states that Ralph Rishton, the eldest son, purchased Dunkenhalgh from John
Rishton in 1556. "Ralph is remarkable for his matrimonial adventures. He
married first, circa 1531, Ellen dau of Richard Towneley of Royle. This was a
child marriage, but they are said to have lived together as man and wife.
Ellen appears to have become imbecile, and died circa 1555. (Ralph was
formally divorced from Ellen, and it seems probable that the marriage had never
been consummated.) but about 10 years before that Ralph 'married at Clitheroe
Church, Elizabeth, dau of Nicholas Parker of Horrockford near Clitheroe.
There was some doub as to the validity of this marriage, and a good deal of
litigation ensued. Doubts were thrown on the legitimacy of the children, but
there is good reason to maintain that their legitimacy was established, as well
as the regularity of the marriage. For (i) when Grace the dau of Henry
Rishton of Dunkenhalgh by his wife Ellen Butler was married to Roger the son of
Ralph Rishton by his wife Elizabeth Parker, Roger was described as son and heir
of Ralph...(iv) Elizabeth Rishton (nee Parker) claimed dower as Ralph's widow
in 1571 (information of Colonel Parker' Meanwhile about 1560 Ralph married
Anne dau of Sir James Stanley of Cross Hall by Anne his wife (d. 1566), sister
of Sir Percival Hart of Lullingston, co. Kent.
