THE STONE FAMILY
OF
VIRGINIA, KENTUCKY,
INDIANA, AND BEYOND
INTRODUCTION
For over 100 years, beginning with my great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Stone, down through his son, Robert K. Stone, and including approximately thirty years of my own personal research, every attempt has been made to compile a comprehensive genealogy of our Stone family. Unfortunately, trying to trace our Stone family back beyond Spencer Stone of Virginia and Kentucky invariably ended in frustration. Even though traditional family lore claims that our Spencer Stone is somehow related to Governor William Stone of Maryland through his son, John, and also related to the Thomas Stone who signed the Declaration of Independence, no evidence that I was aware of had ever been found which confirmed this. As a consequence, I placed most of my efforts on tracing the various descending Stone family lines from Spencer Stone down to the present.
Many years ago, an entry was found in a bible that had belonged to Spencer Stone’s grandson, John L. Stone. This entry indicated that our Spencer Stone's parents were Allen Stone and Rebecca Barbee. Although I personally do not know where John Stone came up with this information, I do know that neither I, nor any other Stone family researcher that I am aware of, has ever found any evidence that would substantiate this. Based upon new information that has recently come to light, however, I am totally convinced that Allen Stone and Rebecca Barbee, if they ever even existed in the first place, are not Spencer Stone’s parents.
When I first began researching our Stone family, I did come across a query submitted by the Rev. E. A. Stone which was published in the July 1902 issue of the "Virginia Magazine of History and Biography." It specifically referred to a Thomas and Mary (Butler) Stone who came to Virginia from Maryland. They apparently had five sons whose names were Benjamin, Spencer, John, Thomas, and one whose name was not known, having died in the Revolutionary War. This Thomas Stone, who married Mary Butler, was said by some to be a great-grandson, but by others to be a great-great grandson, of Governor William Stone of Maryland. To the best of my knowledge, this was the only existing reference that pertained to a Spencer Stone in eighteenth century Virginia, which also mentioned his parentage and several siblings. If the above could be confirmed it would definitely lend credence to family tradition, and would also allow for an unbroken line back to William Stone de Twiste of Lancashire, England who was born in about 1490.
Even though all previous efforts to find a verifiable connection between our Stone family and that of Governor William Stone of Maryland had ended in failure, two new sources of information have recently come to my attention that I believe not only resolves the issue of Spencer Stone’s parentage, but appears to move our Stone family lineage a little closer to a possible connection with Governor William Stone of Maryland. Based upon this new information, it appears that the Rev. E. A. Stone’s query, though not completely accurate, was very close to the mark.
In April of 2009, Mr. William M. Stone of Lenox, Massachusetts published a book entitled "The Chronicle of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish in Colonial Virginia." This very well documented reference substantiates the relationship between this Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish and his son, Thomas Stone, who married Mary Butler. It also provides information regarding Thomas Stone and Mary Butler’s children, including our Spencer Stone.
The other reference which helped solidify in my mind that Spencer Stone was indeed the son of Thomas Stone and Mary Butler was the book published in 2001 by the late John P. Alcock entitled "Fauquier Families - Volume two (supplement)." This reference included tithing and personal property tax lists, some of which were found among unrecorded "loose papers" in the basement of the Fauquier County Courthouse in 1996. Since so many records from early Virginia have been lost or destroyed, it was very fortunate that these tithing and tax records were uncovered.
On page two, column one, of the 1778 List of Tithes taken by William Pickett for the Lower District of Leeds Parish in Fauquier County, Virginia, Thomas Stone, Sr. (husband of Mary Butler) and his youngest son, James Stone, were residing on the same property, and were assessed two tithes. Thomas Stone, Jr. and Spencer Stone were residing on lands adjoining Thomas Stone, Sr. and were assessed one tithe each. Thomas Stone, Sr.’s son, Benjamin Stone, who was assessed one tithe, is listed in column two of page two, indicating that he probably resided some distance away. In my opinion, this List of Tithes definitely indicates a connection between our Spencer Stone and the other Stone’s living in Leeds Parish. Additional support for this being our Spencer Stone and his family comes from the fact that a Thomas Smith and Scarlet Smith were also residing on lands adjoining those of Thomas Stone, Sr. and Mary Butler. These, of course, were Spencer Stone’s future father-in-law and brother-in-law.
In light of the newly obtained information cited above, There is no longer any doubt in my mind that our Spencer Stone was the son of Thomas Stone and Mary Butler, and the grandson of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish in Prince William County, Virginia. However, until future research yields sufficient evidence to verify beyond reasonable doubt who the parents of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish were, this genealogy will begin with Spencer Stone’s grandfather, Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish, representing the earliest known progenitor of our branch of the Stone family.
NOTE: Although I have made every effort to be as accurate as possible in compiling this genealogy, I will be the first to acknowledge that there are undoubtedly some errors, as well as information that conflicts with what other researchers may have in their possession. Although I feel very confident that the spouses and parent-child relationships shown in this genealogy are quite accurate, in some cases the information I obtained, whether from individuals or from official records, yielded different spellings of names, different dates of birth, marriage, and death, and different places where these events happened. As such, the potential for conflicting data is definitely present.
Fortunately, many conflicting dates were easily straightened out by simply rechecking the source material or official records. Quite a few marriage dates varied simply because some researchers used the date of bond or license instead of the actual marriage date. Death dates also varied in that the date of burial was sometimes used instead of the actual death date. In those cases where I was unable to verify which of two dates was correct, I generally went with the one that referenced the most credible source material.
With respect to the location at which an event took place, there were many cases when it was not possible to find any record giving the exact location that a birth, marriage or death took place. Because I feel quite strongly that dates should always be accompanied by places, if for no other reason than to aid future research, I made a number of assumptions regarding location based upon available information. For instance, if a family is found in the Fayette County, Indiana census records for 1840 and 1850, and they also show up in the deed and tax records of that county for the same period, I did not feel that it was unreasonable to assume that any children they had during this period were probably also born in Fayette County. In some cases, however, my comfort level with assuming a possible location was limited to a state only. It should also be mentioned that only those individuals having the Stone surname are covered in each succeeding generation.

