History of the Lands and their Owners in Galloway 941.49 H2m V 4, pg 450 states "Without his father's knowledge he started for Ireland in February 1730, on a visit to Sir Robert Adair. After a time he wished to leave, when some one (we have the name) to prevent his leaving, gave some opium to make him sleep over the time for starting, but by mistake too much, and he never awoke in this world."
Also, he and his brother-in-law Sir Alexander Maxwell were carrying on a law plea, and contracted much debt. When his wife died, the proceedings were stopped.
