Descendants of John S. Peavey
Compiled by Mark and Jackie Kulow
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN S.1 PEAVEY was born 1796 in Tuftonborough, Strafford County,
New Hampshire, and died January 18, 1850 in Exeter, Penboscot
County, Maine. He married SALLY YORK November 14, 1816 in Multonborough,
Strafford County, New Hampshire, daughter of JOHN
DAVID YORK. She was born in Tuftonborough, Strafford County, New Hampshire,
and died Bef. 1850
in Exeter, Penboscot County, Maine.
Notes for JOHN S. PEAVEY:
John S. Peavey was on the "Pension Roll of 1835" Vol. 1 for Penobscot
County, Maine. He was listed as
an invalid with his pension starting May 29, 1814 and he was placed
on the pension roll January 5, 1816.
He was also listed on the "1840 Pensioners Roll for the State of Maine".
According to this record he was
44 years old in 1840 and living in Exeter, Penobscot County, Maine.
He is not listed in the 1850 Census
so it is reasonable to assume that he died between 1840 and 1850 in
Exeter, Maine.
John S. Peavey's pension file contained the following information:
File No. 20533 The National Archives "Old War" Invalid; Service Captain Coukling
Affidavit by J. M. Harper, Surgeon Mate of the 4th Infantry stating
that John S. Peavey of Captain
Coukling's Company in the 4th Regiment, U.S. Infantry is disqualified
from performing the duty of a
soldier, in consequence of a wound in the ankle which has caused his
leg to be amputated, which he
received at Plattsburgh January 1814, in the service of the United
States, which occasioned the loss of all
Manual labor, and he in my opinion, is entitled to a discharge from
the service and a subject for a
pension. It was signed by J. M. Harper May 20, 1814.
The Pension was granted and a payment of $5.00/Month was to be paid
semi-annually commencing May
29, 1814.
Affidavit by John S. declaring that he served in the Company commanded
by Captain Coukling in the
Regiment commanded by Colonel Dunnington (4th Regiment U.S. Infantry)
and that his name was placed
on the pension roll of the State of New Hampshire from which he has
removed to Exeter, Maine. Amos
Patten was the Justice of the Peace who witnessed the affidavit.
Affidavit signed with an X by John David York, who declared under oath
that John S. Peavey was in
truth John S. Peavey based on John David's personal knowledge of him.
John David York was the father
of Sarah York, wife of John S. Peavey.
Application for transfer was submitted February 2, 1828 by John Chandler.
The transfer was granted February 5, 1828 to take effect for the semi-annual
payment due September 4,
1829, and notification sent to Hon. J. Chandler in New Hampshire.
End of information in the pension file:
Copies of the payment ledgers for monies sent to pensioners of the Revolutionary
War and the War of
1812 (Old War) showed payments to John S. Peavey in New Hampshire until
1828. Payments were then
sent to him in Maine commencing in 1829. Semi-annual payments were
sent March and September of
each year, the last payment being September of 1849. The March payment
for 1850 was not mailed. The
ledger record showed a death date of January 18, 1850. (The death date
was not visible on the microfilm
of the ledger and required extensive manipulation in the copying process
in order to recover the date
which had faded over time)
John S. Peavey was living in Tuftonborough at the time of his enlistment.
He purchased land from Joseph
L. Peavey in Tuftonborough according to the land deeds from that period.
He married Sarah York from
Tuftonborough although the ceremony took place in Multonborough. The
first Census Record for him is
in 1830 and 1840 in Exeter, Penobscot County, Maine. Neither John S.
nor Sally appear in the 1850
Census for that area. It is reasonable to assume that Sally (York)
Peavey died before John or she would
have applied for his pension. The census reports indicate that John
and Sarah had three sons and three
daughters. One daughter probably died before 1840. None of his children
applied for his pension which
probably meant that they had reached their majority and were no longer
eligible to receive the pension
funds or they had already passed away before John's death. The youngest
daughter born between
1835-1840 would have been eligible to file for the pension if she was
still living in 1850 but no records
indicate that anyone filed.
At this point Moses Thurston Peavey is the only confirmed child of John
S. Peavey and Sarah York. The
death certificate for Moses lists his parents as John S. Peavey and
Sarah York. Copies of all the
aforementioned documents are in our procession. We are trying to connect
John S. to his father in
Tuftonborough or New Durham but at this point no confirmed connection
exists. All confirmed mainline
individuals in our family tree are fully capitalized for easier recognition.
The last name of all confirmed
siblings to the mainline individuals are capitalized for the same reason.

The I.O.O.F. Lodge on last Saturday evening gave Bro. T.M. Peavey a
surprise. Immediately after the
regular routine business of the order, Judge Thos. C. Wilson of Wichita
presented Bro. Peavey with a 25
year veteran jewel in behalf of Bentley Lodge as a token of their esteem
and recognition of his long and
faithful membership of nearly 30 years in the order. Bro. Peavey is
the only charter member of Bentley
Lodge now living. There are certain honors of the order that are accorded
only to members wearing a
veteran jewel. Judge Wilson in his talk emphasized the fact that if
we have roses to spread, spread them
while we are living and not after death has called us. If you have
anything good to say of a man, say it
before he is laid to rest, for eulogies spoken when hearts are broken,
are empty things at best.
The buying of the jewel and the selection of the speaker for the occasion
was all pre-arranged without
Bro. Peavey's knowledge. After Judge Wilson closed the presentation
speech, an extraordinary banquet
was served and as the Brothers departed they wished Bro. Peavey another
thirty years of Odd
Fellowship.
