The Book of Mackay, pg. 317; F.S.A.S.; married in 1799 Isabella Curor, Ettrickbank; purchased Blackcastle, near Edinburgh, 1823.
Blackcastle, pg 132-4 states: "Alexander Mackay of Blackcastle, County of Edinburgh fourth son of John Mackay of Clyth, was born 13th November 1771 and bred to business a Bookseller and afterwards became a Banker in Edinburgh. In 1797, when he saw the disorder and excesses to which the French Revolution led the anarchy and bloodshed that followed, [feeling that]...like horrors were apparently about to be inflicted on his own country, he joined...to support the British Constitution...He enrolled himself ...in a Volunteer Corps..composed principally of Gentlemen connected with the University of Edinburgh...He was Preses of the Society of Booksellers in 1822 when His Majesty King George IV visited Scotland, on which occasion he had the honor of appearing before His Majesty in his official capacity...And in 1823 he acquired from Colonel William Wauchope of Niddrie Marischall the Lands and Estate of Blackcastle and Cakemuir, with the Toweer, Fortalice and Manor Place of the same in the County of Edinburgh, and had Sasine thereon to himself in liferent, and to John Alexander Mackay his only son in fee dated 8th December 1823...He was admitted Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1823."
P 132a gives history of Blackcastle as follows: It is very remarkable that this property of Blackcastle described in the old Title Deeds as forming part of the Lordship of Crichton should have belonged to a progenitor of the present proprietor, in the female line, so early as six centuries ago. This will appear from the following facts and documents:
William de Crichton designed 'Dominus De Crichton' in a Charter of Maldwin, Earl of Lennox in 1240, was then proprietor of these Lands, and from him was descended William Lord Crichton High Chancellor of Scotland in 1437-54. This Lord Crichton's eldest daughter Elizabeth, married Alexander, first Earl of Huntly and had a Charter 1449-50. The eldest son of this marriage was George, second Earl of Huntly, who married the Princes Annabella, daughter of King James I and had a Charter to himself and Annabella his wife, sister-german to the King dated 10th March 1459-60. They had issue Alexander, third Earl of Huntly, and Adam, Lord of Aboyne, who marrying Elizabeth Countess of Sutherland in her right became Earl of Sutherland. The great grandson of this marriage was Alexander, eleventh Earl of Sutherland, who married Lady Jean, daughter of George, Fourth Earl of Huntly, Lord High Chancellor of Scotland in 1546, and had issue. This Lady had been the wife of James, Fourth Earl of Bothwell, Lord of Crichton, but the marriage was annulled 7th May 1567 to make way for his marriage with Queen Mary. Lady Jean, eldest daughter of Alexander Earl of Sutherland by this Lady Jean, formerly Countess of Bothwell and Lady Crichton, was married in 1589 to Hugh Mackay of Farr and Strathnaver and had issue, Donald Lord Reay and John Mackay of Strathy who married in 1619 Anna, daughter of Sir James Sinclair of Murkle, brother-german to George, Fifth Earl of Caithness and of which marriage the present proprietor Alexander Mackay of Blackcastle is a lineal male descendant..."
