1. Charles Anderson,1 2 3 4 5 6 son of Unknown and Unknown, was born on 1 Jan 1791 in SC, died about 1852 about age 61, and was buried about 1852 in Shelby Gap, Ky..
General Notes: Abt. 1791
We have not been able to find irrefutable evidence as to birth place of Charles Anderson. The recollection of Henry Anderson as recorded in an interview in 1927 was that his Grandfather, Charles, was from England. The 1850 Census shows that Charles Anderson was from 'SC'. Phyllis (Hudson) Burwiz, a descendant of Isabella, daughter of Charles and Sarah Moore indicates that Isabella was born in South Carollina. There were several Charles Anderson's in South Carolina in the early 1800's. It is only conjecture that Charles or his father may have moved from England or South Carolina, or Virginia or may have lived in all locations. Family stories were that he or his father was from Scotland. The census records and land records indicate that there was only one Charles Anderson in Pike/Floyd County, Ky during the early 1800's.
If anyone has more details or proof of the early life of Charles Anderson, please contact the author of this document, John Anderson, email:john@johnlanderson.com.
1792 Kentucky became a state
1799 Floyd County Kentucky was formed from Fleming, Montgomery and Mason Counties.
1786 Russell County, Virginia was formed from Washington County, Virginia in
1786. Unfortunately the number one marriage book for Russell County has been missing for many years. If it should ever be located many loose ends for lots of genealogists could most likely be tied up.
1802 Spartanburg County, South Carolina census shows a Charles Anderson, Thomas Anderson, Enoch, James, Joel, and William Moore. No proof of a connection to our Charles Anderson or his father. It may be just a coincident that a Moore and Anderson family were living in the same vicinity. If anyone has any data to validate our Charles Anderson to SC, please send the data to the site author.

Abt. 1815 Charles and Elizabeth left Russell County, Virginia and moved to Kentucky where they settled at the mouth of Sycamore Fork, 7 miles from Elkhorn Creek in what was then Floyd County, Kentucky. Statement made 29-Jul-1927 by Henry Anderson the son of Henry and Matilda (Colley) Anderson...."According to what my father told me, his father, Charles Anderson, came from England and settled at the mouth of Sycamore Fork of Elkhorn Creek in Pike County, Kentucky. He married a Moore after arriving in America, and they had one child, my father Charles. He later married Hannah Osborne and had several children. (source: PIONEER RECOLLECTIONS by Elihu Jasper & Hetty Swindall Sutherland p. 3) There appears to be some confusion with this interview. Charles H. was not the only child from Charles, Sr. first marriage. The 1830, 1840,1850 Census shows a family size that reconcils with family records. Also, a deed in 1879 was signed by Charles Jr. and his brother Hiram from Charles's first marriage. The deed was also signed by children of Charles, Sr. second marriage.
1816 Mary A. Anderson born Mary married Heny J. Clay, a neighbor in 1838. The marriage is recorded in the Pike County marriage records and the 1850 census shows Henry's wife as Mary. 1817 John Anderson born 1820

He lived pretty close where Jerry Osborne lived on Elkhorn between Shelby Gap and Osborn Gap. Grandfather Anderson was a lot older than his second wife...(source: PIONEER RECOLLECTIONS by Elihu Jasper & Hetty Swindall Sutherland p. 2) A clarification is that the Charles Anderson farm was sold to "Huffy" John W. Vanover in 1879 by the heirs of Charles Anderson. (see deel listed below) At some time after Charles and Hannah married they moved to her brothers Jimmy and Jerry Osborne's place between Shelby Gap, Kentucky and Osborne Gap, Dickenson County Virginia. 1848 Pike County, Kentucky Deed bk C, p 172: This indenture made and entered into the 21 of March in the year of our lord 1848 between Charles Anderson of the first part of the County of Pike and state of Kentucky and Mitchell Clay county ___aforesaid Witneseth the the said Charles Anderson hath this day sold unto the said Mitchell Clay a certain tract and parcel of land fifty acres __ ____ being in the County of Pike and state of Kentucky for and in consideration of the sum of Fifty dollars in hand paid the receipt required and hereby acknowledged that that Charles Anderson has granted bargained and sold and by their ____doth part bargain and sell to the Clay said tract and parcel of land lying and being in the County of Pike on the left hand fork of Sycamore Creek a branch of Elkhorn Creek and bounded as followeth....the rest is not almost faded completely away)

The place of birth, naming the State, Territory, or County is :S'C. Phyllis (Hudson) Burwiz, a descendant of Isabella daughter of Charles and Sarah Moore indicates that Isabella was born in South Carollina.

