For many years Mr Marshall was one of our most respectable steel manufacturers, and was highly esteemed, not only as a man of business, but in all the relations of his life. He was a useful member of the Directory of the Savings' Bank, and an active Trustee of the Boys' Charity School. The death of this gentleman has produced a feeling of general regret among his townsmen, who had learned to respect him for his solid and unostentatious virtues.

Misc29 December 1888He was The Bequests to the Infirmary and Hospital - We announced yesterday that the late Mr E.A.D. Brooshooft, of Kirkella, East Riding, had left a legacy of 5000pds to the Sheffield Infirmary, and one of 1000pds to the Public Hospital.

Mr Brooshooft's connection with Sheffield was by his marriage with a daughter of the late Mr Jonathan Marshall, steel manufacturer, whose works were in Millsands, and who resided at Pyebank.

Mr Marshall amassed a large fortune; for at that time, he, Mr Huntsman, and the Messrs Walker of Masbro', were the only people in the steel trade, and had the profits to themselves.

Much of this wealth Mr Brooshooft received through his marriage with Mr Marshall's daughter, and to perpetuate his memory he has left a legacy of 3000pds to the National Lifeboat Institution, to found three lifeboats, one of which is to be called "The Jonathan Marshall, Sheffield."

Mrs Brooshooft died a fortnight after her husband.

The use and enjoyment of Endcliffe House with the gardens and pleasure grounds adjoining or near thereto and now occupied by me therewith and also of the stables, coachhouse and other buildings appurtenant to the said dwellinghouse as also the use and enjoyment of all my household, fixtures, furniture, plate, linen, glasses and china, books, pictures, horses and livestock, carriiges,carts, harness, hay, corn and straw, wines, spirits, liquours - provisions and other consumables, articles, garden stock and tools of every kind or quality so ever which at the time of my decease shall be in or about the said dwellinghouse and premises so long as she shall remain unmarried.

She paying all rates, taxes, charges, assessments and impositions whatsoever charged assessed or imposed upon the said dwellinghouse and premises or any part thereof. And upon trust to pay to or otherwise permit and suffer the said Maria Robinson to receive the rents, interests, dividends and income which shall arise from my said other real and personal estates or the stocks, funds and securities whereon any part of my Estate and Effects may be invested as hereinafter is mentioned for so long as she shall continue unmarried.

Provided nevertheless and my Will is and I do direct and declare that in case the said Maria Robinson shall neglect or decline for the space of twelve calendar months to reside in my said dwellinghouse at Endcliffe aforesaid then and in such case that the trusts relating to the use and enjoyment by her of the said dwellinghouse and premises....shall cease and be void and in lieu thereof an annuity of two hundred pounds shall be paid to her by the trustees or trustee for the time being under this my Will during the term of her material life or for such part thereof as she shall remain unmarried and which annuity I hereby charges upon my said real estate with the usual powers of distress and entry in case of the nonpayment thereof

And subject thereto and to the payment of the legacies hereinafter given and bequeathed by me I direct that they the said Wlliam Watson and Gilbert Wilkinson or the survivor of them...shall stand possessed of the said real leasehold and personal estates and effects In trust for the siad Gilbert Wilkinson, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns respectively.

And I give and bequeath the following legacies or sums of monies namely to:

each of my nephews, Oscar Wilkinson, Marshall Wilkinson and also to Vincent Wilkinson in case he shall attain the ages of twenty one years the legacy or sum of one thousand pounds and to each of my nieces, Mary Boynton and Louisa Barton and Edith Isabella Wilkinson the legacy or sum of one thousand pounds for their sole and separate use independent of any husband they may respectively have.

Treasurers of The Sheffield General Infirmary and The Deakin Institution - 100pds each
Treasurer of The Boys Charity School and The Girls Charity School, The Sheffield Public Hospital and Dispensay - 50pds each

Nevertheless I direct that the payment of all the aforesaid legacies for sums of money shall be postponed until after the death or marriage of the said Maria Robinson or until she shall neglect or decline to reside at Endcliffe House...

Jonathan Marshall late of Millsands, now of Bridgehoses, parish of Sheffield, steel merchant, and Joseph Read, late of Green Lane, now of Attercliffe, parish of Sheffield, refiner (surviving devisees in trust and executors under the will of Samuel Marshalll, late of Sheffield, ironmonger, decd, who was surviving devisee in trust and executor under the Will of John Winter, late of Sheffield, silversmith, decd) to Thomas Mycock, of Sheffield, cutler. 435 sq.yds. land on the north side of Church Lane which was leased to John Winter by the Rev. James Wilkinson as TT/68/8 above; Winter having demolished the present buildings and replaced them with 3 houses. Winter died 14 February 1792; his will 3 August 1787. For £813. 15s.

It seems probable that this is the uncle of Jonathon, brother of Jonathan's father, Richard.

Mrs. Bowring was nursing aide at Gaston Memorial Hospital in the Maternity Ward which she dearly loved.
