The Book of McKee lists Anabel as a widow with three sons who assist Robert the Bruce and are given property in Kirkcudbright; sons are M'Kie, M'Clurg, and Muiredach from her several husbands, according to History of the House and Clan of Mackay, pg 36 - so Muiredach could have been by a husband of that name - the sons could have been called by the surnames of their fathers.
History of the Lands and their Owners in Galloway, by P.H. M'Kerlie FHL 941.49 H2m 1994 states that Murdoch, the second son was given the portion called Comloddan. It also states that the name of Murdoch was in the reion and found in the Ragman Roll. The first as Johan Murthoc, del counte de Dumfres. He swore to serve King Edward I against their own country. The words "del Counte de Dumfres" mean the Stewartry as it now is.
On Page 411 the text states that Robert the Bruce granted to Gilberti fil Nigelli, a charter of terram (tertiam?) partem terre de Cameleden. He was brother to John, who obtained Craigcaffie, parish of Lochryan, as the next entry is "Johannis, fil Nigelli et Carricke, terre de Kellechaffe in Gallovidia." The text then says "The surname became Neilson. The name is to be found in Scandinavia. The information makes it rather conflicting, but there can be no doubt that the whole of the land became the portion assigned to Murdoch, second son of the widow mentioned under Larg." The editors have considered that his name is Gilbert, since he was given the charter of Cameleden. It is especially interesting that it states Gilbert is the son of Neil. The editors have assumed the M'Kie husband was Neil, since brother John named his son Neil. However, it is equally possible that the Murdoch or the M'Lurg husbands were named Neil.
[1803] Scottish Church Records - chr of Christine; at chr of Isobella, mother is listed as Isobell Mackay
