Census 1850, Sardinia, Erie Co., NY pg. 111:  Dudley C. age 60, NH is listed with his 2nd wife Sophia (51) and Josiah Blake (13).  They're next door to Dudley's sons James (30), William (21) and Ading (Adam/Ab ner) (25).  Israel (39) is close by.

Census 1880, Jamestown, Steuben Co., IN Dudley age 95 was living with his son Abner (Adam). Many researchers have been trying to find proof of who Dudley C. Peavey's parents were!  (have been searching for over 40 years+).

Serious researchers like Ross D. Peavey (who r. in Canada), June Peavey and many other descendants of Dudley's, have been tr ying to find were Dudley was buried/death place in hopes of finding parents n ames.  Later researchers (including myself), who I have been in contact with haven't had any more luck than our early predecessors did unfortunately. A reas that have been checked are:  All of MI, including Lansing State re cords for death years between 1886 and 1889, (including small towns records i n MI have searched such as Mecosta Co., City of Ludington, Hillsdale Co ., City of Coldwater, & others!), IN, still trying to search OH to thi s day. After researching with June and Grace Staples, we all came to the sam e conclusion that it was very possible that Dudley and Eliphalet fit in John Peavey and Lois (Colbath/Colbroth) -Hudson desc. -many cluses or with Joseph -also in Hudson line.  We haven't found proof of this connection so we cont inued our search.  Mark Kulow did an independent search for Dudley's parents as well and came to the same conclusion that we had earlier as detailed above.  Jalanne has found desc of Eliphalet b. 1794 that named son middle name of Colbreath a variation of Colbath above!  Eliphalet B., son of Dudley/Daniel b . 1805 lived close to John Jr. of same John line.  Grace Staples was convince d of a connection between John or Joseph from Hudson's line.  I think that it 's interesting that there was an earlier Ann Josephine who died in 1838 born to John of same line in Strafford.  Josephine was born 1840 also in Strafford and her cemetery records list her as:  Josephine A. No proof can be found to make this connection.

Daniel D. Peavey is a little difficult to confirm with accuracy. In the 1880 Census he is living in Strafford with his wife Hannah from Ireland. However he is 75 (1805) and she is 40. There is no question on the original document that his age is 75 and there is no possibility that the writing is not clear. The marriage document for his son Escher names his father as Daniel D. so we know we have the correct Daniel for Escher and Daniels wife, is Hannah Cronin from Ireland. We also have an 1850 Census record for a Daniel in Strafford with a wife Betsy. See the notes on Betsey for information on her death. His age is 48 (1802) which is close enough for Census records. We do not find any other Daniels in Strafford during this time. Based on dates and location we would might be able to assume that this is the same Daniel with two different wives and 2 different families. The 1860 Census Reports would probably help shed more light on this issue. Daniel does not show up in Strafford on the 1860 Census so he may have moved for a time and returned. At this point we've listed this as the same Daniel and will try to gather more evidence to confirm our guess. It also seems likely that this Daniel is related to Dudley C. because of the location, the time frame, and the fact that Daniel has a son named Dudly. If we are able to prove this information it will help connect many seperate lines. It is highly likely that Daniel is a son or grandson of John Peavey and Lois Colbath for the same reasons that I have outlined for Dudley C. Peavey.

The death date for Daniel is also a small problem. The Co. records give the death date as April 6, 1880. There may be a question on the cemetery records about the month. The information for Daniel that is on the Census taken on June 21, 1880 has clearly been crossed off even though it is still readable. This may mean that Hannah gave his name as the head of house and then it was crossed off since he had died in April. This seems to be the more likely circustance so I've left his death date as April 6, 1880 and assumed the census indicates that he had died before June 21, 1880, not after.

There are also some problems with the names of this second family of Daniel's. In the 1870 Census his children are listed as Issachar, Emma and Daniel E. Peavey. In 1880 they are listed as Eschar, Emma and Dudly. Eschar (Escher)(Issachar) can be atributed to spelling errors. Daniel E. and Dudly can't be spelling problems. The most likely solution is that the E. in the 1870 census should be a D. and this was Daniel Dudley  who was named for his father. The fact that the name was given to the younger son may indicate that Hannah gave her father's name to the first born son and they gave Daniel's name to the second. The birth dates for Hannah are also a problem as she is listed as 38 in 1870 and 40 in 1880. The 40 seems to be more clearly written in the 1880 census so I've used that age for now.

