INTRODUCTION
The Van Herwijnen family takes its name from the small Village of Herwijnen which is situated along the Waal River in the Province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. The name simply means "from Herwijnen."
The Village of Herwijnen is believed to have originally been founded in the seventh century, with the area surrounding the Village being used primarily for livestock grazing and farming. Although there was a noble family, possibly from France, who moved to the Netherlands and assumed the name of Van Herwijnen in the early 1400's, the last heir of that line to use the name was a daughter named Adelisse. She was subsequently married to a man by the name of Otto Van Haaften, and as a consequence, the noble Van Herwijnen family line came to an end.
Because the available Church and other records for Herwijnen, as well as those for the nearby villages of Haaften and Hellouw, are quite limited prior to the early 1600's, it has not been possible to take the family back beyond what is shown below.

NOTE: As can be seen in the above list of children, there were two sons named Willem. That one of them is our direct ancestor is unquestioned, however Willem's death record casts some doubt as to which one actually represents our direct line. In the death records of Herwijnen there was found an entry dated 12 July 1807, which stated that Willem Van Herwijnen, age 90, died on that date. The information was provided by his daughter, Maaijke. This suggests that our Willem was the first born Willem, but also suggests that Cornelis named two children Willem, and that both survived into adulthood.
Although this situation is not totally unknown, it is very rare. In the overwhelming number of cases, a name would only be given to another child if the first child so named had passed away. In my opinion, Willem's daughter did not know her father's exact age, but figured he must be close to 90. If she had known his exact age, the death record would probably have given the date, or at least the year of his birth, as this was commonly done in the Dutch records.
Based upon the many death records I have seen, it is not unusual for the stated ages to vary from the recorded birth and death dates. As a consequence, it is felt that the first child named Willem probably died young, and that the second child named Willem is actually our direct ancestor.
23. Dirkske Van Herwijnen.
Dirkske Van Herwijnen, the youngest known child of Aart Van Herwijnen and Maike De Weijs, was born at Herwijnen in the Province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. Peter, who was born at or near the village of Herwijnen in the Province of Gelderland, the Netherlands, was later married in the Herwijnen Dutch Reformed Church to a woman named Stijntje Van Leuwen on 21 May 1758. Stijntje apparently passed away sometime after the birth of their third child, Jenneke, as Peter married for a second time to a woman named Christina Van Steijn.
Although no record of Peter's second marriage has been found, in the death records of Peter's two daughters, Maijke and Jenneke, the parents are listed as being Peter Van Herwijnen and Christina Van Steijn. This, however, is obviously incorrect, since both Maijke and Jenneke's christening records state that Stijntje Van Leuwen was their mother. Therefore, it can only be assumed that Christina Van Steijn was their step-mother. Peter's mother, Marijke De Rouw, was listed as the witness to the christening of Peter's first child, whom he named Maijke and who is thought to have died in infancy, as well as his second child, whom he also named Maijke.

