According to the newspaper article, "I guess it's because we work so hard and stick together and sing all the time."
That's Clayburn Dewberry's explanation of how he and his 13 children have wrested a happy, plentiful living from a 40-acre homestead farm near Guthrie for the past 38 years, kept off the relief rolls and out of the jails.
The 87-year-old Negro brought four of his six sturdy sons to the Oklahoma Education association convention here Thursday and stole the show at the Oklahoma Folklore society's annual meeting in the Municipal Auditorium.
Sustained cheers from an audience of 500 persons brought them back to the stage again and again for encores of Negro spirituals carried down through generations of southern
slaves.
"Praise God, I'm satisfied For me He bled and died."
When the day's work is through, the Dewberry family, the six boys and seven girls and the 64-year-old mother, gather in their five-room farmhouse and sing those spirituals.
"No", Dewberry said, "I never did see the words in writin' and I don't know what I'd do if I did because I can't hardly read and neither can the boys. We're just workers."
Dewberry said he just picked them up while a boy on a Texas plantation. He came to Oklahoma in 1900 and settled on the homestead site the family still occupies.
As the boys grew up, Dewberry explained, he just kept them satisfied at home by sitting around the house and learning the spirituals.
A couple of months ago, Mrs. H. Seay Binion, supervisor of primary training at Central State Teachers' College, Edmond, heard about the Dewberry Family.
She visited them at their home and after much argument finally got them to agree to come to the convention. Heretofore, they only had sung at the Negro Methodist Church near Guthrie.
"The only way to keep out of trouble," the father philosophized, "is to keep busy. You don't have to go on relief if you works the land hard. We ain't had no trouble but I guess it's because we works so hard and sticks together all the time."
The sons who sang with Dewberry Thursday are Eddie, 33 years old; Marcellus, 25 years old; Frank, 27 years old; and Warren, 28 years old.
All work on the farm with their father except the seasonal employment in a cottonseed oil plant at Guthrie.
Their encores used all the time that Wayne Campbell, Oklahoma City University drama professor, and his students, left vacant Thursday by failing to show up for their spot on the program.
"I don't know what happened to them," said Mrs. Ethel P. Moore, Tulsa, society secretary, "but we got along all right without them.:
Campbell's students were scheduled to present a drama of Oklahoma life but when the time came they could not be found.
Another highlight of the society program was the retelling of Choctaw legends by Muriel Wright, 1612 Youngs, Boulevard, a full-blood Choctaw Indian and an author on 11 February 1938
(Oklahoma Negro Family Thrills Folklore Society, The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Feb 11, 1938, 11. Hereinafter cited as The Oklahoman.).

C. D. moved with his family to Lawton, Oklahoma in 1902. According to a letter he wrote, his father, C. B., his Uncle G. P. Harrison, a Mr. John Banks and a Mr. John Turks all moved to the Lawton area because of a new land opening for the Homesteaders and the farms available in that new opening. Although he didn't remember all the details, the first Negro School was built on C. B. Dewberry's farm about 5 miles west of Lawton.
They moved back to Logan County, Oklahoma in 1912 where his father bought another farm south of Seward because there were several years of drought and crop failures in Lawton. He attended school there and married Leola Harvey in 1921. His four older children were born there.
C. D. moved his family to Ponca City during February of 1930. He worked first for the Santa Fe Railroad and later, beginning 5 June 1944, Continental Oil Company where he was responsible for the service station, supervised parking, and chauffeured company presidents. He retired from Continental Oil in April of 1965, and then drove a school bus until 1972.
C. D. was made a Mason in August 1922 at Guthrie, OK Eureka Lodge # 14. C. D. was a member of the St. John Baptist Church since 1930, serving as a Deacon since 1931. He was Worshipful Master of Weber Lodge No. 26 A&FM, a Past Master, a Scottish Rite Mason of 33 degrees and a member of the Supreme Council of Scottish Rite orders. He was elected Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons of Oklahoma in 1965, serving in that post for 22 years. He was awarded the honorary degree of Past General Grand High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons in 1978. He has attended numerous Annual Supreme Councils of the 33rd degree Masons, including the 86th Annual Session held in Monrovia, Liberia in 1972.