Per Mark Kulow's research from Rev. Enoch Place's journ al, On 8/10/1856, Betsy Peavey, wife of Daniel Peavey requested that Re. Enoc h Place visit with her.  When he arrived, she was too exhausted to speak with him having had 4 gallons of water removed from her by tapping, a few hours before.  She suffered from dropsy and died 1/10/1857 when her illness worsen ed.  Rev. Enoch Place preached at her funeral service and made the following notes in his diary afterwards.  "Mrs Peavey, professed religion
some 26 years before and united with the Christian Baptist denomination. She was a gifted woman, but always poor and needy from her childhood. She died in full hope of a better resurrection.  Her husband has been a drunkard almost from his childhood.  This family first and last have been a great expense to the town of Strafford.  Mark Kulow comments on this, "Being a friend of the Peavey famil y would give more credence to these words since Enoch would have wanted to sp are their feelings if possible. His comments, per Mark Kulow, about others i n his journal indicate his tendency to make a sharp distinction between saint s and sinners. However, Daniel seemed to stay clear of religion and may have been a
problem to the family, but one man's opinion may not tell the whole story". [Peavey_Family.GED compiled by Mark & Harriet Kulow]

From the journal of Enoch Place, Sarah Jane Peavey was baptized Sunday April 4, 1858 after a revival meeting at William Stiles home at the age of 14. Her parents were not listed but the dates and location fit very well for her to be the daughter of Daniel. Betsey Jane Peavey (wife of Eliphalet) age 22 1/2 years was also baptized at this time. This would seem to be a clear indication that the families were closely connected and that Sarah Jane (sister of Eliphalet) was baptized at the same time as her sister-in-law, Betsey Jane Peavey nee Arlin. My notes for Betsey Jane confirm this connection. It is very likely that Betsey may have been acting as a surrogate mother for Sarah and it is even possible that she lived with them for awile. Daniel does not show up in the 1860 Census for Strafford

Subject: William Peavey

Hi June,

Had the following information waiting for me when I returned home.  I've asked for copies to be mailed to me but here's what I received by e-mail.

I believe this is William, son of Dudley:
William died 11 Aug 1858 at 39 years, 5 months and 7 days.  He is buried in the Chestnut Ridge Cemetery in Scott Township, Sandusky County, Ohio.

I am still trying to obtain a death record but that county did not record deaths until 1867.

Per Mark Kulows research (as well June's research), I a m attaching Israel
based on circumstantial evidence for now.  There isn't a p rimary source
to confirm this connection.   Mark Kulow's reasoning for making this
connection is as follows:
Israel was born in NH, found wife in ME (pro bably a sister to James' wife
Sally Steele), and lived in Sardinia with James , who is son of Dudley.
Israel followed the exact same path as James.
Cen sus 1:  1850, Sardinia, Erie Co., NY pg 112A:  Israel (39) is
listed with his wife Mimeta (310, and their children, Francis (15), Helen
(10), Mary (8), Annie Rodgers (35) is living with them.
Census 2:  1860, Sardinia, Erie Co., NY pg 335B: Israel (50) is listed
with his wife Matilda (40), and their child ren Louisa (18) nd Adell (7).
Israel is a shoemaker born in NH and Louisa is a teacher.
Census 3:  1870, Sardinia, Erie Co., NY pg 61:  Israel (59) NH is listed
with his wife Milly (51) ME and their daughters, Louisa (20) NY and
Adelle (16) NY.  He is a shoemaker. [Peavey_Family.GED compiled by Mark & Harriet Kulow]

I have attached Israel to Dudley C. Peavey because He was born in NH, found a wife in ME (probably a sister to James Wife Sally Steele), and lived in Sardinia with James who is connected to Dudley. Israel followed the exact same path as James and is likely a brother.

