Book of McKee, pg 119, excerpted from "David McKee and Descendants"
"The Martin Family History and Descendants" states: [David's father] "was a colonel on a ship under King William...At Belfast Harbor, a chain had been stretched across the channel to prevent enemy ships from entering the harbor. It was then that Colonel McKee backed off, and took time to build a platform over the front of the ship. On the platform, he installed a blacksmith with a forge and anvil. Then going back to the harbor entrance, they took up the chain with grappling hooks, and cut it on the anvil. That allowed them to enter the harbor and take Belfast. The King was so pleased that he knighted him, and gave him a tract of land, Armaugh County..." Parker-McKee 929.273 p 226a
David was born in Scotland, and probably moved to Ireland during the religious wars. In a letter written by Thomas McKee to his daughter, Matilda Armstrong, he says that David lived to be 106 years old. David's wife was Prudy McCleary.
The Book of McKee (pg 62) gives David's death in 1795 at "an advanced age."
Pg 148 quotes his headstone at Versailles Cemetery, McKeesport, Pa.:
"David McKee died October 11, 1795, aged 85 years 1710-1795"
P. 62 states: "David McKee removed to the distant frontier where, by the courtesy of Queen Alliquippa, he established himself at the mouth of the Youghiogheny...Western Pennsylvania was not consiidered a desirable place...nor was it tolerably secure from Indian ravages until after Col. Bouquet's victory at Bushy Run in 1763. It is a well-established fact that McKee appeared on the Monongahela before the cessation of hostilities; that he was well received by Queen Alliquippa, and settled at the mouth of the Youghiogheny by her permission, and that in 1769 the colonial government confirmed to him the exclusive right of ferriage over the two rivers at their confluence. April 3, 1769, the colonial landoffice was oened for the sale of lands acquired by the Indian treaties at the close of Pontiac war, and wrrant No. 1103 was granted to David McKee for the survey of a tract of land...three hundred and six acres three roods and twenty perches."