THE STONE FAMILY
OF
VIRGINIA, KENTUCKY, INDIANA, AND BEYOND
GENERATION ONE
1. Thomas Stone.
Thomas Stone, sometimes referred to as Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish, is the earliest known ancestor of our Stone family to have been positively identified to date. He is believed to have been born in Maryland in about 1698/1699. Although Thomas is known to have been married in Virginia, probably in Stafford County, the name of his wife has not been determined.
Thomas, who was a farmer by trade, died in Hamilton Parish in Prince William County, Virginia in 1756. The area in which Thomas Stone died was later incorporated into Fauquier County, Virginia in 1759. Although Thomas Stone’s will has apparently been lost or destroyed, his son, John, who had been named Executor of his will, was granted an Administrative Bond by the Prince William County Court on 23 August 1756. Three months later, on 23 November 1756, an inventory and appraisement of Thomas Stone’s estate was submitted to the Prince William County Court.
Deed and probate records indicate that after Thomas Stone passed away his property was divided up between his three sons; Thomas, William, and John. Although there is some evidence to suggest that Thomas Stone and his wife may have also had two daughters, this has not been verified beyond doubt and requires additional research.

GENERATION TWO
NOTE: Only the author's pedigree ancestor and known siblings are covered in this generation.
2. Thomas Stone.
Thomas Stone, the eldest son of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish, is believed to have been born in about 1721/1722 in Stafford County, Virginia. He was later married in Prince William County, Virginia to a woman named Mary Butler. Mary is believed to have also been a native of Stafford County, Virginia. Verification that Thomas Stone was married to Mary Butler was found in Sheriff John Crump’s Account Book for Hamilton Parish in Prince William County, Virginia for the period 1751-1755.
After their marriage, Thomas and Mary resided in that portion of Prince William County that was later formed into Fauquier County, Virginia in 1759. Although many Fauquier County records have been lost or destroyed, a number of tax lists where found among some unrecorded "loose papers" in the basement of the Fauquier County Courthouse in 1996. These tax lists were subsequently published by the late John P. Alcock in 2001. In column one of page two of the 1778 List of Tithes taken by William Pickett for the Lower District of Leeds Parish, Thomas Stone, shown as Thomas Stone, Sr. on the list, and his youngest son, James Stone, were residing on the same farm, while Thomas Stone, Jr. and Spencer Stone were residing on adjoining lands. Thomas Stone, Sr.’s son, Benjamin Stone, was listed in column two of page two, indicating that he was probably living some distance away.
Although Mary (Butler) Stone appears to have died prior to Thomas, the actual date of her death is not known. She is believed, however, to have died in Fauquier County, Virginia. Thomas Stone, on the other hand, is believed to have died in Fauquier County in 1788.