Notes for Hannah Osborne: Hannah was the widow of John White by whom she has a daughter Abigail. After the death of Charles, Hannah married a 3rd time to George Powell, 27 Oct 1853 and they had two sons: Geroge and William. They had children from both their previous marriages living with them as well. She is listed as being born in Mar-1822 and living in the house of her son George Powell at the time of the 1900 Pike County, Ky Census. Carol Schmidt says Hannah is buried in the Anderson Cemetery, Big Shelby Creek, near Shelby Gap. The two chimney's to the old house Hannah and Charles raised their children stands just below the cemetery. It is possible that Charles is buried in this cemetery also. There is one headstone (lettered with metal stickers) which reads _h_ _ l _ _. Most other older stones are unmarked. However, Hannah's is readable. Also on this cemetery are Jeff Anderson (possibly Jepetha_, Aaron and Alifair Anderson; and possibly Leonard Anderson, son of Shadrick."
1879 On September 24, 1879 the heirs sold the Elkhorn Creek land to John W. Vanover for $350 dollars . It has been know ever since as the "Huffy" John Vanover place and is located on Elkhorn Creek between Shelby Gap and Hylton and lies at the base of Kelly Mountain Road. 1879 This deed of sale reads as follows: "This deed made and entered into 24 September,1879, by and between Charles Anderson, Jr., Hiram Anderson, Shadrick Anderson, Jeptha Anderson, Sylvester Anderson, Tabitha Anderson Moore, her husband, Solomon Moore, for and in considration of parties of the first part 350 dollars, do convey to parties of the second part, John W. Notes for Charles H. Anderson:
After Charles marriage to Betsy, they moved to Fuller Hill near Sandlick, Virginia. Charles and Tilda bought 75 acres of land (valued at $1000) on the left-hand fork of the Sandlick River, Dickenson County, Virginia, from Tom Davis who was an agent for the Warders. The area where they lived is still known as Tilda Branch and Tilda Bottoms. When Tom Duty first cleared this land (before Charles and Tilda bought it), he found a salt spring near the mouth of Lick Creek and he tried and failed to stop it up with a locast log. During the Civil War people people would come to this spring to boil the brine down for the salt. The following is a transcription of a letter typed by Bill Anderson of Birchleaf (Sand Lick), VA. responding to a Mrs. Hudson who had inquired about the Charles Anderson family in 1984. Transcription is by John Lee Anderson. Mrs. Hudson, My sister-in-law Betty Anderson referred your letter to me. I am glad to help you in any way I can. My great-grandfather George W. Anderson came to what is now Dickenson County from Copper Creek, which was and still is in Russell County, VA. He married the daughter of Charles and Matilda Colley Anderson, who already lived at Sand Lick. Charles and Matilda live near the mouth of Matilda Anderson Branch, which was named for her. They have many descendants here and elsewhere. My great-grandparents, George and Mary were no relations to each other as far as I can determine.Charles Anderson's second wife Matilda Colley (my great-great grandparents) was the daughter of the first settler in what is now Dickenson County. He was Richard "Fighting Dick" Colley and married Crissie Counts. They came here to Birchleaf (Sand Lick) about 1810. Many legends and stories about Richard Colley were recorded by Judge E. J. Sutherland (deceased). But back to the Andersons. I had not heard Charles Anderson called. "Jr." but I did know that he was the son of Charles Anderson in Kentucky. I have found a number of Charles Andersons and they are easy to confuse, so I hope I don't get you mixed up. The enclosed sheet, enclosure # 1, is a statement made by Charles Anderson who lived in Clintwood, Va. I assume the only son he heard of his grandfather and first wife having was the Charles, Jr. in your letter that came here to Sandlick. I corresponded with a lady in Clintwood who says she is the daughter of Charles B. Anderson who made the statement in "enclosure # 1". I believe she as quite a lot of info. She is Stella Boyd, Rt.. 1, Box 197, Clintwood, Va. 24228. According to her, your Charles Anderson, Sr. father was also Charles Anderson.Enclosure No. 2 is a copy of the record from the family Bible of you Charles Anderson, Jr. who lived here. Your Charles Anderson's first wife was Elizabeth Ownens, daughter of Harden and Rebecca Ramey? Owens. There were married in 1839 in Pike County. I have a book with more on Harden Owens. Charles and Elizabeth's only known children, John and Nancy Anderson. Nancy married Issac Blair. I have no more on Nance.John Anderson B. 6 June, 1841 D. 6 March, 1921 on 11 Jan. 1865 married in Buchanan County, VA. Sarah "Sallie" Deel B. 10 March 1849 D. 24 Feb. 1907. ELIHU JASPER SUTHERLAND'S RECOLLECTIONS by Hetty Sutherland
