THE ODELL/ODLE FAMILY OF MARYLAND, OHIO, AND INDIANA
GENERATION ONE
1. Thomas Odell.
Thomas Odell, the earliest known progenitor of our Odell family, is thought to have been born in about 1660 in England. Although the actual date that Thomas immigrated into the Province of Maryland is not known, he may possibly have arrived there as early as 1682. Thomas was later married during the month of April 1691, most likely in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, to a widow named Sarah (Ridgely) Brewer. Sarah, who is thought to have been born in about 1664 in Anne Arundel County, was the widow of John Brewer, and the daughter of Henry Ridgely and Elizabeth Howard.
After their marriage, Thomas and Sarah resided within the boundaries of All Hallows Parish in Anne Arundel County. During the years 1694 through 1698, Thomas was described in various Anne Arundel County documents as being one of the three County Coroners, as being a militia officer, and as being one of Her Majesties Justices for that County.
On 6 April 1700, Thomas purchased two tracts of land from James Murray which were located in Baltimore County, Maryland. These tracts were called "Athel," which consisted of 617 acres, and "Murray's Addition," which consisted of 89 acres. Both of these tracts were situated north of the Patapsco River on what was called "Hunting Ridge." On 25 March 1701, Thomas bought another tract of land from a man named Robert Bradley. This tract, which consisted of 800 acres, was located in Prince George's County, Maryland and was called "Darnall's Grove." It was situated on the west side of the Patuxent River and Collington's Branch of the Patuxent River, near the present town of Upper Marlborough.
Shortly after Thomas purchased "Darnall's Grove," he and his family moved to Prince George's County, where they settled in Queen Anne's Parish. Thomas and his father-in-law, Henry Ridgely, were later elected Vestrymen of Queen Anne's Parish at an assembly held in the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on 9 April 1705. During the following year, 1706, Thomas was made a Justice of the Prince George's County Court, and was also appointed a Commissioner for the Upper Marlborough District. He was later succeeded as a Vestryman for Queen Anne's Parish on 29 March 1714. Four years later, on 7 May 1718, he sold a portion of the tract called "Athel," and all of "Murray's Addition" to George Bailey for 100 pounds.
Thomas Odell died in Prince George's County in 1722. His will, which had been written on 29 April 1717, was subsequently probated before the Prince George's County Court on 11 April 1722. In his will, Thomas named his wife, Sarah, as Executrix. Sarah died in 1727, also in Prince George's County, Maryland.

GENERATION TWO
NOTE: Only the author's pedigree ancestor and known siblings are covered in this generation.
2. Thomas Odell.
Thomas Odell, the eldest son of Thomas Odell and Sarah (Ridgely) Brewer, was born in All Hallows Parish in Anne Arundel County, Maryland on 7 January 1692/93. He was later married in Maryland to a woman named Margaret Beall. Although no record of their marriage has been found, it most likely took place in about 1712 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Margaret, who was born in about 1694 in Maryland, was the daughter of James Bell (Beall) and Sarah Pearce. She was also the sister of the Sarah Beall who married Thomas Odell's brother, Rignall.
Thomas and Margaret probably resided in Prince George's County, Maryland until at least 1755, the year that Margaret's mother, Sarah (Pearce) Beall Haswell, wrote her will. This will, which was submitted for probate on 28 November 1761, left Margaret a small legacy of five shillings. Thomas and Margaret were not residing in Maryland at the time of her mother's death in 1761, however, as they appear to have moved to South Carolina by 1758.
Thomas, as well as his son, John, are found in the land records of South Carolina as owning plantations in the original Berkeley County. Thomas had a plantation surveyed for him on 18 December 1758, which was situated on Ninety-Six Creek and contained 400 acres. Although it is believed that Thomas died in South Carolina in about 1763, the actual date of Margaret's death has not been determined. She too is believed to have died in South Carolina, however.