He has served as chairman of the Ponca City Housing Authority, being first appointed to this board in 1968.
On 14 October 1983 follow the death of his son, Lester, C. D. prepared the following information to be used during his burial service. "C. D.

Doctor of Philosophy in Education. General Lamar Harrison assumed the presidency of Langston University, Langston, OK on January 5, 1940, remaining until 1960 when he resigned.
According to his obituary, "G. L." or "Buddy" as he was fondly called by close friends and relatives, was the oldest son of the nine children born to Generale and Caroline Harrison. Before he was a year old his parents traveled to Comanche County, Indian Territory, and became early settlers as homesteaders in what later became the State of Oklahoma.
Education was important to the Harrison family and though there were no schools in Comanche County for Negro children, his father insisted that his children be taught at the county School with the white homesteaders' children.
"G.L." has a thirst for knowledge, performed well in school, and received an appointment as a teacher before he had what he considered adequate training for the profession. He was determined to prepare himself through higher education. He realized that in order to reach his goal he needed to complete standard high school studies. Accordingly, he enrolled and was graduated from Lincoln High School in Kansas City, Missouri. His further educational pursuits resulted in academic degrees: A.B. from Howard University of Washington, D.C., B.E. and A.M. from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio and Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1936.
Dr. Harrison married the former Dorothy Pennman of Portsmouth, Ohio. They had two sons, Lamar and Richard, both now deceased.
Dr. Harrison had a long and distinguished career in the field of education. He served as the Acting Head of the Department of Education at Virginia Union University, Director of Elementary Teachers Education at West Virginia College, Professor and Dean of Education at Prairie View College, Prairie View, Texas, a member of the Board of Trustees of Wilberforce University from 1932 to 1937. and as President of Langston University in Oklahoma from 1940 - 1960. G. Lamar authored several studies dealing with Black rural school systems and his doctoral dissertation was on the training of Black teachers to serve in rural school districts.
When he began his administration in 1940, Langston had standing only as a "standard four year college". During his tenure the school was brought up to par in library, physical plant, and faculty. Under his leadership as President of Langston University the value of the campus physical plant quadrupled, major improvements included modern sewage-disposal plant, paved streets, modern stadium, and many new buildings. The University was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and affiliated with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. In the very first year he brought to the campus four new faculty members who had earned doctorates. In 1941, the name of the school was officially changed from the Colored Agricultural and Normal University to what it had always popularly been called - Langston University.
In 1948, Langston became a member of the Association of American Colleges. Subsequent accreditations achieved during G. Lamar's tenure included membership in the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and affiliation with the State Department for training of foreign students and nationals.
In 1949 the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a resolution that the library building at Langston University be named in his honor.
Subsequent to his retirement from Langston, Dr. and Mrs. Harrison moved to Chicago where he continued his involvement in the field of higher education, serving as: Professor of Education and Director of Information Services at Chicago Teachers College, Professor of Education at Roosevelt College, and Chief Educational Planning, Chicago Committee on Urban Opportunity. His last position was as Director, Chicago Senior Aides Project, Chicago Committee on Urban Opportunity.
Dr. Harrison was a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, member of Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church, and a member of various scholastic honorary societies and educational associations.
Dr. Harrison received many citations, honors, and plaques in recognition of his dedicated service in the field of education and served on many governmental and educational commissions, the Southern Regional Education Board, the Association of Land Grant Colleges, and the Board of Trustees, State Department, Wilberforce University.
The Harrisons have given material and moral support to organizations committed to community service. Through their arrangements on a more private level, many students of limited financial means have been enabled to attend and complete college and to move on to further and successful careers.
On Saturday, October 25, 1985 Dr. Harrison's personal papers were presented to Langston University to become a part of the Black Collection Center.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Dorothy; two brothers, Ulysses and Prentice Harrison of Lawton, Oklahoma; other relatives and many friends.
In a speech before the Chicago Sunday Evening Club several years ago, Dr. Harrison stated his philosophy of living was based on the Book of St. Matthew, Chapter 7, verses 1,2,3, and 12 which reads as follows:
Judge not, that ye be not judges, For with what
judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in Thy brother's eye but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.