Some Recollections of Henry Anderson as related to E. J. Sutherland, July 29,1927.I was born at Tilda Anderson Branch, above Sand Lick, October 16, 1856. My parents were Charles and Matilda Colley Anderson. My paternal grandfather, Charles Anderson, came from England, according to what my father told me, and settled at the mouth of Sycamore Fork of Elkhorn Creek in Pike County, Kentucky, about seven miles from Elkhorn City. He married a Miss Moore, after arriving in America. He was a farmer and a great hunter. His children were: Sylvester, lived on Shelby creek; Shad, died at Clintwood, Virginia, father of C. B. Anderson; Jeff, lived on Shelby Creek; Hiram, lived on or near Indian Creek, in Kentucky; John went west and was never heard of afterwards; Jess went west and was never heard of afterwards; Charles, my father lived on Sand Lick.I don't know the names of my aunts, but there were several. Father was born at Sycamore, and lived there until he married Betsey Owens, daughter of Hardin Owens, when he moved to Fuller Hill, near Sand Lick. They had two children: Nancy and John, before Betsey died. Nancy married Isaac Blair, but did not live long. Daddy then married my mother Matliday Colley, daughter of Richard and Chrisee Counts Colley. Their children were as follows: Sallie, Polly, Cynthia, Chrissie, Hazy, Henry, Lucinda, and David. David died at the age of 4 years. After his second marriage, Daddy moved down to the mouth of Tilda Anderson Branch, where they lived the rest of their lives and they were buried there. He bought the land from Tom Davis, the agent of the Warders. He cleared most of the land, but some of it had been cleared before he moved there. I have been told that Dr. John H. Duty's grandfather, Tom Duty, cleared the first land in the Tilda Bottom. He found a salt spring near the mouth of Lick Creek and tried to stop it with a locus glut, but failed. I remember that the people in the neighborhood got out of salt during the Civil War and they had to make brine at the salt spring. Lots of settlers from the South of the Mountain would come there to make brine salt. I remember the Moores coming very distinctly. They would make "Johnny cake" and divide with me, which I thought was the finest bread I ever ate.

The Ross Anderson family loved to tell stories to keep their history alive. All the stories had a factual basis but were sometimes embellished by the story teller to captivate their audience. Story telling is an art and the members of the Ross Anderso family were skillful at that art. These stories are published here to preserve this history with the understanding that the actual telling of the stories was far more entertaining than the written story:
THE TUTI FRUIT STORY By Betty Ruth Farmer When people died years ago they kept everything until it dry rotted. I remember looking in the two bottom dresser drawers at Anna Louise (then deceased) clothes. She had a little pair of black four button paten leather shoes; they called them "Roman Sandals". I wanted to wear then so bad but Mom wouldn't let me. She let me put cardboard in the bottom of my shoes because they had a hole in them and Dad worked and boarded in Virginia. He wouldn't be home until the weekend to half-sole them. I walked with a stiff foot so who people behind me wouldn't see the hole in my shoes. Something else she had that I wanted was a mesh and beaded pocked book. Sort of like an evening bag. I couldn't have it either but she had it full of money. I don't remember taking any but one time. I was running across the road to the store and Charles was hid under the house. Just as I was going in the door he yelled: "TUTI FRUIT - BETT - TUTI FRUITI", because I was going to buy blow gum (bubble gum). Of course, we got caught and got a big black razor stropping. An editorial note: Betty maintains she was only four years old and this whole thing was Charles' idea.
