He had one granddaughter, Angelique Dewberry, who preceded him in death.

Our Lord moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform. So it was God who saw fit, not man. Death does not come to a living soul, nor age to a loving heart. He laughed, lived, and lifted. He was a Christian, and was tolerant, radiant, and trustful. Those qualities reveal the possession of omnipotent power.

What a consoling thought for the highest hope of all is to come home, at last, to our Father in Heaven. So let us look up, even though it be through tears, to our God of Consolation and say, "Thy will be done." After all, if the road is hard and long, God gives us the strength to walk it; if the path is dark and benighted, it is His promise which lights the way.

Bro. Dewberry has gone from a world of troubles and conflict into the realms of indescribable and perpetual bliss. Paul wrote, I have a desire to depart and be with Christ which is far better.

Remember that God's Way is that man follow His redeemer in life, in death, and in Resurrection.

Byline: HERB JACOBS
Hartwell Menefee figures it's time to trade hats. The new label is traveling counselor for the Lawton Public Schools. The old one simply read `Coach'. It won't be easy to give up the old designation Menefee has spent 22 seasons at Lawton MacArthur, serving as high school boys' basketball coach the last 18 years. He also has worked with football and track. Any regrets? "No, there is no regret," Menefee said. "I think it's time, an opportunity for me to get out right now. I've been contemplating this the last seven, eight years. I just haven't made up my mind to do it. I look at it like this. I wanted to come back to Lawton and maybe I could have an input with some of the kids. That's really what coaching, to me, was all about. A lot of people have their ego trip. I'm not like that. I wanted to make a difference with the young people. "I accomplished some things. I think it's just time for me to move on and let somebody else have it." One of the rewards comes when former players stay in touch. "Oh yeah" Menefee said. "I usually have a gym full during the summer, kids from as far back as 1976. They come up and they want to play. "We reminisce about old times. I thank God for it because the kids, they do show you that respect. They might not understand it right now, but they always come back and say `you know you were right about this'. That's what makes me feel good." Menefee, now 51, has his own memories of his days at Lawton High. He excelled in football, basketball and baseball for the Wolverines. The basketball coach was Bob "Peewee" Williams. "He taught you discipline," Menefee said. "I thank God for him. I don't think my kids ... nowadays they wonder why I'm so hard on them." You have to be disciplined to be a good athlete. Coach Williams taught us that. Yes, he wanted us to shoot when we get in the paint. He didn't want us jacking up shots. He always wanted us to learn the offense. Nowadays kids just want to run up and down the floor and shoot. They watch a lot of TV." Menefee, who raises cattle on a 40-acre spread and is pastor of a church at Temple, also learned discipline from football Coach Bob Bodenhamer. "I tell a story about Coach Bodenhamer which I think really turned my life around," Menefee said with a laugh "Coach Bodenhamer had this deal about `one more time. We're going to run this play one more time'. It was a pass play. Everybody else had gone in. We kept running this play one more time. I was the one running 20 yards downfield because it was a pass play. He kept saying `one more time'. "I came back to the huddle and said `shoot'. He thought I said something else, so he sent everybody in and made me run. "I made my mind up right at that time, I said `I'm not going to let him know that I'm tired'. He ran me to death. I ran hard. I think that made me because I said `I'm not going to let Coach Bodenhamer know that I'm tired. I'm not going to let him know that I'm mad. I'm just going to run'. "This was my senior year. I always respected him for that. He was justified in trying to make me run, but I didn't say what he thought I said. "I told him about that one day when he came through here. I told him `I used to hate you'. We laughed about that. "Over the years, I had some good coaches ... good coaches that were concerned about me. If they weren't concerned about me, I know I never would have made it. They were concerned. They were looking out for my welfare." Menefee was rewarded by being named to the Tulsa World All-State football team and to Teen Magazine's High School All-America team. He went to New Mexico State for one semester, transferred back to Cameron Junior College for one year, then returned to the Las Cruces campus. He played professionally for two years as a defensive back with the New York Giants. Why did he leave? "They ask me to go on the taxi squad again, put me on waivers," Menefee said. "Cincinnati picked me up, but I just got tired of it. I went back to New Mexico State and started coaching as a football assistant down there." Menefee's basketball teams have been known for their fast breaking style on offense and a smothering pressure defense. About the only thing they didn't accomplish was winning a trip to the State tournament. "I was just talking to one of the kids about it while ago," he said. "It was for them. Yes, I would have loved to coach a team in the State tournament, but that wasn't my final goal. That wasn't my goal when I came back here to coach. My goal was to try to get out of them the best that I could get out of them "I had my fulfillment in athletics. I just came back from New Mexico. We started an Afro-American Alumni Association at New Mexico State. For 30 years, nobody has still broken my records down there as far as interceptions. I intercepted 16 passes at New Mexico State in three years. I had five out at Cameron. The record still stands and 1965 was my last year there. "Those things that were my personal goal as a coach I have no control over. I feel when I do the best I can in coaching a kid, that's where I get my satisfaction. I knew I wasn't such a great coach, as people call it. But I feel satisfied within myself because I think I did what I felt was the best that I could do." Good luck in your new challenge, Coach. Menefee to be featured in New Mexico State guide