3. William Stone.
William Stone, the son of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish, is believed to have been born in about 1725 in Stafford County, Virginia. He was later married in about 1747 in Prince William County, Virginia to a woman named Hannah Conway. Verification that William Stone was married to Hannah Conway was found in Sheriff John Crump’s Account Book for Hamilton Parish in Prince William County, Virginia for the period 1751-1755.
On 3 September 1758, William applied for a grant of 320 acres of land on Flat Creek in Granville County, North Carolina, which he received during the month of February 1762. In March of 1770, William apparently sold this property, and he and his family moved west into Surry County, North Carolina. On 22 December 1778, William and Hannah applied for a grant of 280 acres of land on Belews Creek in Surry County, which he obtained in 1780.
On 8 February 1786, William and Hannah sold their Surry County property and moved to Randolph County, North Carolina, where they acquired land on Caraway Creek. William Stone subsequently died in about 1788/1789 in Randolph County, North Carolina, while Hannah died there in 1792.

4. John Stone.
John Stone, the son of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish, is believed to have been born in about 1727 in Stafford County, Virginia. He was later married in about 1748 in Prince William County, Virginia to a woman named Mildredge "Milly" Corder. Milly was the daughter of John Corder. Verification that John Stone was married to a Miss. Corder was found in Sheriff John Crump’s Account Book for Hamilton Parish in Prince William County, Virginia for the period 1751-1755.
On 12 December 1775, John and Milly purchased 200 acres of land in that portion of Ninety-Six District, South Carolina that was later formed into Laurens County, South Carolina in 1785. John and Milly later received a grant from the state of South Carolina for 442 acres of land along the Enoree River in Laurens County on 6 June 1791.
John and Milly Stone appear to have resided in Laurens County, South Carolina for the remainder of their lives. John died in Laurens County in 1800. Although John wrote his will on 25 January 1797 he later modified this will on 9 March 1799, and crossed out all references to his son John, Jr., replacing John, Jr.’s name with that of his son, Lewis. John’s last will and testament was subsequently probated before the Laurens County Court on 17 March 1800. Milly, on the other hand, appears to have died in Laurens County in 1813.
After John passed away, Milly was found residing with her son Lewis in the 1800 census enumeration.

GENERATION THREE
NOTE: Only the author's pedigree ancestor and known siblings are covered in this generation.
5. Thomas Stone.
Thomas Stone, the son of Thomas Stone and Mary Butler, was born in about 1743 in Prince William County, Virginia. That Thomas is the eldest son of Thomas and Mary is based upon an affidavit given by a Mr. Richard Roper which was filed in Mercer County, Kentucky Order Book "P." This affidavit states:
"Proof given by Richard Roper that Thomas Stone was the eldest brother of Baylis Stone and heir at law of Bayles Stone who belonged to the Army of the Revolution and died in service an unmarried man."
Thomas Stone was apparently married twice during his life. He married first to a woman named Elizabeth "Betty" Jackman in about 1763/1764 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Elizabeth, who was also a native of Virginia, was the daughter of Thomas Jackman and Hester Wright. She was referred to as "Betty Stone" in her father’s will, which had been written on 15 March 1776, and probated on 25 March 1776 in Fauquier County, Virginia.
In early 1777, Thomas enlisted in the Virginia Continental Line to fight in the Revolutionary War, serving in both the 14th and the 10th Regiments. In column one of page two of the 1778 List of Tithes taken by William Pickett for the Lower District of Leeds Parish, Thomas Stone, shown as Thomas Stone, Jr. on the list, was residing next door to his father, Thomas Stone, Sr. While home on leave from the War in 1779, Thomas received a Fairfax land grant for 320 acres in Fauquier County, Virginia.
Sometime prior to 1790, Thomas and Elizabeth left Virginia and moved to Kentucky, where they appear to have spent a short time in Lincoln County, before settling permanently in Mercer County. Although Elizabeth is known to have died in Mercer County, Kentucky, the actual date of her death has not been determined.
On 19 August 1795, Thomas married for a second time to a widow named Ann Bennett in Mercer County, Kentucky. There were no issue from Thomas Stone’s second marriage. Thomas Stone evidently died in 1829 in Mercer County, Kentucky. His will, which had been written during the month of March 1829, was subsequently probated during the month of September 1829. Ann, on the other hand, died in Mercer County in 1832. Her will was written during the month of September 1832, and probated during the month of December of that same year.
On 26 October 1844, Parazade (Stone) Corder conveyed her 1/6 part of the estate left to her by her father, Thomas Stone, to her daughter, Elizabeth (Corder) Krumholtz. This act took place before John A. McHugh, a notary, in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Although Parazade Stone is the only child of Thomas and Elizabeth Stone to have been positively identified to date, her 1/6 share of her father’s estate suggests that Thomas and Elizabeth may have had as many as six children. Based upon my research in Kentucky, however, I believe Thomas and Elizabeth may have also had sons named Nimrod, Elisha, and Bailess. As a consequence, I have opted to include these three sons as children of Thomas and Elizabeth. Unfortunately, the names of other possible children have not been determined.
The exact order of birth of the below listed children is not known.