ANOTHER TALE ON POOL OLE CHARLESBy Betty Ruth FarmerOn Sunday afternoon we all sat outside in the kitchen chairs and leaned back against the shady side of the house. This was before lawn furniture. Charles was standing behind Mom and kept pulling her back. Mom and Dad had told him to stop several times. But he kept on and pulled Mom back on top of Him. He screamed "HEELLP- - -HEELLP / /: as loud as he could. He didn't get much sympathy and Dad told him to be quiet. Charles said, "You'd scream too, if an elephant was on top of you."
MY ROOSTER STORYBy Catherine AndersonWhen I first became a member of the Anderson family, I was so warmly welcomed and treated as a most welcome guest. Way back then, 50 years ago, there was no indoor plumbing, so we were all accustomed to the "outdoor facility". To get to this little building at the Anderson's, one had to go through the chicken lot. On my first visit to the said house. Mom went along with me to feed the chickens. Before either of us knew what was happening a large white rooster flew toward me, scaring the wits out of me. Mom grabbed her apron off and flagged the rooster away. Of course both Ced and Dad got a big kick out of telling of the incident. After several hours when "nature called" again, I was afraid to enter the lot alone, so Ced had to go along. Yes, just as I suspected, the big rooster resented me causing him to get a flagging, came at me again! With Ced's expert experience and marksmanship, one throw of a small rock, put the attacker on the run. By this time, I was ready to ask for an empty coffee can! By dusk, I was dreading the trip out back, as Ced was busy visiting with neighbors who had dropped in. Finally, I asked Dad if he would walk out to the lot with me. Dad most graciously agreed to do so. As we approached the lot, I was praying the chickens and rooster would all be asleep- but to our surprise, on my first step inside the lot, "Old Meanie", as I had named him, was waiting for me. With one quick grab, Dad had him in his hands, telling me to go on inside and relax, that the rooster would never hurt me again. When I came out the rooster's head was on one side of the lot, and his body lay flopping on the other side. To have been such a mean rooster to me, be sure was good eating in among Mom's delicious dumplings! Ced said he was sure glad he wouldn't have to go along with me, and check out the Sears catalog two or three time a day!
OLD FASHIONED SNOW CREAM By Charles Anderson As you know, this being a large family and it being winter time (January or February), everyone was accustomed to a liking for snow cream. We didn't have Ice cream, even If we had, we didn't have a refrigerator to put It In! I had just got back from a hard days work (selling liquor bottles in Potter Flats, one cent each, making 28 cents at the most per day). I had to carry them up there, about five miles, in a sack on my back. Arriving home, I discovered Betty and Doris sitting on their "hind-ends" playing their old hand-crank talking machine that they had worked out and liked to never got it home! They'd pushed it across the old bridge--a hard struggle since it got stuck between the slats in the bridge. The day they proudly brought this home, I hid In the background and watched them, a real sight to see, but I was ashamed somebody would see me if I helped them! Now on with the snow cream story: Betty and Doris were just dying for some snow cream and waited for me to make It. "You always beat it and made It creamier", they said. So I went to work and thought while I was getting it ready. I'd really make It good this time, I'll put some "nuts" it It! Of course when I gathered the snow I went straight to the barn where the-chickens roosted and gathered it, dipping deep down under the outside roost. I went back to the kitchen, added cocoa to the milk, vanilla and sugar and began to beat and add the snow. When it was looking creamy and inviting (I didn't even sample it, I wanted them to have it all). They ate the whole dishpan full and in the bottom they found the "NUTS"--black and white frozen chicken "drippings"!!! They never asked me again to make snow cream for them!!
