[6196] Record of the House of Kirkcudbright, by the late John McClellan, FHL 941.49 H2ma, pp 30-32 states: "Sir Thomas M'Clellan of Bomby...in 1570, sold the Kirk of St. Andrew, then disused, and also the Kirk of the Grey friars...to the Burgh of Kirkcudbright...He also built the modern castle of Kirkcudbright, which was finished in 1583. He died in 1597. Above the family vault there is to him and his second wife, Grissel Maxwell (daughter of John, Lord Herries...) a monument...Margaret M'Clellan, daughter of Sir Thomas M'Clellan of Bomby, ____ in 156_, married James Johnstone, ancestor of the Marquis of Annandale...By Grissel Maxwell he had three sons--first, Sir Robert M'Clellan...second, William M'Clellan...and third, John M'Clellan..."