6. Ann Stone.
Ann Stone, the daughter of Thomas Stone and Mary Butler, is believed to have been born in about 1744/1745 in Prince William County, Virginia. She was later married on 3 February 1761 in Fauquier County, Virginia to a man named William Moffett. William, who was a Baptist Minister, was the son of Gabriel Moffett and Mary Helm.
In about 1796, William and Ann apparently moved into the state of Kentucky, where they settled in Woodford County. No additional information has been found concerning this couple.
Issue: (Surname Moffett)
Unknown
7. Benjamin Stone.
Benjamin Stone, often referred to as Rev. Benjamin Stone, is the son of Thomas Stone and Mary Butler. He is believed to have been born in about 1747/1748 in Prince William County, Virginia. (Note: Although Benjamin Stone is often shown to have been born in 1743, or 26 September 1743, the origin of these dates cannot be verified to my satisfaction). Benjamin was later married in Fauquier County, Virginia to a woman named Anna Asbury. According to her tombstone, Anna was born in 1748, possibly in Stafford County, Virginia. She was the daughter of George and Hannah Asbury.
Benjamin was shown on the 1777 List of Tithes taken by John Moffett for the Lower District of Leeds Parish, and again on page two of the 1778 List of Tithes taken by William Pickett for the Lower District of Leeds Parish. During the Revolutionary War, Benjamin served as a sergeant in the Culpeper County, Virginia Minute Men, and then in the 4th, 6th, and 9th Companies under General George Washington during the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge. In 1779-1782, he was with the 2nd South Carolina Regiment.
Shortly after the Revolutionary War, Benjamin and his family moved to Hampshire County, Virginia (now within West Virginia). While in Hampshire County, Benjamin was instrumental in organizing the New River Baptist Church and the Crooked Run Baptist Church. In 1794, however, Benjamin was "called" to Uniontown in Fayette County, Pennsylvania to take over the Bethel Baptist Church. Later, on 22 September 1808, Benjamin preached the introductory sermon at the Redstone Baptist Association at Uniontown. In 1818, after serving as a Baptist Minister in Pennsylvania for nearly twenty-four years, Benjamin and Anna, along with several of their children, moved west into Ohio, where they settled in Harrison County.
Benjamin and Anna are both said to have died in Harrison County, Ohio in 1833. Although the exact date of Anna’s death is not known, Benjamin is reported to have died on 4 June 1833 at Cadiz, Ohio. Both were subsequently buried in the Stone Cemetery in Green Township.
The exact order of birth of all of Benjamin and Anna’s children is not known.

She was later married in about 1768 in Fauquier County, Virginia to a man named William Dullin (also written Dulin and Duling). William, who had been born in about 1747 in Prince William County, Virginia, was the son of William Dullin and Clemence Ball.
Elizabeth is believed to have died in about 1783/1784 in Fauquier County, Virginia, possibly due to complications associated with childbirth. After Elizabeth passed away, William apparently married for a second time, also in Fauquier County, Virginia, to a woman named Elizabeth Glasscock. William subsequently died in 1819 in Fauquier County.