He was subsequently christened in the Dutch Reformed Church there on 19 December 1802. Cornelis emigrated during the late 1840's to America, where he settled at Holland in Ottawa County, Michigan.
According to the Ottawa County deed records, Cornelis Van Herwijnen was involved in numerous land transactions during the time he resided at Holland. Even though no deed records have been uncovered to date which show when he first purchased land there, those records that have been found indicate that between 1855 and 1890 Cornelis actively bought, sold, and loaned money on real estate in the vicinity of Holland. On one occasion he even donated four lots in the city of Holland to the trustees of the Classical Board of Benevolence.
Cornelis evidently remained single throughout his life, as he is shown on the 1850 through 1880 census returns as living alone. He was also described in a deed dated 10 April 1890 as being "not married." Cornelis Van Herwijnen died on 24 May 1892 at Holland, and was buried in the Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland Township, Ottawa County, Michigan.
139. Adriaan Van Herwijnen. *
Adriaan Van Herwijnen, the son of Aart Van Herwijnen and Eelke Verploegh, was born at Herwijnen in the Province of Gelderland, the Netherlands on 19 April 1805. He was a twin child. Adriaan was subsequently christened in the Dutch Reformed Church at Herwijnen on 21 April 1805. His twin brother, Hendrick, is believed to have died in infancy. Later, on 28 August 1841, Adriaan was married at Herwijnen to a woman named Johanna Cornelia Van Zandwijk. Johanna, who had been born at Herwijnen on 18 January 1817, was the daughter of Leendert Van Zandwijk and Elizabeth Bijl.
In 1872, Adriaan and Johanna, along with six of their children, left Herwijnen and traveled down the Waal River to the port city of Rotterdam. At Rotterdam they booked passage on a ship to "Grand Haven, Amerika." Although Adriaan had been a farmer at Herwijnen for many years, he listed his occupation upon emigrating as being a "daglooner" or day laborer.
Upon arriving in America, Adriaan and his family appear to have settled first in the township of Olive in Ottawa County, Michigan, which is situated just south of Grand Haven. On 12 August 1875, Adriaan purchased 40 acres of land in Olive Township from his sons, Govert and Willem Cornelis Van Herwijnen. The price paid was $1,000. (Note: One of these sons, Govert, had emigrated to America in 1870, while the other son, Willem Cornelis, had emigrated in the Spring of 1855 with Adriaan's sister, Grietje, and her family). Shortly after this, on 18 October 1875, Johanna Cornelia died in Olive Township. She was 68 years of age.
Two years later, on 15 December 1877, Adriaan sold this 40 acre parcel back to Willem Cornelis Van Herwijnen, and it is believed that he moved at this time to the town of Grand Haven, Michigan where he passed away on 14 December 1883. He was buried in the Lake Forest Cemetery at Grand Haven, Ottawa County, Michigan.

At the age of six, Willem Cornelis emigrated to America with his Aunt, Grietje Van Herwijnen, and her husband, Gerrit Van Arendonk, where they settled in the town of Holland in Ottawa County, Michigan. After settling in Michigan, the spelling of Willem Cornelis Van Herwijnen’s name became William Cornelius Van Herwynen.
William apparently went by the name of Cornelius, as he is found in both the 1860 and 1870 census returns under that name. He was subsequently married to a woman named Louise M. Schulz in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Norton Township in Winona County, Minnesota on 1 April 1883. The ceremony was performed by Rev. O. H. Koch. Louise, who was a native of Germany, had been born there on 22 April 1859.

She emigrated to America with her parents just prior to her seventeenth birthday. Johanna was later married at Spring Lake in Ottawa County, Michigan to a man named Klaus Bulthuis (also spelled Bolthouse) on 26 August 1882. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. James F. Zwener. Klaus, who had been born on 15 August 1856 at Kloosterburen in the Province of Groningen, the Netherlands, was a brick maker by trade. He was the son of Hendrik Bulthuis and Martje Jonker.
Although it has yet to be proven, this may have been Klaus' second marriage as the 1910 Ottawa County census records indicate that he had a daughter named Josie who was calculated to have been born in 1878, four years prior to his marriage to Johanna. Whether this was actually his daughter from a previous marriage, or whether he was simply raising someone else's child is not known at this time.
Johanna Maria subsequently died at Spring Lake, Michigan on 22 October 1920, while Klaus died there on 3 August 1934.

218. Adriaan Van Herwijnen. *
Adriaan Van Herwijnen, the son of Adriaan Van Herwijnen and Johanna Cornelia Van Zandwijk, was born on 17 January 1858 at Herwijnen in the Province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. Adriaan spent his early years at Herwijnen, but at the age of fourteen he went with his parents to Rotterdam, where they booked passage on a ship sailing to America.
Upon their arrival in America, Adriaan's parents settled at Olive in Ottawa County, Michigan, but after the death of his mother in 1875, he moved with his father to Grand Haven. Adriaan was later married at Grand Haven to a woman named Neeltje Van Der Meijden on 10 April 1884. Neeltje was the daughter of Jan Van Der Meijden and Jantje Pippel. They were married in the First Reformed Church of Grand Haven by Pastor Henry Dosker. Neeltje who was also a native of Gelderland in the Netherlands, was born there on 20 October 1864.
On 28 August 1891, Adriaan and Neeltje purchased a lot in Grand Haven from Jacobus De Spelder. This lot, which cost $300, was situated on the north side of Elliot Street, which at one time formed the north boundary of the town. Adriaan was employed for some time as a brass polisher in a foundry at Grand Haven. His job, which consisted in part of polishing the knobs on brass bedposts, was one he is known to have disliked intensely. As a consequence, he subsequently took advantage of the Homestead Act to obtain his own land to farm.
In 1908, Adriaan and his family left Grand Haven, Michigan and moved to that portion of Crook County that was eventually made a part of Campbell County, Wyoming. They took up land about seven miles northeast of Gillette, not far from where the Wyodak coal mine and power plant are situated today. It was here that Adriaan’s wife Neeltje, or Nellie as she was generally called, passed away on 13 August 1914. She was buried on 15 August 1914 in the Gillette Cemetery.
When Adriaan's eldest son, Adrian, decided to move to Topeka in Shawnee County, Kansas in the year 1920, the elder Adriaan and some of his children decided to move there also. One son, John, remained in Wyoming, eventually purchasing a ranch in Weston County. After moving to Topeka, Adriaan became a contractor by trade. He resided there until his death on 29 October 1923. He was subsequently buried there on 2 November 1923. So that he and Neeltje could be together in death, the family had Neeltje's remains exhumed from the cemetery at Gillette and had them shipped to Topeka, where they were buried alongside of Adriaan's.

