 1859, Wanganui
Robert born 27 November 1859 Wanganui
Margaret Emma born 1862
died 11 April 1864
Mark born November 1864
died 5 February 1865

Edwin died on 20 February 1865 at Wanganui. He is buried in Heads Road Cemetery, Wanganui. His headstone reads:

Sacred to the memory of Edwin Jones who departed this life
20 February 1865  aged 37 years.

Also of Margaret Emma daughter of the above who departed this life
 11 April 1864 aged 17 months.
Also of Mark son of the above who departed this life
5 February 1865 aged 11 weeks
Also Margaret beloved wife of the above
died 19 March 1889 aged 57.

The Lord Restoreth me and I shall want nothing.
He hath set me in a place of pasture.
He hath bought me on the water of refreshment
He hath comforted my soul.
He hath led me on the path of justice for his own names sake.

John Leonard Jones

John Leonard Jones

Their son John Leonard Jones (pictured) was born in 1856 in Melbourne. He married Alice Emma Trussell on the 25 July 1878 in Bulls, New Zealand at the home of John Broughton.  John Broughton and Alice's stepfather Albert Stubbs were the witnesses to the marriage.  They had two children:

Henry Edward born 16 July 1878
Ada born c1880.

John worked as a blacksmith. His wife Alice left him soon after the birth of their daughter Ada. John did not remarry and he died aged 82 on 20 November 1938 at the Auckland Infirmary (later renamed Greenlane Hospital).  His home address was given as 6 Croydon Road, Mt Eden.

He is buried at Waikumete Cemetery.
