History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, Vol 4, p 280 defines a contract 26 Jul 1631 between John Crichton of Larg and Gilbert Brown of Bagbie and a disposition of Larg ( Hinton, parish of Anwoth, and other lands) to William, his second son.
Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court Deeds 1623-1675 at Dumfries Archives, Scotland, October 2001: "2183 Obligation (12 July 1675) by David Dumbar of Baldone, narrating a Bond to him (of the date hereof) by Richard Broune, lawful son to the deceased Gilbert Broune of Bakbie, and Agnes McKie, his spouse, for L5000 Scots paable at Martinmas next, with L1000 of penalty, promising that he shall not use execution against the said spouses for payment thereof, but that it shall be lawful for him to "deduce comprysing" against the said Agnes, Patrick, and John McKeis, her brothers for further security...At Kirkcudbright 18 Aug 1655; witnesses Gilbert Broune in Kempiltoun, Gavin Broune, brother to the said Richard..."
History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, FHL 941.49 H2m v. 1, p 385 gives mg date and names. V 5, p 268-9 says "He [Gilbert] succeeded in 1616 to Bagbie, and took part in the civil war. He married in 1619, Margaret Dunbar,...and had issue - Gavin, William, Helen...In 1640 he was in Threve Castle under Lord Nithsdale and...was thrown into prison in violation of the articules of capitulation...His wife, Margaret Dunbar, was ordered to be apprehended and 'ut in suir ward,' for using his crop on Nuntone for the subsistence of her family...' In 1642, Gilbert Brown made over nearly all his land...to his second son William, who had conformed to the covenant. After the restoration, Gilbert endeavoured to get a modification of this settlement, but was foiled by his son William. He, however recovered Kempleton...and appears as one of the commission named to assess the fines upon the covenanters. He seems to have died in 1666."
