Milit-Beg*
1943
He began military service in 1943 From The NZ Roll of Honour 1845-1995 page 185 -
Brennan, Trooper Eric John MM 1944, 1939 - 1945 Star, Italy Star, 1939-45 War Medal, NZ War Service Medal. Born Kakahi 22 June 1911. Military Service: 18 NZ Armoured Regiment, NZ Armoured Corps. Citation for the MM: 'On 18 December 1943 Trooper Brennan drove his tank in the advance on Arielli, Italy, under heavy shell and mortar fire. When his tank reached the outskirts of the village it was hit five times with armour piercing shells and although the shells did not pierce the armour the tank was seriously disabled, having the traversing gear damaged and the gun put out of action. A shell struck the cupola ring and decapitated the commander, and as it appeared the tank might burst into flames the crew abandoned it. After reaching comparative safety at some 1000 yards distance it was decided that the tank was not aflame and Trooper Brennan voluntarily returned to it under shell, mortar and small arms fire, managed with difficulty to start it and drove it back out of action. He then went forward into the same fire on foot and assisted a wounded comrade back. His gallant action under very heavy fire not only helped to save the life of a wounded man but prevented the loss of valuable equipment and documents which otherwise might have fallen into enemy hands.' Obituary
31 July 1937
Obituary of MAN SHOT.
ONEHUNGA INCIDENT. HAPPENING 37 YEARS AGO. VICTIM'S DEATH THIS WEEK.
Onehunga was abruptly awakened from its tranquillity. It was one of the most startling incidents in the peaceful serenity of that suburb. A shot-gun was fired from a house at a resident walking along the road. The man fell to the pavement with his head and chest riddled with shot. The police had the greatest difficulty in bringing the offender to justice- All this happened, not to-day, but 37 years ago. It is the death of one of Onehunga's most respected identities, Mr. James Brennan, which recalls the sensation from its place in haltforgotten memory, for it was he at whom the shots were fired. Mr. Brennan, who died on Thursday, aged 88, was buried tbis morning.
He was born in Ireland and came out to New Zealand before most of the present generation was born, arriving over 60 years ago. On Sunday, March 11, 1900, Mr. Brennan was walking along the road to his home near the Te Papapa railway station, returning from, morning Mass at the Roman Catholic Church. When he was passing a house at the corner of Arthur and Victoria Streets shots rang out. Mr. Brennan staggered and fell, his neck and face streaming with blood.
Story Told in Court It was not until April 4 of the same year that the full story was told, when James Donaghy, the resident of the house on the corner, was charged in the Supreme Court with attempted murder. He was found not guilty on a plea of insanity, and was committed to the mental hospital.
And this is the story, as it appeared in the "Star" of March 12: Donaghy who was standing in the doorway of his house, fired at Mr. Brennan with a double-barrelled fowling piece, loaded with No. 4 shot. The pellets entered Brennan's neck and the left side of his face. A young man named Alfred Goldsbury coming along the road, found Brennan with his neck and face covered with blood. Dr. Erson advised Brennan's removal to the hospital. A young woman named Nixon, living in Victoria Street, heard the report of the gun, and on looking up she saw Brennan throw up his hands and fall down. At the same time she saw smoke issuing from the muzzle of the gun that Donaghy held in his hands. Brennan stated that he had given Donaghy no provocation, and had never spoken to him.
Questioning of Donaghy The next step was the questioning of Donaghy; and that was where the trouble began. When Constable McNamara went to Donaghy's house he found that the latter had locked all the doors, drawn all the blinds, and had barricaded the back door. When the constable demanded admittance, the Star's report continued. Donaghy who was living by himself, shouted out that he would shoot any man who opened the door. Constable McNamara. with the aid of four men. Messrs. Dore, Walker, Williams and Page, then burst open the front door and entered. They found Donaghy standing in the front passage, gun in hand, and he again threatened to shoot the first man who came in. But the constable used guile. asked a young man. named Allen, who was employed at the Onehunga branch of the National Bank, to go round to -the back of the house and enter by a back window. Allen did so and gained admittance unnoticed by Donaghy. Donaghy had raised his gun and was just about to fire at the men in front of him when Allen, coming in at exactly the right moment, pluckily stepped in behind him and seized his arm. Confusion ensued, and in the struggle when the muzzle of the gun was forced in the other direction Constable McNamara rushed in nnd with the Resistance of others secured the man. Just as this was done, Donaghy pulled the trigger. But all the shots went wide and entered the floor.
Delusions of Donaghy It is said that Donaghy had been under the impression that people wanted to rob him, and that his conduct had been somewhat eccentric for some time, the report continues. Donaghy was removed to the police station, and appeared on March 12 in the Police Court before Dr. W. R. Erson, J.P. The sequel is known. Mr. Brennan recovered from the shock and suffered no ill-effects afterwards. Since then he had been connected intimately with the Onehunga district, and, indeed, was one of its old identities. Though aged 88 years, his hair was its natural colour, and he had had scarcely a day's illness in his life. Some 18 months ago he suffered a stroke. A second stroke caused his death. At the time of the shooting Mr. Brennan was in the employ of the Railway Department, in whose service he remained for many years. In his time he had worked all over the North Island. For some years he had been living at Te Papapa. He is survived by his two sons, Messrs. A. J. and F. M. Brennan. Auckland Star, 31 July 1937, page 10.