Notes for DAVID PEAVEY as written & compiled by Mark Ku low 5/7/2002:
Marriage record came from the LDS records for Civil marriages in Kennebec
Co., ME. This date fits with the birth of William David Peave y in
1838. Lucinda may have had a brother named Hiram Soule which would
exp lain the name of Charles Hiram Peavey.
The connection of David to his father D udley is based on information
related by M. Ellen (Peavey) Ames to her daught er-in-law, Inez (Thompson)
Ames and her grandson Edward Ames. The first story was in reference to
two brothers who were among the first settlers in Barrin gton. These
brothers would likely be Joseph (1740) and John Sr. (1757) since the
third brother James stayed in Newington. It is possible that John Sr. was
the father of Dudley but the evidence for that connection is
circumstantia l at this point, although very likely. The story goes as
follows: "The two br others had gotten into a fight and had not spoken for
quite some time. One ev ening one of the brothers got drunk and his horse
took him to the other broth er's house by mistake. The other brother
thinking the first brother had come to apologize ran out into the yard
and shook his brother's hand. The result w as that the brothers remained
fast friends after that." The drinking in this family branch seems to
have been common for several generations. Many of the other branches of
the family were very religious and opposed to any kind of d rinking so it
seems to have been an aberation that may have started with Gran dpa Hudson
who owned and operated an inn which was also a tavern. The fact th at Rev.
Enoch Place fails to mention several of John Sr.'s sons may be an
i ndication that he did not have contact with them due to the seperation
of the church and the taverns.
Martha Ellen also related a story about her father Da vid and his wife
Lucinda visiting David's father in Illinois. They took two s mall boys
with them and makes it likely the trip was in 1840 after the birth of
Charles Hiram and before the birth of George Washington. This would match
the time frame for Dudley to have been visiting his son Eliphalet in
Illino is prior to moving to NY. Dudley is the only Peavey who might
have been in Illinois at this time who would fit as a father for David.
In addition M. Ellen related that David's father lived to be 103 years
old. This again matc hes other family histories all of which state that
Dudley lived to be more th an 100 years old. These histories have a common
story which relates that "Dud ley liked to hoe in the garden but his
eyesite was so poor he would hoe up th e plants with the weeds. It became
necessary to build him his own garden to h oe in order to avoid the
destruction of the family garden." Other information from Census Reports
and family histories confirm and support this connection . The connection
is certain, based on the testimony of family members who wer e living at
the time. Dudley is the only possible father for David.
David s erved as a spy for the Union Army in the Civil War. He was in
several very da ngerous situations as evidenced by bullet holes in his
pants when he came bac k home. He promised a young man, George Bacon one
of his daughters when he re turned from the war. George picked Annie who

birth at the age of 44, shortly after David came home from the war.

Marriage record came from the LDS records for Civil marriages in Kennebec Co., ME. This date fits with the birth of William David Peavey in 1838. Lucinda may have had a brother named Hiram Soule which would explain the name of Charles Hiram Peavey.

The connection of David to his father Dudley is based on information related by M. Ellen (Peavey) Ames to her daughter-in-law, Inez (Thompson) Ames and her grandson Edward Ames. The first story was in reference to two brothers who were among the first settlers in Barrington. These brothers would likely be Joseph (1740) and John Sr. (1757) since the third brother James stayed in Newington. It is possible that John Sr. was the father of Dudley but the evidence for that connection is circumstantial at this point, although very likely. The story goes as follows: "The two brothers had gotten into a fight and had not spoken for quite some time. One evening one of the brothers got drunk and his horse took him to the other brother's house by mistake. The other brother thinking the first brother had come to apologize ran out into the yard and shook his brother's hand. The result was that the brothers remained fast friends after that." The drinking in this family branch seems to have been common for several generations. Many of the other branches of the family were very religious and opposed to any kind of drinking so it seems to have been an aberation that may have started with Grandpa Hudson who owned and operated an inn which was also a tavern. The fact that Rev. Enoch Place fails to mention several of John Sr.'s sons may be an indication that he did not have contact with them due to the seperation of the church and the taverns.