The caption reads: "Hartwell Menefee was one of the great two-way players in school history. His 80-yard touchdown catch against Trinity in 1964 remains the third longest in school history. He also holds the school record with 16 career interceptions."

Menefee not only let the team in interceptions, he also led the team in receiving in 1965 and '65. I image when we get the full brochure we'll find Menefee's name in even more categories.

I think the interception record is really amazing, having stood 32 years. These modern-day secondary specialists still haven't broken that standard, even though teams are throwing the football more than ever. Coach Clarence Dewberry is "Dew-n-it" Tough
by Amy Green
It’s that time of year when the Tough Man competition comes to town. This event brings out the local barroom brawlers, construction workers and gym rats that all want a shot at a cash prize and to be considered the toughest man in town. So what happens when you win your local Tough Man contest?
Where I live, in Southwest Oklahoma, guys like Grady Brewer and George Tahdinoppah go on to box professionally. Others volunteer their time to teach the sweet science to some loyal and apt pupils that gather at the local boxing gym. A perfect example is Clarence Dewberry, who won the Tough Man contest in 1993, 1994 and 1996.

Today Clarence attracts a growing clientele at Lawton Boxing Center, where he spends a few hours each week sharing his knowledge and skill with local boxers, both pro and amateur, and with those who may never compete, but simply work out for the enjoyment of the sport.
I am among the latter.
For several rounds a week, we face each other across the ring, me eyeing him warily, him regarding me with a variety of different expressions – sometimes dismay for shoddy defense or the telegraphed right you could see coming at you from the next county – sometimes a broad grin for a move actually executed with some skill (usually my jab or, more recently, a good body shot he seemed quite impressed with).
That grin, his nod of approval, or the exclamation “Beautiful!” coming from Clarence makes me feel like I’ve KO’d a prime Mike Tyson. When we’re not in the coach/pupil role, I’ve learned a little bit about “Coach Dewberry.” And he’s not just a guy that knocked out a bunch of wannabe fighters in some local contests.
Clarence Dewberry joined the Army in 1977 at age 18 where he told me he started boxing as a kind of therapy.
“I was 18, in Germany, young, homesick, depressed. I was drinking a lot. There was a lot of peer pressure to do drugs,” he said, “which I never did. But I was drinking a LOT of liquor. The guy that ran the Class 6 thought because I bought so much liquor, I was selling it to the Germans. That guy was Mr. Berry, and he encouraged me to try out for the boxing team. From then on it was Berry and Dewberry. I was undefeated in Holland and Germany.”

