ObituaryJuly 1945Obituary of The death occurred on July 15 of Mr Ernest Joseph Higgins, on Onehunga, an esteemed life long resident of that town and a parishioner of the Church of the Assumption.
Born in 1868 of Irish parents who settled in Onehunga on their arrival by the 'Oriental Queen' in 1849, Mr Higgins was throughout his life associated with all activities of the Church. He attended the local parish school, whichin those days was conducted by Mr Timothy Honan, and as a small boy remembered Father Walter McDonald who in the days of early Onehunga had endeared himself to Catholics and non Catholics alike. Mr Higgins was an altar boy when Monsignor Paul was parish priest. Possessed of a splendid voice he was prominent in church choirs, and was always associated with St Patrick's Day celebrations.
Mr Higgins displayed great interest in the Hibernian Society. He was at the time of his death the oldest Hibernian living in the Auckland district, having been a member for over 50 years. During this time he did much to foster the interests of the lodge and was the holder of every office connected with it.
Mr Higgins took a leading part, too in affairs outside the church. He was always in popular demand at musical entertainments and town concerts, being a member of the Onehunga Borough Council for eight years he did much to secure the advancement of the town. As chairman of the Jellicoe Park Committee he worked enthusiastically in providing that amenity for future Onehunga.
He died in his 78th year after having given a lifetime of usefulness to Catholic affairs and to the progress of the town of his birth.
Mrs Higgins who was closely associated with her husband in parish matters predeceased her husband twelve months ago.
Mr Higgins is survived by one son, Mr E.C. Higgins of Karori, Wellington, and three daughters, Miss Madge Higgins, Mrs R.A. Dodd and Miss Gwenda Higgins all of Onehunga. There are three grandchildren.
Requiem Mass was offered at the Church of the Assumption on July 17. The celebrant was Monsignor Cahill V.G., assisted by Father McGivern. RIP.1