THE AUNT PEARL STORYBy Betty Ruth FarmerWe had a well in out back yard and one fall it had gotten real low so Charles had to get Mom's wash water from the river. He had a mule named, "Old John". He had taken a wagon with tubs in it to fill from the river. We were supposed to listen for him and open the gates up at the barn so he wouldn't have to get off "Old John". Aunt Pear Francisco had come to Elkhorn to teach her first year and had stopped to visit with Mom. We were all visiting with her and forgot about Charles. He came storming in the back door of the fussing that we were resting while he was working and said: "You all are in here talking so loud you couldn't hear yourself fart,- - Hidy Pearl". He didn't see her until he had got his little speech over.
THE PERRY ANDERSON WAKE By John L. AndersonFuneral wakes in the homes of the deceased were traditional in the rural areas of Virginia and Kentucky. This was a tradition based on necessity since there were few funeral home and they usually located in the county seat. When Perry Anderson passed away in 1957, I was still in high school in Elkhorn City where Perry lived. Perry had been the city treasurer for many years. Being in that position he had reason to come in contact with every family in the town on a monthly basis when the water bills were due. In those days every one paid their bills in person rather than through the mall. Perry was well known to carry out his duties with all good conscience and compassion. He usually knew the personal circumstance of any delinquent account and would make recommendations to the City Council to extend or forgo the billing of the less fortunate. Perry always had time for a congenial conversation with folks as they come to pay their bills. He always loved a good story and was an excellent storyteller himself.Leslie, Perry's son, recognized the somber feeling of the group and broke the silence saying "Boys, you know Dad wouldn't want us to be setting here mooping at his funeral, you know how much he loved to tell stories, remember the one Dad used to tell about the time--". Leslie loosened up the group and we all remembered how great it was to have known "Uncle Perry". But only at Uncle Perry's funeral could the events of that night have taken place. There was a certain good Christian lady, who was a dear friend of the family and was also well known for her ability to keep up with the current events of the community and carry this news through out the town. During the Choir singing she was seated in such a position that she have a full view of the open casket. After the singing was over, which was a sign to go get something to eat and drink or otherwise be refreshed, the funeral director took advantage of the empty room to make any adjustments to the casket that may have been requested by the family. One such adjustment was to move the hands of the deceased to another position. The lady returned to her seat and without notice began to discuss some of the local news. Sometime later she came to an abrupt halt in her conversation, turned a freighted color of white, and screamed "LORD, HE'S MOVED!!, HE'S ALIVE!!". The excitement aroused the whole house and took quite a bit to calm the poor lady down. The incident gave us all to think that maybe that Uncle Perry had just given us his last laugh--he would have enjoyed that.
THE ROOSTER STORYBy C. R. AndersonSince I was the oldest of nine children, I saw a lot of love, discipline and togetherness expressed between father, mother and children. Dad taught school for the first 13 years of his married life; and as his family increased, he saw the need to change positions to be able to earn enough money to support them. Since he had a talent for wood-working and the compensation in that field surpassed the teaching profession, he took up the carpenter trade. This he continued to do for the remainder of his life. Mom now only gave her share of love, affection and attention, to us children, but also a double share to take care of Dad's absence from home, while off earning a living, when necessary. Large gardens with plenty of vegetables were a necessity for everyone living in that period of time in Pike County. So, It was only natural for Mom and Dad to have a very good crop every year. One year in particular stands out in my memory. Their love for their children prompted them to raise not only the necessary vegetables, but also some "luxury items" such as cantaloupes and watermelons. These melons were always planted in the center of a cornfield for protection from intruders. Dad, who was working away from home at the time, would on the weekends, check out the garden's progress and the chores each child was supposed to have done that week. On one such occasion he was pleased to find several cantaloupes beginning to ripen. He advised us children not to bother the melons until he returned home the following weekend, at which time, they would be ripe enough for eating, and sufficient enough for the whole family to enjoy. Returning home the following weekend. Dad found the ripe cantaloupes gone from the garden. Then the investigation began! Dad, in his wisdom, knew in his heart, those responsible-namely, Tommie, Helen and Charles. To confirm his suspicions, and to get a "confession" from the guilty person of persons, he devised a very concrete method of questioning. With Harry's help, one of the largest red roosters in the chicken lot was caught and placed under the big black tub used for all of the outdoor water heating. The tub was placed upside down over the rooster. The long tail feather of the said rooster was left protruding out from under the rim of the tub. Harry supposedly was holding the tub of the ground a little to keep the rooster from smothering. But unbeknown to the three culprits, also had a hold onto the tail feathers, with instructions from Dad, to give a jerk at the right time. Helen, offering to be the first, knowing of her innocence, meekly approached the tub, offered her hand to Dad, who gently circled it over the tub, lowering it till it touched the tub--No response from the rooster. At Dad's insistence, Charles hesitantly approached. Dad, in same manner, circled Charles hand above the tub, whereon at the jerk of the feathers, the rooster let out a deafen crow, loud enough to raise the tub, to, which Charles screamed: " TOMMIE DID TOO, TOMMIE DID TOO!! This was just one way of showing we children right from wrong and the penalties that had to be paid, or prizes won.