9. Spencer Stone.
Spencer Stone, the son of Thomas Stone and Mary Butler, was born on 3 June 1755 in Prince William County, Virginia. In about 1777/1778, Spencer is believed to have been married in Culpeper County, Virginia to his first wife, Nancy "Sally" Smith. Sally was the daughter of Thomas Smith of Ireland, and his wife, Mary Jackman. "Sally" Smith was also a native of Virginia, having been born on 9 September 1757 in Fauquier County.
Spencer Stone was found on page two of the 1778 List of Tithes taken by William Pickett for the Lower District of Leeds Parish, residing next door to his father, Thomas Stone, Sr., and his brother Thomas Stone, Jr. During the Revolutionary War, Spencer Stone served as a Private in Captain Samuel Scott's Company of the Lincoln County, Virginia Militia (Lincoln County is now part of Kentucky), and for his service he received a land grant from Patrick Henry, the Governor of Virginia. Although this land grant, which consisted of 100 acres of land along the Dix River in Lincoln County, Kentucky, was authorized on 28 June 1780, it was not surveyed until 24 April 1783.
According to the Lincoln County Court records, Spencer petitioned the Court on 15 October 1805 for permission to construct a water grist mill on this property. The Court ordered the Sheriff to visit the site and ascertain if the construction would cause any damages. On 11 November 1805, the Sheriff reported that he did not feel any damages would occur, and Spencer was allowed to build his grist mill.
Spencer and Sally resided in Lincoln County, Kentucky for more than thirty years prior to Sally’s death on 3 January 1813. She was the mother of nine children with Spencer, all of which having been born in Lincoln County except for their first child, John Thomas Stone.
After the death of his first wife, Spencer Stone remained in Lincoln County for several years. In the fall of 1815, however, he moved to Scott County, Kentucky where his son, Elias Barbee, had settled sometime earlier. According to the records of the Dry Run Baptist Church in Scott County, Spencer Stone was admitted into membership there on the third Saturday in December 1815, and remained with that church until October of 1817. During the following year, 1818, Spencer moved back to Lincoln County, where he remained until his death.
Shortly before leaving Scott County, however, Spencer married for a second time to Anna (Christy) Lindsay, the daughter of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, and the widow of John Valentine Lindsay. Anna (Christy) Lindsay was the mother of Catherine Houston Lindsay who had married Spencer's son, Elias, in Scott County in about 1814. There were no issue from Spencer's second marriage.
Although some of Spencer's children eventually moved to Indiana and other parts of Kentucky, he and his wife remained in Lincoln County. Spencer Stone subsequently died on 1 January 1838 in that part of Lincoln County that was later made a part of Boyle County in 1842. Shortly after Spencer passed away, Anna moved to Fayette County, Indiana to be closer to some of her children from her previous marriage to John Lindsay. It is believed that she died there in about 1844.

10. Bayles Stone.
Bayles Stone (also written Baylis Stone), the son of Thomas Stone and Mary Butler, is believed to have been born in about 1757 in Prince William County, Virginia. During the Revolutionary War, Bayles enlisted in the 11th Virginia Regiment of Sharpshooters under the command of Colonel Daniel Morgan.
During the months of September and October 1777, the 11th Regiment fought in both the Battle of Freeman’s Farm and the Battle of Bemis Heights (collectively called the Battles of Saratoga). By November 1777, however, military documents indicate that Bayles had become ill. Bayles, who was not married, subsequently died without issue in the state of New York on 2 December 1777.
11. James Stone.
James Stone, the youngest son of Thomas Stone and Mary Butler, is believed to have been born in about 1760 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He was later married on 25 December 1781 in Fauquier County, Virginia to a woman named Jane Ellis. Jane was also a native of Virginia.
James Stone was found on page two of the 1778 List of Tithes taken by William Pickett for the Lower District of Leeds Parish, residing on the same land as his father, Thomas Stone, Sr. Several years after their marriage, James and Jane moved west into Kentucky, where they settled in Mercer County near his brother, Thomas Stone, and his wife, Elizabeth Jackman. James Stone, who was a miller and distiller by trade, died in 1828 in Mercer County, Kentucky. His will, which had been written on 8 May 1826, was subsequently submitted for probate before the June 1828 session of the Mercer County Court. Jane, on the other hand, died in Mercer County on 2 July 1832.
Although James Stone named all of his children in his will, their names were also provided in an affidavit which was given by a Mr. James Taylor, and filed in Mercer County Order Book "P." The exact order of birth of all of the below listed children is not known.