After Rignall passed away, Sarah married for a second time, also in Maryland, to a man named Thomas Prather, Jr. Thomas was the son of Thomas Prather, Sr. and Martha Sprigg. Sarah was later mentioned in the will of her mother, Sarah (Pearce) Beall Haswell. GENERATION THREE
NOTE: Only the author's pedigree ancestor and known siblings, and those other family members (cousins) who have the Odell / Odle surname, are covered in this generation.
9. William Odell.
William Odell, the son of Thomas Odell and Margaret Beall, is believed to have been born in about 1714 in Prince George's County, Maryland. His wife's name was named Elizabeth, and according to a number of sources, she was Elizabeth Talbot. The fact that William and his wife named a son, Talbot Odell, obviously lends some support to this argument.
After their marriage, William and Elizabeth apparently settled near Randallstown in Baltimore County, Maryland, where they acquired several tracts of land. One of these tracts was "Arnolds Choice," which they purchased on 19 June 1742 from Anthony and Margaret Arnold. William died intestate in Baltimore County, Maryland in late 1748, and these tracts appear to have been inherited by his oldest son, John, according to old English law. What ever became of Elizabeth has not been determined.
On 7 February 1749, an inventory of William’s estate was provided to the Baltimore County Court. The appraisement was undertaken by John Stinchcomb and Joshua Owings. Elizabeth, who had been appointed Administratrix of William’s estate, subsequently filed an accounting of the estate with the Office of the Register of Wills in Baltimore City on 30 May 1750. In this accounting she named and gave the ages of all of William’s and her children.

After Jacob passed away, Sarah moved with her son, Jacob, Jr., to the Ninety-Six District of South Carolina, where she appears to have resided until her death. Sarah and Jacob, Jr. had two plantations, one containing approximately 140 acres, and another containing approximately 150 acres, surveyed for them in the original Berkeley County of South Carolina on 11 June 1769 and 10 August 1770, respectively.

Martha, who had been born on 17 March 1738 in Queen Anne's Parish, was the daughter of Richard Duckett and Elizabeth Williams.
Because no will has been found for Rignall, it appears that he probably died intestate in Prince George's County in about 1763. His widow, Martha, subsequently married for a second time, also in Queen Anne's Parish, to a man named Edward Hall on 15 June 1764.

Ann Odell, believed to be a daughter of Rignall Odell and Sarah Beall, was born in Prince George's County, Maryland. She was later married in Maryland to a man named Jeremiah Prather. Jeremiah, who was born on 21 July 1732 (possibly 1731) in Queen Anne's Parish in Prince George's County, Maryland, was the son of John Smith Prather and Elizabeth Nuthall.
Jeremiah had served in the French and Indian War, and with General Forbes in the expedition against Fort Duquesne. When his father died, Jeremiah inherited two plantations, one called "Deer Park" and the other "Bear Garden Enlarged." These lands were situated in that part of Frederick County that was later formed into Montgomery County, Maryland in 1776.
Jeremiah subsequently died on 30 August 1807 in Fayette County, Kentucky. His will, which was written on 9 September 1806, was probated during the November 1807 Court in Fayette County. It is not known at this time when or where Ann died.

37. Mary Odell.
Mary Odell, the daughter of William Odell and Elizabeth Talbot, was born in about 1736 in Maryland. Although it is not know if Mary ever married, she is known to have had a child out of wedlock with a man named Philip Norwood. In November 1754, the Baltimore County Court fined both Philip Norwood and Mary Odell 30 shillings apiece for "bastardizing".
Although the identity of this child has not been verified, there is a possibility that it was the Philip Norwood who was born in 1755 in Baltimore County, Maryland, and later moved to Fleming County, Kentucky, where he died in 1807.
38. John Odell.
John Odell, the son of William Odell and Elizabeth Talbot, was born on 24 September 1737 in Maryland. He was later married in Maryland to a woman named Providence Baker.
According to available deed records, on 9 January 1770 John leased 14.5 acres of land in Baltimore County from John and Ruth Hurd for 13 pounds. John subsequently died on 14 February 1818 in Baltimore County, Maryland. His will, which had been written on 9 January 1817, was admitted for probate before the Baltimore County Court on 18 February 1818.

