James Cock, aged 12 and Joseph Sillick, aged 15, were charged on oath with having stolen a quantity of nuts from on board the trading boat of Joseph Williams, on the river Tamar.

Against Joseph Sillick, there was no true bill. About a gallon of nuts were found at the house of James Cock's mother, under the stairs, after he confessed to the Constable. The Jury found the prisoner guilty, but on account of his youth hoped his Lordship would be lenient in his sentence, which was that he was to be severely whipped. The Judge kindly admonished the boy, telling him that if he came there again, his present offence would be remembered against him.

(Witness) Criminal1122 April 1871Joseph James Sillick was a witness that William Sillick was The Cramlington Riot
The Prisoners before the magistrates
On Saturday, at the Moot Hall Police Court, before Captain Blackett and Addison Potter, a number of minders, concerned in the late riots last week at Cramlington, were brought before the above named magistrates. Deputy Chief Constable Wookey prosecuted, and Mr Joel defended in all the cases. The first case taken was that of Wm Sillick and Ambrose Beekle, convict pitmen, who were charged with having been riotous, and refusing to quit Robert Pyle’s public house at Cramlington on the 7th April last. Mr Wookey in opening the case stated that a number of Cornishmen employed at the Cramlington Colliery got drunk, and went to different public houses on Good Friday night the worse of drink. At each public house they created a row. At one public house a fight commenced between the native pitmen. There were between 50 and 100 of them armed with picks, staves and pick shafts, which were freely used. The disturbance continued until midnight, and the peaceably inclined inhabitants of a village were thrown into a state of fear for themselves. He had taken a modified view of the matter; instead of apprehending them on a warrant he had simply summoned them. A personal named Robert Pyles, landlord of a public house at Cramlington village, stated that on Good Friday night between half past nine and ten o’clock the two defendants came into his house the worse for liquor, and were exceedingly violent. Sillick incited the men to fight. The row reached such a height that he (witness) jumped on a table and said ‘unless every one of you leave I will have you summoned for causing a disturbance in my house’. All the men left the house with the exception of the two defendants, who refused to leave. PC Wood deposed to being in the house at the time of the row. He heard Sillick shout, ‘We have come here for the purpose of a row tonight’. The Bench considered the case proved and ordered each of the defendants to pay a fine of 5s and costs.

Thomas Allen and Joseph Sillick were each fined 10s and costs for being drunk and riotous at Cramlington on the night in question. A number of other men were brought up and ordered to pay fines varying from 2s 6d to 10s each.