GENERATION FOUR
NOTE: Only the descendants of Spencer Stone and Nancy "Sally" Smith are covered in this and succeeding generations at this time.
50. John Thomas Stone.
John Stone, the son of Spencer Stone and his first wife, Nancy "Sally" Smith, was born on 24 March 1779, possibly in Culpeper County, Virginia. He was later married on 12 October 1799 to a woman named Sally Gains in Mercer County, Kentucky. Sally, who had been born on 12 March 1782 in Kentucky, was the daughter of William Gains and Ann Strother. Shortly after their marriage, John and Sally settled on a farm in Lincoln County, Kentucky, where they appear to have resided for the remainder of their lives.
John, who died in Lincoln County, Kentucky on 1 February 1859, was subsequently buried in the Hopton Cemetery on the Crab Orchard Road in Lincoln County. His will, which was written on 26 May 1857, was submitted for probate before the Lincoln County Court on 7 February 1859. Sally, on the other hand, died in Boyle County, Kentucky on 16 June 1861. She was residing with her daughter, Sarah (Stone) Boling, at the time.
In John's will, he specifically mentions having a grandson named John W. Stone. Because the grandchildren of John Thomas Stone, Sr. have been fairly well documented, there appears to be only two possibilities which might account for John W. Stone. One being that he was the son of the (male) child listed as number 79 below, and two, that he was the first child of John Thomas Stone, Jr. and Mary Baughman and died prior to 1860. At the present time, however, little weight is given to the first possibility, and I know of no way to verify the second possibility. As a consequence, no additional information will be presented regarding John W. Stone.

55. Elias Barbee Stone.
Elias Barbee Stone, the sixth of nine children born to Spencer Stone and Nancy "Sally" Smith, was born on 20 February 1790 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. He was later married in Scott County, Kentucky to Catherine Houston Lindsay, the daughter of John Valentine Lindsay and Anna Christy. Although no record of their marriage has been found to date, it is thought to have taken place in about 1812/13. Catherine, who was also a native of Kentucky, had been born on 17 September 1795 in Scott County.
After their marriage, Elias and Catherine appear to have remained in Scott County until about 1818, at which time they moved to Lincoln County. Elias, who was a farmer and miller by trade, settled on a small farm in Lincoln County that was situated on Hanging Fork Creek, a branch of the Dix River. He and Catherine resided on this farm for approximately four years. Sometime in 1822, however, Elias and his family moved to Indiana, settling first in Fayette County, and then later in Wabash County.
While residing in Fayette County, Elias Stone organized the "Church of Christ" Meeting on Sanes Creek. The first meeting was held on 4 July 1829, but it was not until 1831 that a building was constructed on ground that he had given for that purpose. This church, which was later called the "Orange Christian Church," is the oldest Christian Church in the State of Indiana.
On 29 October 1834, Elias Stone obtained a tract of land in Liberty Township in Wabash County, Indiana which he subsequently turned over to his son, John L. Stone. During the following year, Elias helped his son clear part of this tract, but soon returned to Fayette County. Elias and his wife eventually did move to Wabash County, however, but not until about 1850.
Both Elias Barbee Stone and Catherine Lindsay passed away in Wabash County, Indiana. Elias died there on 27 July 1870, while Catherine died on 21 August 1873 at the home of her nephew, Hiram Lindsay, in Liberty Township. They were both buried in the Boundary Line Church Cemetery near La Fontaine. This cemetery, which was situated upon land that Elias had acquired for such a purpose, was originally established as a private burying ground in 1863. Its use has subsequently been opened to the general public, however.

56. Lucinda Stone.
Lucinda Stone, the daughter of Spencer Stone and his first wife, Nancy "Sally" Smith, was born on 15 June 1792 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Lucinda was apparently married twice during her life. She married her first husband, Nimrod McCoy, in Lincoln County on 9 July 1810. Nimrod evidently died within a few years of their marriage, as Lucinda married for a second time, also in Kentucky, to a man named George A. Foreman in about 1814. George, who had been born on 11 February 1789 in Lincoln County, was the son of David Foreman and Elizabeth Horine.
Shortly after their marriage, George and Lucinda moved to Highland County, Ohio, where they settled along White Oak Creek near the present town of Buford in Clay Township. Although George was primarily a farmer by trade, he also operated a distillery for a number of years, furnishing whiskey to John Florence's tavern. George and Lucinda resided in Highland County for about thirty years, and it was there that all of their children were born.
Just prior to 1850, George and Lucinda moved west into the State of Illinois, however, where they settled in the vicinity of Detroit in Pike County. George subsequently died on 20 September 1873 in Pike County, while Lucinda died there on 1 January 1874.

