My Jamaican Families: Moore, Burke, Douglas et al
Family Trees
Several family lines have been traced. Some are traced back as far as the 17th century, and one to the 13th, through family lines in Jamaica and the British Isles.
According to numerous history books Sir John Moore, the military strategist who defeated Napoleon in the Battle of Corunna in 1809, was never married. Yet we have found over 260 of his descendants in Jamaica and elsewhere.
Other ancestors arriving in Jamaica from Britain and other parts of Europe:
John Holloway, baptism 1722 in Ravenstone, Buckinghamshire, England. Died Jamaica 1770.
John Morrison, born Scotland, went to Jamaica as overseer of an estate. Died England 1777.
Patrick Burke, born Ireland, died Jamaica 1796.
William Webb, born Wiltshire, England 1774-1775. Died Jamaica 1812.
Henry Shergold, born England (?), printer, died Jamaica 1827.
Flavian Lions born France 1788-1789 (and brother Belvue born 1803), jewellers, died Jamaica 1874 and 1840 respectively.
Thomas Bartibo, died Jamaica 1702; John Bartibo died Jamaica 1740. Family possibly from Portugal.
The following is a list of the main surnames included in my family tree. Surnames found in countries other than Jamaica are identified as follows: England (E), Ireland (I), Scotland (S), Canada (C), Germany (G), USA (U), Panama (P). If no country is identified, the names were found in Jamaica (J).
