"The Book of McKee," pg 315. Thomas was very young when his father and uncle were killed in 1517. The family owned Bighouse in Strathnaver, but King James VI/ I gave Bighouse to Angus Murray probably at the death of Thomas' father and uncle; it was eventually taken back by a cousin Hugh and given to his brother William in 1592.
Thomas' great grandfather Ian (Aberach) was fostered in Lochaber, Kirkcudbright, with his maternal MacDonald relatives. Ian's son, William Du, only had two sons who were both killed at Loch Salsie in 1517, leaving Thomas as the eldest surviving male heir of Ian Aberach. Because of the danger these young boys were under, they probably travelled back to Kirkcudbright for safety reasons. In addition, Kirkcudbright was a major holding of the Murray family, and Thomas' mother was a Murray. We assume that Thomas married a Kirkcudbright cousin.
The Bighouse battle had been ongoing since way before Angus Dow, 2nd great grandfather of Thomas. In fact, Angus Dow was killed trying to secure Bighouse from the Murrays in 1433 at Drumnacoup, where 3000 men died, with only 9 surviving. Angus Dow died after the battle from a Murray arrow as he was checking the bodies on the field.
This is the only Scotland Mackay branch with a surviving Thomas during the years before 1580, and yet the name Thomas Mackay was carried forward in all generations in Kirkcudbright and also in Ireland after that time. There was a strong tradition to name children after grandparents and parents. The name Thomas came from his maternal grandfather, Thomas Murray.
