FHL "The Mackays of Strathnaver," pg 305a; The Book of McKee pg 295 quotes Black Castle Manuscript that distinctly states that John was 2nd son; John was alive in 1501, and Iye acted as chieftain some years before that date; on 30 Sep 1511 Iye Roy and son John purchased lands of Melness and Hope from Donald McCorrichie, Farquhar's heir; joined in bond of friendship with Adam Gordon Earl of Sutherland 31 Jul 1517; Temple dates from Ordinance Index
Book of McKee pg 343 (quoting Pinkerton's History of Scotland, vol. 2, p. 59) says that Odo O'Donnel sent Aeneas Mac Dowal from the town of Drumangeil to the court of Scotland, with orders to acquaint the king [James] of his father's death, and by virtue of the league, to require a supply of 4,000 men, under the conduct of John the son of Alexander MacKeane."
Book of McKee, pg 299, states that 8 Aug 1511 King James IV provided a precept of legitimation for Iye Roy's 2 surviving sons John and Donald
Sir Robert Gordon (quoted in Book of McKee pg 342) states: "Iye Mackay was twice married...second, having had two natural sons, John and Donald, by one whom [he] designs 'a woman of the western isles,' he married her in order to legitimate his sons; and afterwards obtained from the king, a precept of legitimation in their favour,..."
Book of McKee pg 343 refers to Iye Roy as Alexander, quoting Pinkerton's History of Scotland, vol. 2, p. 59 and refers to Douglas' Peerage 569. (footnote) "James [King] had also taken from Crawford some lands in the isles, and assigned them to Mackay." In the king's charter it states: "James, &c. Know, because we have clearly examined and understood, that the late Odomus M'Ky alias Y___ M'Ky [we know him as Iye Roy], father of our much beloved Donald M'Ky of Strathnaverne..."
Blackcastle Manuscript p 240 is verbatim transcript of Instrument upon Precept for Douglas of Pittendriech Chamberlain of Moray, for paying to Y McKy of Strathnaver L20 Scots per annum. Datd 2d April 1497. Precept dated 18th July 1496. Also a Charter 1499 to "Odo Makky of Strathnaver of the Lands of Far Armadale &c."
Blackcastle Manuscript pg 24 tells of Iye Roy's valiant service to the King. "The King, in consideration of his faithful services granted a Charter under the Great Seal 'Odoni alias Y Makky de Strathnavern et heredibus....He was in frequent commujnication with His Majesty as appears by the Lord High Treasurer's Books in which there is an entry on the 1st March and again on the 13 May, 1501, of sum s of money paid to men who had brought writings &c. 'to the King from Y Maky' - 'paid by the King's command'. Lord High Treasurer's Books."
