Who am I?
DISCLAIMER

The following email was recieved from Sylain Jacquet, living in France, in February of 2001. She has done interesting research on the origins of the JACQUET surname:

I am Sylvain Jacquet and I live in France in Villard-de-Lans, a small city of mountain near Grenoble. Excuse-me for my english, I am not a good student, although I am working hard. I have visited your site with interest. My family, Jacquet, is also issue (?) to Savoy. Nowadays, it's in the french department of "L'Ain" but during medieval and "renaissance" period, it was in duchy of Savoy.

This place, a small region, where is origined (?) my family is named the "Valromey". This is near "Lac du Bourget", "Aix-les-Bains" and "Geneve". It's a green valley with shorts chains of mountains (at right: "Le  Colombier" 1 500 meters of altitude; at left: "?, 1200-1300 meters)

The origin of the name "Jacquet" is very interesting. During the middle-age (?, in french Moyen-âge), a lot of persons did a religious travel ("un pélerinage") across all catholic europa to go in spain, exactly to Santiago di Compostella ("Saint Jacques de Compostelle"). Several thousand people by one year were on the ways, they came from Belgique (belgia) , Allemagne (germany), Suisse (helvetic confederation)...

That's why, it called them "les jacquets" (because St Jacques de Compostelle), and for, this name is staying. These persons were often poor, and they were hosted (?) in monaster or church on the way of St Jacques. But, near of poors, all powered (?) people did this religious travel. Certains historiers (?) claim even that Charlemagne, imperator of francs, would be the first of "jacquets".

Apparently, the majority of Jacquet are origined from old-Savoy (Dept. of Savoie, Haute-Savoie, and a part of Ain) in alps or from Jura (chain of mountains near alps). Maybe the firsts have arrest their travel before these natural barriers.

I have read that your anceters (?) were farmers or  carpenters. In France, it's a reality that the Jacquets have lived always in the land and never in cities. In my origin region, my anceters were since 14th- 15th carpenters or simply farmers. It's maybe a tradition of family (in french, "une tradition de famille")

I give you my new e-mail adress if you would me to contact: jacquetsy@wanadoo.fr