39. William Odell.
William Odell, the son of William Odell and Elizabeth Talbot, was born in about 1740 in Baltimore County, Maryland. He was later married to a woman named Asenath Owings, the daughter of John Owings and his second wife, Asenath. Although no record of their marriage has been found, it is thought to have taken place in about 1762 in Baltimore County. Asenath, who was also a native of Baltimore County, is believed to have been born there in about 1744.
This William Odell is believed to be the same William Odell who was later found in the deed records of Baltimore County leasing 50 acres of land from a man named Walter Smith on 27 September 1765. This same William also leased another 60 acres of land from Mr. Smith on 11 February 1767. William, who was described in the documents as being a planter and farmer, was to build a dwelling and plant a 200 tree orchard on the earlier lease.
William and Asenath eventually left Maryland and moved into the State of Virginia, where according to the 1782-1787 list of Virginia taxpayers, they were residing in Hampshire County (now part of West Virginia). On 12 August 1783, William purchased two tracts of land in Hampshire County from a man named John Kyger. These tracts, consisting of 453 total acres, were situated along Chestnut Ridge on Allegheny Mountain. William and Asenath later sold these tracts on 20 October 1806, with one going to James and Benjamin Dawson, and the other to Philip Goode.
Shortly after this, William and his family moved to the State of Ohio where they settled in Ross County. William and his son, Caleb, purchased 80 acres of land in Ross County in 1812, and it is believed that William resided on this farm with Caleb for the remainder of his life. Although William shows up on both the 1820 and 1830 census returns for Ohio, Asenath does not. As such, it can only be assumed that Asenath must have passed away prior to 1820. William, who was shown as being between 90 and 100 years of age on the 1830 census, is thought to have died in Ross County in either late 1830 or early 1831.

40. Walter Odell.
Walter Odell, the son of William Odell and Elizabeth Talbot, was born in about 1742 in Baltimore County, Maryland. He was later married in Maryland to a woman named Lucy Frizzell.
On 25 February 1784, Walter purchased part of "Minto and Rolles Chance," a tract of land consisting of 40 and ½ acres from a man named Joshua Hurd. Several months later, on 15 September 1784, Walter purchased 12 acres of land called "Bell's Park" from a Mr. Alexander Wells. On 8 April 1794, he purchased a 1 acre tract called "Jack's Delight" from Robert and William Weer, and on 28 March 1799 he had 3/4 of an acre called "Addition to Minto" laid out by the Baltimore County Surveyor. Walter later sold the above four parcels to Rezin H. Worthington on 5 December 1825.
Lucy died in Baltimore County on 22 April 1822, while Walter died there in 1828. Walters will, which had been written on 16 February 1828, was subsequently admitted for probate before the Baltimore County Court on 21 May 1828.

41. Elizabeth Odell.
Elizabeth Odell, the daughter of William Odell and Elizabeth Talbot, was born in about 1744 in Baltimore County, Maryland. She was later married in Maryland to a man named Isaiah Baker. Unfortunately, even though this couple very likely had children, I have not been able to identify any probable children with reasonable certainty. As such, no additional information is provided concerning this couple.

42. Richard Odell.
Richard Odell, the son of William Odell and Elizabeth Talbot, was born in about 1745 in Baltimore County, Maryland. Although he is known to have been married to a woman named Ann, no additional information has been found concerning her or her parentage. Richard and Ann resided in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
According to available records, it appears that Richard took the Oath of Allegiance in Anne Arundel County on 1 March 1778. Later, on 6 May 1778, Richard furnished a substitute, a man named Jesse Dority from Scotland, to serve for three months in the American Army during the Revolutionary War.
On 19 December 1783, Richard purchased 120 acres of land which was called "Shepherd's Forest" from Mr. John Sewell. He later purchased a 436 acre tract named "Wincopen Neck" from Richard and Anne Lawrence on 29 October 1791. Richard apparently got into financial difficulty in the early 1800's and was forced to sell most of his property. On 16 May 1801, he sold "Wincopen Neck" and 17 slaves to Mr. Richard Dorsey, and on 16 March 1802, he sold "Shepherd's Forest" to Joseph Ratcliff. Much of his personal property was also sold in 1805 to cover his debts.
The child listed below as (male) was abstracted from the 1790 census enumeration. Although this child is believed to be a son of Richard and Ann's, his identity has yet to be determined. It is very likely that Richard and Ann had other children.