Being undefeated in Holland was a bit of a mixed blessing for Clarence, who won the Holland title and was chosen to represent that country in the Olympic trials, but turned down that chance to try and fight in Dallas/Ft. Worth and represent the United States. He narrowly missed a spot in the U.S. trials, with a defeat in the quarter finals, and lost a chance to compete against Evander Holyfield. It was a tough break for the lesser known fighter who had the heart and desire to fight for a chance to represent his own country and who had sacrificed a spot he already earned on the Dutch team.
Fighting at light heavy for the All Army team from 1983 until 1989, Clarence compiled a 32-3 record and saw a lot of the world when he competed, traveling as far as Florence, Italy and Uganda, as well as throughout the United States. His career boxing for the U.S. Army earned him several honors, which included the Inner Service Title, where he defeated a fighter from each branch of the service.
Coaching the All Army boxing team in 1993, 1994, 1998 and 1999 also brought Clarence success. The first year he coached, the All Army boxers were 12-12 in Inner Service Competition; during his tenure, the team was awarded the Army Male Athletes of the Year in boxing.
Boxing was proving to be excellent therapy for Clarence. 1981 was the year he was runner-up in the Golden Gloves. 1984 saw him gain a bronze medal at the Olympic trials. With all the attention he received from the trials, the pro trainers were showing interest.
“After the ’84 trials, I was supposed to fight for Dave Jacobs who trained Sugar Ray Leonard,” Clarence recalled. “But I turned him down to re-enlist for another six years. “
When Marvin Hagler’s trainers, the Petronelli brothers, came calling, Clarence was again in a contract situation with the military.
“I had just contracted again to the Army and didn’t know if I could break my contract, so I never turned pro. But it was awesome for the Petronellis to offer me a chance to fight for them; at the time Hagler was the champion.”
Between his Army obligations and trying to make the pros, Clarence was having his way with local fighters who entered the Tough Man contests. His victories in the contests here in Oklahoma were in the summer and fall of 1993 and 1994, and one last time in 1996.
Having fought his way to the very top of the Tough Man ranks, Clarence was ready for the National Tough Man in Las Vegas in 1996, but was unable to make that fight due to his return to Germany for another tour of duty.
Clarence retired from the United States Army in 1999 and still wanted to pursue his dream of boxing professionally.
“After the Army, I was going to try to fight professionally, but because of back injuries and two surgeries for degenerative disc disease, I couldn’t do the conditioning, the proper running and the rope. So I’ve been volunteering from 2000 to now.”
Professional boxing’s loss of not having Clarence Dewberry among their ranks is our gain here in Oklahoma. He sums up his efforts to pass on his knowledge quite simply: “What’s most rewarding for me is to see the fruits of my experience and knowledge come out in other people, seeing my knowledge and technical skills picked up by others. And that knows no age barrier. It’s from 10-year-old amateur JC Vasquez to a pro like Grady 'BB’ Brewer.
“Yes, of course it’s a labor of love,” Clarence insisted as our conversation drew to a close. “I give my experience and my knowledge to those who want it.”
Facing Clarence in the ring, I feel that love if I drop my left hand. It’s a subtle but firm reminder to me that he’s there – representing skill, knowledge, and the encouragement to keep learning.

A Better Place

Don't worry about me because I have gone to a better place.
A better place where I will feel no more hurt,
no more pain and no more sorrow -
A better place where I can finally lay my burden to rest and leave all my problems behind.
A better place where my Jesus and I will walk hand in hand and make footprints in the sand.
A better place that I can finally call home ~ so forget me not because I Love all of you and one day I will welcome you with open arms.
At the pearly gates of this better place.
We all loved her but God lover her more.
She was a sweet sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and aunt.

General Notes: Funeral Services Held at St. James Catholic Church.

Lincoln Prep High School senior Gesina Dewberry had looked forward to celebrating a successful high school career with her classmates at prom Friday night.
Instead, her classmates spent Thursday mourning her death from the cancer she had been battling for a year.
The senior class was excused to attend the funeral at St. James Catholic church. Dewberry, 17, known to everyone as "Gina," later was buried in her prom dress at Calvary Cemetery.
"God bless us all and take our sister Gina safely home," the Rev. William Hubmann said at the funeral service. "May our farewell express our affection for her."
Five of Dewberry's classmates, who make up Lincoln Prep's Gospel Chorale, performed in tribute to her. Lacretta Ross, Chris Rembert, Micale Williamson, Carlton Sunderburk and Cami Johnson each wiped away tears but raised their voices joyously as they sang, "For He Cares."
"She was the type of person who, no matter what was going on, she thought of others. She would say, 'Don't worry about me," Rembert said afterward.
"Even through her sickness, she was more concerned about everybody else's problems. She would come in with a smile and lift us up. She was really an inspiration... A lot of her friends are taking this really hard."
One of Dewberry's favorite activities for years was Girl Scouts, and many former members of Girl Scout Troop 674 also attended the funeral.
"She was just a person who always had social things going. She always had friends," said Gayle Jensen, who shared the troop leadership with Dewberry's mother, Christine Dewberry, for about 10 years. "She loved cooking and camping." Jensen said Dewberry had kept up with her studies even during her illness and had achieved a 3.5 grade point average this year, earning her a spot in the National Honor Society.
Jensen said Dewberry had major surgery in August but had not missed much school this year and had been feeling well recently. One of her last fun excursions with her mother was to pick out her prom dress. But then her condition worsened several weeks ago. She had gone to Research Medical Center for treatment Monday, where she suddenly died that day.
Her parents will accept her diploma at Lincoln Prep's graduation June 2.