Martha Ellen also related a story about her father David and his wife Lucinda visiting David's father in Illinois. They took two small boys with them and makes it likely the trip was in 1840 after the birth of Charles Hiram and before the birth of George Washington. This would match the time frame for Dudley to have been visiting his son Eliphalet in Illinois prior to moving to NY. Dudley is the only Peavey who might have been in Illinois at this time who would fit as a father for David. In addition M. Ellen related that David's father lived to be 103 years old. This again matches other family histories all of which state that Dudley lived to be more than 100 years old. These histories have a common story which relates that "Dudley liked to hoe in the garden but his eyesite was so poor he would hoe up the plants with the weeds. It became necessary to build him his own garden to hoe in order to avoid the destruction of the family garden." Other information from Census Reports and family histories confirm and support this connection. The connection is certain, based on the testimony of family members who were living at the time. Dudley is the only possible father for David.

David served as a spy for the Union Army in the Civil War. He was in several very dangerous situations as evidenced by bullet holes in his pants when he came back home. He promised a young man, George Bacon one of his daughters when he returned from the war. George picked Annie who was very beautiful with alabaster skin, silky hair, and heavenly blue eyes. George and Annie lived on a farm next door to David in West Waterville. (See 1880 Census under Annie) His wife Lucinda died in child birth at the age of 44, shortly after David came home from the war. (There is some confusion on dates here with the birth of her last child Etta) David lived another 30 years and was very close to his family. He had a route that he followed to bring candy to all of his many grandchildren. He wore a long white beard and was followed everywhere by his faithful little white dog. He became known in the town as old "Uncle Peavey". At some point his home was destroyed by fire and he rebuilt it a very fine home to replace it. He still cut hay with a scythe and was known for his fast, hard and clean work. His wife Lucinda was a descendant of several Mayflower passengers including John and Priscilla Arden.

Per Mark Kulow tree.  This hasn't been fully proven but because of
overwhelmi ng circumstancial evidence, I am also placing here.
Probate records in my po ssession stating that Eliphalet had no wife or
children at the time probate r ecord was filed.  It states that he
supposed to have brothers but there resid ences were unknown.
Both spellings are used in same probate record:  Peavey an d Peavy as well
as Eliphlet L. and Eliphalet.
Will also in my possession-Eli phalet signs his name "Eliphalet L.
Peavy"-will dated 8/11/1883
Notes per M. Kulow:
According to the "History of Anderson Co. 1877", E. L. Peavey was a
"Justice of the Peace in Lincoln Township in 1875. This seems to be
Elipha let since he is in the same area in the 1880 Census with Roxaselena.

Also, important to note that this Eliphalet could very well be the son of
Eliphalet b. 1794-brother to Dudley C. Peavey.  I think that this
Elipha let L. married Frances Driskill in 9/19/1838 in Edgar Co., IL and
was Eliphal et's first wife and that it is also possible that Thomas is
their son.  On 18 60 census record, listing Eliphalet, Roxa and Thomas J.,
it states that Thoma s was born in 1837 in Illinois to give further
credence to this idea.  No oth er proof can be found.  Marriage

[Big_Mama_Tree.ged compiled by Lisa Braendle]

According to the journal of Enoch Place (per Mark Kulow ), Betsey Jane
Peavey was baptized on Sun. 4/4/1858 after a revival meeting a t home of
Mr. Wm Stiles.  Her age was listed as 22 1/2 yrs which would make h er
birth date 10/1835.  This is one year off of the date recorded in the
ce metery records but these kinds of errors were common.  1860 census
places her age at 23 which means she would have been 24 years old in
10/1860.  This mat ches cem. records for her birth to have been
10/23/1836.  Betsey was baptized along with her sister-in-law Sarah Jane,
dau of Daniel, who was 14 years old at the time.  Based on the report of
REv. Enoch regarding the sinful conditi on of Sarah's father and recent
loss of her Mother, it is likely that Betsey and Sarah were very close
and Betsey may have acted as a surrogate mother for the young girl.
On Thurs., 12/5/1861 Enoch Place preached the sermon at the f uneral of
Betsey Jane, wife of Eliphalet Peavey, aged 25 years, 1 mo. and 11 days.
"Sister Peavey was a worthy good woman.  I baptized her some over thre e
years since.  She died of Typhoid Fever, in full hope of the promised
res t to God's saints.  A husband, one son, parents, one brother, sisters
and fri ends are left to mourn her loss". [Peavey_Family.GED compiled by Mark & Harriet Kulow]