The more modern translation and interpretation of these verses is, "Treat others as you would have them treat you" (Zella J. Black,
Langston University, A History.).

Mr. Monroe Dewberry, Jr., passed Tuesday, November 25, 1969.
He leaves to mourn a wife, Mrs. Pearlie Dewberry; two sons Lewis Ray Dewberry, Tucson, Arizona, and Elihue Jeffrey, Tyler, Texas; one daughter, Glenda Dewberry, Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Arlene Willis, Mrs. Charlene Dixon, and Mrs. Izora Moore of Flint, Texas; two brothers, Maurice Dewberry and Steve Dewberry of Tyler, Texas; one granddaughter, Karen Denise Jeffrey, and a host of other relatives and friends. He had one granddaughter, Angelique Dewberry, who preceded him in death.
Our Lord moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform. So it was God who saw fit, not man. Death does not come to a living soul, nor age to a loving heart. He laughed, lived, and lifted. He was a Christian, and was tolerant, radiant, and trustful. Those qualities reveal the possession of omnipotent power.
What a consoling thought for the highest hope of all is to come home, at last, to our Father in Heaven. So let us look up, even though it be through tears, to our God of Consolation and say, "Thy will be done." After all, if the road is hard and long, God gives us the strength to walk it; if the path is dark and benighted, it is His promise which lights the way.
Bro. Dewberry has gone from a world of troubles and conflict into the realms of indescribable and perpetual bliss. Paul wrote, I have a desire to depart and be with Christ which is far better.
Remember that God's Way is that man follow His redeemer in life, in death, and in Resurrection (Obituary Monroe Dewberry.).

Reflections of Eric Brown
I, Eric McFall Brown was born in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of the late Sgt. Major Charles Brown, Retired and Mrs. Lillie McFall Brown. When I was six months old my father received official orders from the United States Army, to transfer to Ft. Lawton in Seattle, Washington. At five years of age I was baptized at Mount Zion Baptist Church, where I maintained my membership.
My education began in Seattle Buddhist Day Nursery. I attended Kindergarten at Bailey Gatzert Elementary School and first grade at Leschi Elementary School. I became an avid reader with major interests in music, drama and other fine arts. I attended Helen Bush School 2nd through 6th grades, Concordia Lutheran School 7th through 9th grades, Seattle Prep Matteo Ricci in the 10th grade where I was a reporter for the Prep Panther (school newspaper). I wrote several original articles for the publication. I attended The Northwest Academy of the Arts in 11th grade. I graduated from Franklin High School June 1982. I played all of the piano music at my high school graduation ceremony. After high school, I attended and graduated from the American River Junior College in Sacramento, California. I received my communication license from Bailie School of Broadcasting in Seattle, Washington. I was proficient in programming, production, board operation, dubbing carts, news writing, copywriting, commercial writing editing, and music research.
After graduation, I was hired as a Disc Jockey at KRIZ-KZIZ (Z Twins) Radio Station for five years. I was later employed at Ernst Hardware Stores. My dream was to become a National Broadcaster. Bernard Shaw was my admired role model.
My awards include: NAACP ACT-SO Award in 1981; I composed my musical composition. I represented the NAACP Chapter of Seattle, Washington, In Denver, Colorado at the National NAACP Convention; Mount Zion Baptist Church Organ Musical Scholarship Award.
My youth activities included performing in the Opera, Aida, in 1982 where I played an Egyptian soldier; a member of the Northwest
Boy choir, Mount Zion Junior and Young Adult Choirs. I was the first youth to play the pipe organ at Mount Zion Baptist Church. At Franklin High School I was a member of the choir, a member of the newspaper staff and the Drama Department. I played leading roles in West Side Story and Guys and Dolls.
I was one of a very loving family. I enjoyed life (Obituary - Eric McFall Brown, Obituary - Eric McFall Brown, Seattle, Washington, Oct 14, 1995. Hereinafter cited as Obituary - Eric McFall Brown.).