Adrian grew up in the Grand Haven area, where he continued to reside until about 1908. During that year, his parents decided to move to the State of Wyoming, and he chose to accompany them.
Upon reaching Wyoming, Adrian, who was nineteen years of age at the time, jointly homesteaded 480 acres of land with his father. This land was located about seven miles northeast of the town of Gillette in Campbell County, and was used primarily for wheat farming. It was in Wyoming that Adrian met his future wife, Ruth Melissa Stone. Ruth, who had been born on 14 May 1891 at St. Joseph in Buchanan County, Missouri, was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Stone and Olive Hester Allen.
Ruth had graduated from Topeka High School in Topeka, Kansas in 1908, and following her graduation had attended the Emporia (Kansas) State Normal School for two years. Although she secured her first teaching position in the Fall of 1910 at Rossville, Kansas, in 1913 she accepted another teaching position at a one-room country school near Gillette, Wyoming. This is how Adrian and Ruth came to meet each other. They were later married by her grandfather, Edward Wesley Allen, at Topeka in Shawnee County, Kansas on 15 June 1915, and shortly thereafter, they returned to the Van Herwynen homestead near Gillette.

In 1920 they left Wyoming for good and moved to Topeka, Kansas.

His widow, Ruth, remarried in 1945 to a man named Thomas Haddock. However, this marriage apparently ended in divorce less than a year later. Adrian Van Herwynen, the eldest child of Adrian and Ruth (Stone) Van Herwynen, was born at Gillette in Campbell County, Wyoming on 4 August 1916. Later, in the Spring of 1920, young Adrian fell from a horse, badly bruising his left leg. As a consequence of this injury he developed an acute osteomyelitis infection in his leg, which plagued him for many years. Although the doctors in Sheridan, Wyoming wanted to amputate his leg, Adrian's mother would not allow it.
Adrian's family subsequently moved to Topeka in Shawnee County, Kansas that same year so that he could be placed under the care of Dr. Storrs at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital. The infection eventually traveled into his left arm, and even though he underwent numerous operations over the years, it was not until Penicillin was released for public use in 1946 that the osteo infection was finally cleared up.
Adrian attended school through the sixth grade at Topeka, Kansas, but enrolled in junior high school at Bentonville, Arkansas when the family moved there in 1928. It was while residing at Bentonville that he learned to play the trombone, and played in the school band. In 1931, Adrian's family moved to Sallisaw, Oklahoma, and it is there that he graduated from High School in 1934. In the fall of 1934 he enrolled at the University of Oklahoma at Norman.
Adrian graduated from the University of Oklahoma in June of 1938. However, because there was little work available at that time, he decided to enroll as a graduate student in education, and stayed at the University until June 1939. In that same month and year he married his first wife, Esther Markham, from Warner, Oklahoma. Shortly after their marriage, Adrian and Esther moved to California, where they settled in the San Francisco Bay area.
During the next couple of years, Adrian worked at various jobs in and around San Francisco. However, in February 1942, shortly after the U. S. became directly involved in World War II, he went to work in the Personnel Office at McClellan Air Force Base north of Sacramento. In 1944, he and Esther were divorced. There were no issue from his first marriage.
After World War II came to a close, Adrian went to work in the fire-underwriting department of Fireman's Fund Insurance Company in San Francisco. He worked for this company for approximately eight years, during which period he met his second wife, Anna Gladys Gregory, the daughter of James Gregory and Annie Kee of Ballybofey, County Donegal, Ireland. On 10 May 1952, he and Gladys were married at Carson City in Douglas County, Nevada. Gladys, who was a native of San Francisco, had been born there on 14 October 1917.
In the fall of 1955, after taking several night courses at the University of San Francisco to update his education background, Adrian accepted an eighth grade teaching position at Greenfield in Monterey County, California. He and Gladys lived at Greenfield until 1960, at which time Adrian accepted another teaching assignment at San Rafael, California. His new position was that of seventh and eighth grade science teacher at Davidson Junior High School. Residing first in the nearby community of Woodacre, Adrian and his family eventually moved into the city of San Rafael in 1966.
Over the years Adrian continued his educational pursuits and was the recipient of several National Science Foundation grants, one leading to a Master's Degree in science education at Oregon State University. Throughout his life he also loved to fish, garden, hike, and camp. In June of 1981, Adrian retired from teaching.
Adrian passed away at San Rafael in Marin County, California on 16 May 1988 at the age of 71. His widow, Gladys, remained in San Rafael for several years before moving to Guerneville to live with her daughter Kathy. Just prior to her death, Gladys moved to Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, California, where she resided in an assisted living facility. Gladys died at Santa Rosa on 12 June 2008.