According to the journal of Enoch Place, Betsey Jane Peavey was baptized on Sunday, April 4, 1858 after a revival meeting at the home of Mr. William Stiles. Her age was listed as 22 1/2 years which would make her birth date October of 1835. This is one year off of the date recorded in the cemetery records but these kinds of errors were common. The 1860 Census places her age at 23 years old which means that she would have been 24 years old in October of 1860. This matches the cemetery records for her birth to have been October 23, 1836. Rev. Enoch was probably off by a year in his record. She was baptized along with her sister-in-law Sarah Jane, daughter of Daniel, who was 14 years old at the time. Based on the report of Rev. Enoch regarding the sinful condition of Sarah's father and the recent loss of her mother it is likely that Betsey and Sarah were very close and Betsey may have acted as a surrogate mother for the young girl.

On Thursday December 5, 1861 Enoch Place preached the sermon at the funeral of Betsey Jane, wife of Eliphalet Peavey, aged 25 years, 1 month and 11 days. Sister Peavey was a worthy good women. I baptized her some over three years since. She died of Typhoid fever, in full hope of the promised rest to God's Saints. A husband, one son, parents, one brother, sisters and friends are left to mourn her loss.

Notes written by M. Kulow for MARTHA ELLEN PEAVEY:
A strange tale has been han ded down in the family about Martha Ellen and
her sister Anne. They were atte nding a Halloween party one evening with
M. Ellen's fiancee, Benjamin Allen. There was a superstition at the time
that if you walked down the cellar steps backwards holding a mirror, you
would see a vision that would come true. Ann e and Benny were the only
ones who would try it and when they were about half way down the stairs
Benny suddenly grabbed the mirror from Anne and ran to a corner in the
cellar. He wouldn't talk to anyone for awhile but he finally to ld them
that he had seen himself lying dead in a coffin and Anne was combing his
hair. Shortly afterwards Benjamin went off to fight in the Civil War
wh ere he was killed. The body was sent home and Anne did comb his hair
and stra ighten his clothes while he was in the coffin. It is not always
easy to sort out fact from fiction, although some very strange things do
happen. The mind and the power of suggestion can produce false beliefs in
many. Satan has incr edible power in the world of Voodoo, which has been
witnessed by some very de vout missionaries. There is a need for great
caution in order to make sure th at something is of God and not of Satan.
The magicians in the court of Pharao h were able to produce miracles
almost as powerful as the ones God produced t hrough Moses. Many a
believer has been lead astray by things that appeared to come from God
when in reality they were produced by Satan. At the same time God has
demonstrated Himself through displays of miraculous power, such as th e
resurrection which is fundamental to the Christian faith. Our
understandi ng of the "principalities and powers" is very limited and just
because someth ing appears to be good, does not mean that it did not
originate from the "Ang el of Light". We don't want to miss the multitude
of miraculous blessings tha t come from God, but we certainly don't want
to walk in the realm of the "Evi l One". Caution and spiritual discernment
is advised. Thank God that He prote cts us from things that we are not
equipped to handle. [Peavey_Family.GED compiled by Mark & Harriet Kulow]

15 July 1848
15 October 1847

Census 1880: Jamestown, Steuben Co., IN  Page 343A: Julius (30) is single and working on the Yates farm near his father.

It is not know what his birth middle name really was as different names have been applied to him and most or even all were probably nicknames: Brace, Boyington, Boyd, whatever.

According to Lisa Braendle:

"Julius Peavey - if I remember correctly Janet Stout questioned where I found Julius' middle name as Brace.  I cannot find any proof of this middle name.  I have seen Boyington/Boyd as middle name
written by Coldwater branch of Dudley descendants but I also saw Wellington for Dudley in these records without any documentation to prove it.  I would list Julius under Julius B. and then in notes you could put possible middle names, because I've seen them all."

Congressional Parsonage at Ipswich, SD ( by Rev Geo. E. Green) on Dec.5,1922   Lula was born to son of a German immigrant Gotleib Schlaser born in 1840 in Sapheinenburg, Germany. Her mother died when she was a small girl so she had to help raise the family by being the homemaker.  She was a wonderful Christian kind loving woman.  Hardworking and self sacrificing, thought of her children first.  She died of a stroke with blood clots in the brain. Nov. 4,1976 at Lewiston, Idaho and was buried beside her husband in Vineland Cemetery, Clarkton,WA. They are the parents of June Peavey one of our  Peavey genealogist the past 35 years.  May be reached at  pvscribe@clarkston.com.