THE SQUIRREL HUNTING STORY By Ross Anderson at told to John Lee AndersonSquirrel hunting was a passion, necessity, and a sport in the hills of Virginia and Kentucky. My Grandfather, 'Pop' Ross Anderson was an expert squirrel hunter and a great storyteller. When I was in high school, we were eagerly awaiting the beginning of hunting season. The evening before the season opening, I was visiting Pop to get any advise and hopefully some of his hunting secrets. The following is the story he departed to me that night:Just a few years prior, Pop went squirrel hunting in the mountains behind Elkhorn City. He decided to go over into Eel Flats to an area that he was familiar with and knew that was sure to be loaded with squirrels. He had no more picked out a good spot among some large hickory trees that it began raining. The rain was so hard Pop knew he had to find shelter. There was a huge old oak tree that had a hollow crack in it. The tree was large enough that Pop could squeeze into the hollow of the tree. When the rain stopped, Pop decided to squeeze out of the crack in the tree to resume hunting. However, due to the rain, sweating and high humidity, he, with the wet clothing, had swollen and was unable to squeeze out of the tree. He tried to remain calm but knowing the probability that no one would be able to find him or assist him, he became more anguished. He said, his whole life flashed before his eyes. He remembered all of the wonderful times he had had with his great family. He remembered how thankful he was to have such a wonderful wife. He remembered all of the friends hehad. He remembered all of his accomplishments and the rewards of his early days as a teacher. Then, he said, he remembered that he had voted Republican one time and he felt so small he slide right out of that tree.

He was born May 10, 1889 in Pike County, Kentucky, and left the world June 12, 1964, making his stay on earth 75 years, 1 month and 2 days. He was the son of the late Joseph and Rachel Anderson. He married Annie Tackett, December 21, 1911 in Pike County, Kentucky, To Hiram and Annie 12 children, two infant boys preceded him in death. Left to mourn his loss is a lonely widow Annie Anderson, Ashcamp, Kentucky. Four sons, Edgar Anderson of Bowling Green, OH, Cecial Anderson, Maxwell Anderson, Nolen Anderson of MI. Six daughters, Elise Hudson of Chicage, IL, June Sanders of Ashcamp, KY, Viola Mullins, Esther Reece, Ethel Brock, Clara Gilliam all of MI. Two brothers, seven sisters and a host of friends. 52grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren all who loved him so much. He joined the Old Regular Baptist Church, second Saturday of October 1951, having his fellowship in the Hylton Church. September 1953, he was ordained a deacon, he served his brother sand sisters humbly and was loved by all. He would counsel hi children, brothers ans sisters to love one another, for with love and kindess we draw closer to God andlets all pray together. His loving and faithful wife helped and encouraged him in his work. In his hour of suffering with the dreadful disease cancer, she was always there, hiding her tears and heartbreak trying to help him bear his pain. His faith never faltered, he said he was ready to go, and I believe he is resting with God. Children you can go to your father, but he can't come to you. You are scattered over this land of his and sorrow but God is there too. Lets all go home to see him together. Written by his lonely widow Annie and children.