342. Ruth Olive "Betty Jo" Van Herwynen. *
Ruth Olive "Betty Jo" Van Herwynen, the daughter of Adrian Van Herwynen and Ruth Stone, was born on 23 March 1919 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital at Topeka in Shawnee County, Kansas. At the time of her birth, her father, Adrian, was a patient in the same hospital, undergoing treatment for pneumonia. After her father had been released from the hospital and had recovered sufficiently enough to travel, the family took Betty back to their farm near Gillette, Wyoming where they lived. Due to a combination of unfavorable circumstances, however, the family left Wyoming for good in 1920, and moved to Topeka.
In 1923, Betty started kindergarten at Boswell Elementary School just a few blocks from where the family lived on Randolph Street. A few years later, in 1926, the family moved into a new house, also on Randolph Street, that her father had just constructed. However, shortly thereafter Betty came down with scarlet fever and the house had to be quarantined for several weeks.
In the summer of 1928, the family moved to Bentonville, Arkansas, and it was there that Betty took an interest in music. Starting out with the trumpet, she played in the school bands of both Bentonville and the neighboring community of Rogers. She eventually learned to play the piano and the guitar also. By the summer of 1931 employment opportunities in the Bentonville area had become scarce, and the family moved again. This time they settled in the vicinity of Sallisaw, Oklahoma. At Sallisaw, Betty became deeply involved in the local 4-H club, and won a number of prizes for her sewing and canning. It was here too that she graduated from High School in 1936.
Shortly after her graduation, the family packed up their belongings again and headed for California. Having settled in the San Mateo area, Betty eventually secured employment as a waitress for the Breakfast Club at the San Francisco International Airport. He eventually moved to San Leandro, California, where he married for a third time to a divorcee named Leona Irene "Ginger" (Farrow) Rutledge.
Betty continued to reside at San Mateo until her death on 20 October 1953. She was killed in an automobile accident near the town of Placerville in El Dorado County, California at the age of 34. Betty was buried in the Olivet Memorial Cemetery at Colma in San Mateo County, California alongside her parents.

