FHL "The Mackays of Strathnaver," pg 305a; "The Book of McKee," pg 315 - states he fought at Drum nan Coup, 1433; many attempts were made on his life, and he spent many nights in the rocky fastness near Castle Varrich called to this day John of Lochaber's bed;
John (Ian) was fostered by his maternal relatives in Lochaber [Kirkcudbright]. A tradition regarding the meeting between father and son on the evening of Drumnancoup states that Ian arrived at Tongue, and his father determined to test his spirit. "He ordered food to be spread for his son in a room where a large boar-hound was placed. The fierce brute, looking upon the food as under its charge, prepared to show fight as soon as the Aberach entered; but Ian nothing daunted drew his dirk, closed with the hound, and soon dispatched it. The father delighted with his son's intrepidity exclaimed, 'Dhearbh thu fuil do chridhe, (you have proved the blood of your heart)."