60. Mary Odell.
Mary Odell, the daughter of James Odell and Martha Prather, was born in Prince George's County, Maryland on 16 January 1748. She was later married in Maryland to a man named Thomas Duckett. Thomas, who had been born on 24 November 1744 in Maryland, was the son of Jacob Duckett and Sarah Odell. He was also the brother of the Jacob Duckett who married Mary's sister, Sarah.
On 28 November 1773, Thomas and Mary sold their land in Frederick County, Maryland and moved to South Carolina. Only four months later, on 14 March 1774, they are found purchasing a plantation in South Carolina from a man named Samuel Bishop. This plantation, which consisted of 100 acres, was situated along the Enoree River in that portion of Ninety-Six District, South Carolina that was later formed into Laurens County, South Carolina in 1785.
On 22 March 1806, Thomas and Mary sold their land in Laurens County, South Carolina to Charles Sims and Dred Jones. According to the deed records, Thomas and Mary were residing in Newberry County, South Carolina at the time. Mary died in Newberry County, South Carolina in 1822, while Thomas died there in 1824. Thomas left a will which was dated 18 July 1822. This will was subsequently probated before the Newberry County Court on 4 October 1824.

Margaret Odell, the daughter of James Odell and Martha Prather, is believed to have been born in about 1750 in Frederick County, Maryland. She was later married in South Carolina to a man named Nicholas Gazaway Rogers (also written Gassaway Rogers and Rodgers). Gazaway and Margaret appear to have resided throughout their married life together in that portion of the Ninety-Six District of South Carolina that was later formed into Laurens County, South Carolina in 1785.
According to available information, Gazaway died on 20 August 1796 in Laurens County, South Carolina. Although Margaret is believed to have also died in Laurens County, the actual date of her death has not been determined.
The children listed below as (male) or (female) were abstracted from the 1800 census of South Carolina. Even though these are all believed to be Gazaway and Margaret's children, their identities have yet to be determined. In addition, to the best of my knowledge no complete listing of this couple’s children has been found to date. As such, the children listed below are either known, probable, or enumerated. This couple may have had additional children.

Thomas Odell, the son of James Odell and Martha Prather, was born on 15 May 1752 in Frederick County, Maryland. Thomas was apparently married twice during his life. He married his first wife in Frederick County, and even though her given name has not been determined, it is known that her maiden name was Garrett and that she was the daughter of John Garrett.
After their marriage, Thomas and his first wife continued to reside in Frederick County for a number of years. He later served as a First Lieutenant in the Frederick County militia during the Revolutionary War.
After his first wife passed away, Thomas married secondly, also in Maryland, to a woman named Grace Austin. Grace, who was a native of Wales, had been born there on 22 September 1756. Thomas, who was a Methodist Episcopal minister, died on 25 August 1827 in Brown County, Ohio. His widow, Grace, subsequently died at Odell in Tippecanoe County, Indiana on 6 July 1835.

John Odell, the son of James Odell and Martha Prather, was born in Frederick County, Maryland. He was later married in South Carolina to Mary Bourland, the daughter of William Bourland.
After their marriage, John and Mary resided in that portion of Ninety-Six District, South Carolina that was formed into Laurens County, South Carolina in 1785. In 1788, John was granted 120 acres of land in Laurens County by the State of South Carolina. This land was situated along Duncan's Creek. Later, on 26 May 1791, John and Mary purchased another 100 acre tract of land on Duncan's Creek from Aaron Moore. These lands were subsequently sold in 1795 and 1796, and by 1800, John and Mary were residing in that portion of the Pendleton District of South Carolina that was formed into Pickens County in 1825.
Although John is believed to have died on 1 October 1836 in Pickens County, South Carolina, the date and place of Marys death have not been determined.