371. Jack Edward MacDonald. *
Jack MacDonald, the youngest of two sons born to Alexander MacDonald and Ruth Olive "Betty Jo" Van Herwynen, was born on 12 May 1943 at Oakland in Alameda County, California. Although born in Oakland, Jack spent his early years living at San Mateo in San Mateo County, California, where he attended Laurel Grammar School.
Jack's parents were divorced in 1950, and he and his older brother, Glenn, remained with their mother. She was later killed in an automobile accident near Placerville in El Dorado County, California in 1953. Subsequent to her death, Jack and his brother moved across the San Francisco Bay to San Leandro in Alameda County, California to live with their father. He had recently remarried to a divorcee named Leona (Farrow) Rutledge, who had two sons from a previous marriage. Their names were Jim and Jerry Rutledge. While living in San Leandro, Jack attended McKinley Grammar School, Bancroft Junior High School, and San Leandro High School.
Upon completion of the eleventh grade, however, Jack moved to Wyoming to live with his great-uncle and aunt, John and Lavalette (Brant) Van Herwynen, on their cattle ranch near Newcastle, Wyoming. While residing there, he attended Newcastle High School for his senior year, and graduated in May 1960 in a class of 51 students. Since the ranch he was living on was in the country, it was necessary to travel 50 miles round trip each day by school bus to attend class.
On 17 June 1960, Jack joined the U. S. Marine Corps, undergoing boot camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. In September of 1960 he was transferred to the Naval Air Station at Memphis, Tennessee, where he attended aviation electronics school. During the following year, Jack transferred to the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California where he spent several months assigned to Headquarters Company. From there he was transferred to the Marine Barracks at Subic Bay in the Philippines. His tour of duty in the Philippines lasted for eighteen months, during which time he received word that his father had passed away. That was in November 1962. Also while in the Philippines, he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and promoted to the rank of Buck Sergeant.
After his tour in the Philippines was completed, Jack spent the remainder of his active duty in the 3rd Marine Air Wing at El Toro in Orange County, California. He was subsequently discharged at El Toro on 16 June 1964, and shortly thereafter returned to Newcastle, Wyoming, where he took a job with the U. S. Forest Service in the Elk Mountain District of the Black Hills National Forest. Jack spent about six months with the U. S. Forest Service, working out of the Teepee Work Station in the Elk Mountain District. This work station was located about ten miles east of the Wyoming state line in South Dakota. In January of 1965, Jack took a job with Schlumberger Well Surveying Corporation, where he remained until January 1967.
In January 1967, Jack began his freshman year at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming, where he majored in Agricultural Economics. He subsequently graduated in May of 1970. He then accepted a one year graduate teaching assistantship in the College of Agriculture, and spent the next year working toward a Masters degree.
While at the University, Jack met Linda Louise Harney, whom he married on 25 November 1970 at Bosler in Albany County, Wyoming. Linda, who had been born at Arlington in Middlesex County, Massachusetts on 30 August 1944, was the daughter of Edward Francis Harney and Mabel Frances Garland.
In May of 1971, Jack and Linda left Wyoming, and took a job in Alaska managing a sheep and cattle ranch for the Aleutian Livestock Corporation. This ranch was situated on Umnak Island (also called Fox Island because it was once used as a fox farm by the Russians before the United States purchased Alaska), which was located about 1,200 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska along the Aleutian Chain. There were approximately 14,000 sheep, 200 cows, and 5,000 reindeer on the ranch when they arrived. Unfortunately, due to a breach of contract they left the island in October of 1971, and returned to Wyoming.
Upon returning to Wyoming they lived for a couple of months in Newcastle, where Jack worked at the local sawmill. In December of 1971, however, he was offered a job with the American Cancer Society in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and he gladly took it. For the next eight years, Jack and Linda lived in Cheyenne, and during this period Linda returned to the University of Wyoming and obtained her Masters degree in Range Management. She also worked for the State of Wyoming, and the Bureau of Land Management. Jack left the Cancer Society after only one year and went to work for the State of Wyoming Public Lands Commission, where he remained until April 1979. It was in Cheyenne that their son, Aaron Garrett MacDonald, was born on 19 September 1976. In April 1979, Jack was offered a job as a land appraiser with the Bureau of Land Management in Salt Lake City, Utah, and he and Linda moved there that same month.
While living in Salt Lake City, Jack and Linda both worked for the Bureau of Land Management, he as an appraiser and she as a budget analyst and Range Conservationist. In May of 1982, Jack and Linda adopted a little girl from Goa, India. She had been born on 18 March 1982 at Pernem, India, and we named her Maria Melissa MacDonald.
While working as an appraiser, Jack obtained his Senior Designation in both the American Society of Appraisers and the International Right-of-Way Association. He also attended night school at the University of Utah and obtained a second Bachelors degree in Anthropology in 1984. In January 1987, Jack was promoted to the position of Chief State Appraiser, and in 1988, to the Chief, Branch of Support Services for the Bureau of Land Management in the State of Utah. Jack and Linda both retired from the Bureau of Land Management on 25 September 1999, and moved to the town of Powell in Park County, Wyoming.
