Blackcastle Manuscript pg 39 states: "31. John Sinclair of Dun was third son of John, third earl of Caithness by Elizabeth daughter of William Sutherland of Duffus. John Sinclair of Dun got a Charter of Confirmation to the Lands of Scarmclett and others...8th October 1592. Reg. Mag. Sig. Lib. xxxviii et Douglas and Wood's Peerage Vol . 1 p. 296. And Crawford's Peerage p. 421."
p 117 states he was Laird of Dun
FHL Caithness Family History 941.13 D2h pg 107-114 treats the parentage of John, according to several sources. Blackcastle was probably erroneous in stating that John was son of John, Third Earl of Caithness -- he was probably a grandson, son of natural son, David.