This David Beall is believed to be the same David Beall who took the Oath of Fidelity in 1778 in Montgomery County, Maryland, and served in the 7th Company, 29th Battalion of the Montgomery County Militia during the Revolutionary War.
David and Rachel eventually moved to the state of North Carolina, where they resided for the remainder of their lives. David subsequently died in Iredale County, North Carolina in 1806, with his will being probated there on 15 May of that year. Although it is believed that Rachel also died in Iredale County, her date of death is not known at this time. The following children were named in Davids will.

71. James Odell.
James Odell, the son of John Odell and Eleanor Hendrix, was born on 10 March 1765 in Maryland. James was apparently married twice during his life. He married first to a woman named Charlotte "Lottie" Rogers (also written Rodgers) in about 1788 in South Carolina. Charlotte, who was born in about 1771 in Laurens County, South Carolina, was the daughter of Nicholas Gazaway Rogers and Margaret Odell, and a cousin of James Odell's. She subsequently died in South Carolina in about 1791.
After his first wife passed away, James married secondly, also in South Carolina, to a woman named Sarah Martindale. In 1802, James and Sarah left South Carolina and moved to the State of Ohio. By 1807, however, they had moved west into that portion of Clark County, Indiana that was later formed into Wayne County, Indiana in 1811. James and Sarah are shown in the land records as filing on 640 acres of land in Wayne County in the year it was established. After Indiana became a state in 1816, and County Commissions were established, James served on the first Board of County Commissioners for Wayne County.
In 1825, James and Sarah moved further west into that portion of the Unorganized Territory of Indiana that was later formed into Carroll County, Indiana in 1828, and it is there that they both resided for the remainder of their lives. Sarah died in Carroll County, Indiana on 20 May 1827, while James died at the home of his daughter, Eleanor, on 17 April 1845.

93. John Odle.
John Odle (also written Odell), the son of William Odell and Asenath Owings, was born on 21 September 1764 in Baltimore County, Maryland. He was later married in about 1787 to a woman named Nancy in Hampshire County, Virginia (now within West Virginia). Although it has yet to be substantiate beyond reasonable doubt, some believe that her maiden name may have been Moore. Nancy is believed to have been born on 26 August 1769.
According to a Hampshire County muster roll dated 15 June 1795, John was serving as an Ensign in Captain Jacob Slagle's Company of Militia. Within a couple of years after this, however, John and Nancy appear to have left Hampshire County and moved to that portion of the Northwest Territory that was formed into the Ohio Territory in 1799, and was later made a part of the State of Ohio in 1803. Although John and his family were residing near Richmond Dale in Ross County, Ohio when it was created in 1798, they eventually moved west into Randolph County, Indiana in about 1819.
Up until the time of his death, John operated a freight line which hauled supplies and produce between Winchester, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition, John operated a store and a hotel and tavern. He also served as the Winchester City Librarian, was an acting Justice of the Peace, and in 1831 he was elected County Treasurer for Randolph County.
John and Nancy both died in Randolph County, Indiana. John died there in 1833, while Nancy appears to have died there in about 1839 or 1840. Both were subsequently buried in the Reitenour Cemetery near Winchester in Randolph County.
The children listed below as (male) or (female) were abstracted from available pre-1850 census records. Although these are all believed to be John and Nancy's children, their identities have yet to be determined.

94. Richard Odle.
Richard Odle (also written Odell), the son of William Odell and Asenath Owings, is believed to have been born in 1766, probably in Baltimore County, Maryland. As a young man, he accompanied his parents on their move west, where they settled in Hampshire County, Virginia (now part of West Virginia). Richard is thought to have been married in about 1788 in Hampshire County to a woman named Elizabeth Dawson. Elizabeth, who had been born in 1768 in Frederick County, Maryland, was the daughter of William Dawson and Elizabeth Melott.
Richard and Elizabeth eventually left Virginia and moved to Ross County, Ohio, where they settled near his brother, John, and his family. Richard and Elizabeth resided in Ross County for approximately thirty years. In 1831, however, they sold their farm in Ohio and moved to Warren County, Indiana, where they resided for the remainder of their lives. Elizabeth died on 31 March 1841 in Warren County, while Richard died there on 8 August 1844. Both were subsequently buried in the Union Cemetery in John Q. Adams Township, Warren County, Indiana.

