FAMILY OF JAMES [4]
I will now trace the line of James [4], (brother of Joseph [4], my ancestor). James [4], son of Hudson [3] of Newington, was baptized in 1748, although Mrs. Phoebe Ann Mowe's notes, to which I am indebted for this line, say 1749. In many cases there is a year's discrepancy in early dates, as the calendar was changed and both old and new styles were used for a time. In 1774, James [4] married Mary Nutter, born 1750, descended from John [4], Hatevil [3], Lt. Anthony [2], and his original Hatevil [1]. The younger Hatevil [3] was. therefore, a brother of Henry Nutter, and so the brothers Joseph [4] and James [4] Peavey married Arabella and Mary Nutter, who were second cousins. James [4], as we have seen, lived most of his life on the home place in Newington, and the town records show him a tavern keeper in at least the years from 1793 to 1800. He signed in 1776 the Colonial defense document from Barrington, with his brother Joseph [4]. I have copious notes, prepared by Mrs.Mowe and her family which show his descendants in great detail. The children of James [4] were, Anna (or Nancy), born 1774, and married William Scott of Newington; Mary, born 1776 who married William Johnson; John Nutter [5], born 1778; James Boyd [5]. born 1778 who married Hannah Bracebridge; Sally, born 1780, and married Rev. Reuben Peasles; Elizabeth, born 1783; Hopley Yetton [5], born 1783; Daniel [5], born 1785 but died young; Charles [5], born 1787; Eleanor, born 1789, and married |
