[9276] FHL Caithness Family History 941.13 D2h pg 47 states that William Sinclair married secondly, in 1647, Jean, daughter of John Cunningham of Geise and Brownhill, and relict of Alexander Sinclair of Latheron. John Cunningham had for his second wife Elizabeth, aunt of William Sinclair of Rattar, but it is thought that his daughter jean was not Rattar's cousin-german, but was the daughter of John Cunningham by his first marriage. Jean Cunningham was long famous in the locality under the name of "Jeanag of Rattar."

FHL "The Mackays of Strathnaver," pg 305a; was given Bighouse by his brother Hugh in 1592 (it had formerly belonged to Thomas Mackay of Aberach/Strathnaver, but had been taken by Angus Murray under a grant from James VI/James I about 1580-90. In 1587 he went in to throw the Murrays of Spenziedale out of the BigHouse. 18 Jul 1597 Murray deeded it over - confirmed 18 Dec 1598.
Book of McKee, p 310 tells that young Huistean and his brother William Mackay, afterwards of Big House, were made wards of George, 4th Earl of Caithness, and resided with him at Girnigo.
Blackcastle Manuscript p 298 states: Contract and Alienation and Extract thereof betwixt Rory Murray of Bighouse and Rory Mackenzie of Ardfallie as Factor and Burdentaker for William Mackay of Ballankyle and Isobel McKenzie his spouse, Whereby the said Rory Murray Dispones to the said William Mackay the lands of Bighouse Forss and Trantils, dated the 18th of July 1597 and registered in the book of Session 17th July 1602."
P 103 states: "William Mackay of Bighouse had a Charter of Confirmation under the Great Seal of King James VI, granted 'Willelmo Mackay de Balnakill et Isabella Mckenzie suo spousae' of the lands of Bighouse, Frontaillis, Forsies and others dated 18th December 1598 and on which sasine passed in their favour 7th May 1599."
Book of Mackay pg 302-3 states: He [William] led the Mackays on La Tom Fraoich, fighting the Sutherlands from morning till nightfall, and next morning at day-break, being joined by the Gunns, practically exterminated a strong force of Sinclairs that was advancing in concert with the Sutherlands...The Murrays who got possession of the lands of Strathhalladale in 1430--lands which the Mackays held at that time by charter from the Lord of the Isles--he harried so mercilessly that they had to abandon the strath altogether. On the 14th September, 1592, Rory Murray of Bighouse complained to the Privy Council:
'That upon the 20th September 1587, William Mackay 'with certan brokin hieland men, to the noumer of personis or thairby,' came to the lands of Bighouse or Strathhalladale and 'ejected the said complenaris wyffe and bairnis furth of the said houssis, Quhairthrou thay being strangearis in that cuntrey...at last miserablie deit throu hunger in the mountane.' Further, the said William Mackay 'hes continuallie sensyne withhaldin and possest the said complenaris hous and rowme, and hes banist himself the cuntry swa that he dar nocht repair thairunto for feir of his lyffe."