95. Caleb Odle.
Caleb Odle (also written Odell), the son of William Odell and Asenath Owings, was born in Maryland on 10 December 1774. Based upon available information, Caleb appears to have been married three times. Although no record of his first marriage has been found, it is believed that he may have been married in Hampshire County, Virginia (now within West Virginia) prior to moving to Ohio. Unfortunately, the identity of Caleb’s first wife has not been determined. She is believed, however, to have been the mother of two daughters by Caleb. Caleb’s first wife probably died in about 1811 in Ross County, Ohio.
When the War of 1812 broke out, Caleb enlisted as a private. He was later promoted to the rank of Captain, however, and commanded a company of volunteers from Ross County, Ohio. Caleb married for a second time on 15 September 1813 to a woman named Nancy Ann Greave in Ross County, Ohio. Nancy, who was the mother of three children by Caleb, subsequently died in Ross County, Ohio.
After Nancy passed away, Caleb married for a third time, also in Ross County, Ohio, to a woman named Elizabeth (McClintock) Gibbons on 7 February 1828. Elizabeth, who had been born on 10 June 1784 in Pennsylvania, was the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth McClintock, and the widow of William Gibbons. Elizabeth had previously married Mr. Gibbons on 24 April 1805 in Ross County, Ohio.
On 5 January 1835, Caleb and Elizabeth sold their 80 acre farm in Ross County to a man named Jeremiah Hickle for $600. The deed stated that this was the same land that Caleb and his father, William Odell/Odle, had purchased on 7 August 1812 from John McNeil. Shortly after this, Caleb and Elizabeth moved to Livingston County, Illinois. Caleb later died on 26 December 1856 in Livingston County. Although it is believed that Elizabeth also died in Livingston County, the date of her death is not known at this time. No issue are known from Caleb’s third marriage to Elizabeth.
The children listed below as (male) or (female) were abstracted from available pre-1850 census records. Although these are also believed to be Caleb's children, their identities have not been determined.

96. Lott Odle.
Lott Odle (also written Odell), the son of William Odell and Asenath Owings, was born in Maryland. He was later married in Allegany County, Maryland on 24 September 1806 to a woman named Elizabeth Tedrick (also written Tetrick). Elizabeth was the daughter of Michael Tetrick.
Lott and Elizabeth eventually moved to Ohio, where they resided for the remainder of their lives. Lott served in the War of 1812. According to available census enumerations, Lott and Elizabeth were residing in Licking County, Ohio in 1820. However, because the census records are lacking for Ohio prior to 1820, it is not known at this time when they actually moved there.
On 19 August 1837, Lott and Elizabeth purchased 340 acres of land in Licking County from a Mr. James Stanberg. This property was situated in Township 17, Range 18, of the Refugee Tract. Lott and Elizabeth later sold 14 acres of this parcel to Martin Beaver on 6 December 1838. Lott died in Licking County in 1840. Although Elizabeth is known to have survived Lott, her date and place of death have not been determined.
The children listed below as (male) or (female) were abstracted from available pre-1850 census records. Although these are all believed to be Lott and Elizabeth's children, their identities have yet to be determined.

Joshua Odell, the son of William Odell and Asenath Owings, was born in about 1780 in Maryland. He was later married in Allegany County, Maryland to a woman named Susannah Davis on 1 April 1802. Susannah, who was calculated to have been born in Maryland in 1783, was the daughter of Ebenezer Davis. During this same year, Joshua was listed as being a Sergeant in Captain Nathaniel Cochran's First Battalion of the 11th Regiment of Virginia Militia.
On 20 July 1807, Joshua and Susannah purchased 136 acres of land in Harrison County, Virginia (now within West Virginia) from Joseph and Margaret Tetrick. This land, which was situated at the head of Long Run, cost them $150. Several years later, when the War of 1812 broke out, Joshua fought in the Battle of New Orleans, where he was wounded. After the War, Joshua returned to Harrison County, where he died during the latter part of 1826. His widow, Susannah, was last found on the 1860 census of Harrison County living with their son, John. She was listed as being 77 years of age in this census, and having been born in Maryland.