57. Caleb M. Stone.
Caleb Stone, the son of Spencer Stone and his first wife, Nancy "Sally" Smith, was born in about 1798 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Based upon available records, Caleb appears to have been married three times during his life. Although the identity of Caleb's first wife has not been determined, it is known that he was married in Kentucky in about 1818/19, as his first daughter was born prior to the 1820 census enumeration.
After his first wife passed away, Caleb married for a second time, also in Kentucky, to a woman named Margaret Masten. Margaret was from Owen County, Kentucky. After Margaret's passing, Caleb married for a third time to a woman named Mary Butler. They were married on 31 March 1839 in Scott County, Kentucky. Mary, who was also a native of Kentucky, was calculated to have been born there in 1820.
Although Caleb was a member of the Stamping Ground Baptist Church in Scott County, he was excluded from membership during the month of December 1840 for "intemperance and profane swearing." During the month of November 1874, however, Caleb asked to be reinstated, which he was, claiming that he did not have long to live. Caleb, who was a wagon maker by trade, died in Scott County during the month of November 1875. His will, which was written during the month of September 1872, was probated in Scott County on 1 February 1876.
The offspring listed below as (male) or (female) were abstracted from available pre-1850 census records. Because it has not been possible to positively identify any of these children, it is not known at this time if they are all Caleb's. The fact that only Daniel and Fabrishus show up on the 1850 census suggests that several may have died at an early age, or they were living with someone else.

Nancy Stone, the daughter of Thomas Allen Stone and Dorcas Montgomery, was born in 1819 in Gibson County, Indiana. She was later married on 5 December 1839 in Gibson County to a man named Jesse Marvel Knowles. Jesse, who had been born on 18 August 1816 in Indiana, was the son of Jesse Marvel Knowles, Sr. and Elizabeth Reed.
Nancy and Jesse moved from Gibson County to Menard County, Illinois in about 1848. In about 1867, however, they moved to Kansas where they resided for a short time in Greenwood County, but later settled in Wilson County. Jesse died in Wilson County, Kansas during the month of December 1868. Nancy, on the other hand, died on 3 April 1871 at Fredonia in Wilson County. (Note: Even though the Wilson County, Kansas probate records indicate that Nancy's heirs filed for probate of her estate on 1 May 1870, this date is believed to be incorrect. Because Nancy Knowles was listed as head of household on 21 July 1870 when the 1870 census of Wilson County, Kansas was enumerated, she could not have been deceased on 1 May 1870 when her heirs filed for probate. As such, Nancy's death date of 3 April 1871 is believed to be accurate).

Matilda Stone, the daughter of Smith Thomas Stone and Mary "Polly" Montgomery, was calculated to have been born in Garrard County, Kentucky in 1810. She was later married in Garrard County by a marriage bond dated 26 February 1827 to a man named Robert M. Davis. Note: On the 1870 census of Kentucky Caleb and Mary (Butler) Stone are listed with their two sons, John C. Breckenridge and Blackburn F. "Doc" Stone. Listed immediately below Caleb's family was an F. C. Stone, 26, Gunsmith, who I believe is Fabrishus. Listed with F. C. Stone, 26, was a woman named Ellen, 32, a son Robert, 3, and a son James, 1. On the 1880 census, however, Mary, 60, is listed with her son John C. Breckenridge, and Robert, 13, who is also listed as a son. In the following entry, Fabrishus, 36, is shown with a wife named Priscilla, 25, and a daughter named Annie, 10.
Unfortunately, it has not been possible to determine if F. C. Stone is actually Fabrishus, although I strongly believe he is. It has also proven to be impossible to verify whether or not Ellen was a first wife and Robert and James where children from this marriage, or if she was a widowed sister-in-law who was simply listed under F. C. Stone. It could also be that Robert and James were actually children of Caleb and Mary, as inferred by the 1880 census. Because it has not been possible to verify how these individuals are related, I have opted not to list Robert and James in this genealogy until such time as more information can be obtained. (This Robert may be the Robert Stone who married Paulina Woolmus in Scott County, Kentucky on 30 December 1887).