Christian man, never cussed, would just say ," Oh nuts".  Was a perfectionist and a great achiever, brilliant business man.  Farmed then invested in real Estate.  Told that the ten commandments are what we have to go by and was a Sabbath keeper. Very generous kind man who helped a lot of people along life's way. Believed in the golden rule, practiced it and his word was as good as gold.  Was told by a dr. that smoking wasn't harmful so did it.  Died a horrible death with emphazema. Horrible headaches that wouldn't stop prior to dieing.  His advice would be that some doctors are dead wrong

Notes for WESLEY DALE PEAVEY:
TO EVERYONE:

My double cousin named Dale Peavey DIED TODAY AT THE HOME OF HIS DAUGHTER IN MORAN, KA.

VIVIAN FLEW TO SAN ANTONIO,TEXAS AND DROVE HIM IN HIS MOTOR HOME BACK TO KANSAS TO HER HOUSE.  HE WAS SITTING IN A CHAIR IN HIS MOTOR HOME THIS MORNING, LAUGHING AND SINGING AND HAPPY.  HE ATE A BIG BREAKFAST. VIVI LEFT FOR WORK RETURNED TONIGHT TO FIND HER DAD DEAD IN THE CHAIR.

I WOULD LIKE TO WRITE A SHORT TRIBUTE TO MY SCRIBE:

DALE RETRIEVED GRANDPA AND GRANDMA'S FAMILY TREE RECORDS FROM HIS DAD'S THINGS WHEN HIS DAD DIED, AND BROUGHT THEM TO ME REQUESTING THAT WE DO A FAMILY TREE.

DALE TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY FOR ME AS HE WAS A CAREER AIR FORCE MAN.  HE EVEN WENT TO PAVIA, ITALY. AFTER HE RETIRED HE TOURED THE USA IN HIS MOTOR HOME, STILL VISITING PLACES AND PEOPLE FOR ME.

DALE RETURNED TO OUR VALLEY A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND LET ME COME TO HIS HOUSE DAILY AND TIE UP HIS COMPUTER WITH THE GENEALOGY.   HE TRIED TO TEACH ME WHAT LITTLE HE KNEW ON THE COMPUTER.

LAST WINTER HE READ A SERMON OUR DECEASED COUSIN DR. SAMUEL BERYL PEAVEY HAD WRITTEN,WHILE WE PHOTOED SOME PICTURES.  I TOLD DALE HE WAS GOING TO DIE BEFORE ME AND  I WAS GOING TO MAKE HIS KIDS PLAY IT AT HIS FUNERAL BECAUSE IT WAS HIS VOICE.  THAT PLEASED HIM.

THE BODY IS BEING EMBALMED TO FLY HIM HOME WHERE WE WILL HAVE A FUNERAL FOR HIM.  HE HAS REQUESTED THAT HE BE CREMATED AND HIS ASHES SPREAD IN THE SELWAY RIVER (A SCENIC AREA OF IDAHO)

HIS COMPUTER KEPT US HOOKED TOGETHER WORKING.  WE CRACKED THE DUDLEY CONNECTION ON HIS COMPUTER.  WE OWE A LOT TO DALE SCRIBE #1.

THIS IS THE LUMP IN THE THROAT, AND TEARS IN THE EYES TIME, AS I LOVED HIM VERY MUCH FROM CHILDHOOD.  HE WAS ALWAYS VERY CLOSE AND GOOD TO ME.

HE HAD GIVEN HIS HEART TO THE LORD AND PLANNED TO BE WITH US ALL IN HEAVEN LIKE GRANDPA AND GRANDMA PRAYED.  SO WE PRAISE THE GOOD LORD THAT ANOTHER ONE OF US IS SAFELY OVER THE GREAT DIVIDE.

DALE REALLY HELPED US ALL IN THIS EFFORT, AND IF WE WORE HATS WE COULD ALL TAKE OUR HATS OFF TO HIM.

JUST WANTED YOU ALL TO KNOW HOW IMPORTANT HE HAS BEEN IN OUR WORK.

LOVE JUNE
