* This William Matlock represents Generation One in the following genealogy.
In reading this manuscript, please keep in mind that each individual is assigned a number as a child. Information pertaining to that individual as an adult will be found in the subsequent generation under that same assigned number.
Although an attempt was made to utilize primary source documents (birth, marriage, death, and census records, etc.) in compiling and verifying the information contained in this genealogy, some of the data that is presented was taken from secondary source material (I.G.I., published genealogies, county histories, etc.), and could not always be substantiated due to a lack of access to the source data. As a consequence, some of the information presented in this genealogy may be subject to change as additional source material becomes available.
THE MATLOCK FAMILY
GENERATION ONE1. William Matlock.
William Matlock is the earliest known member of our Matlock family to have been positively identified to date. And, even though his parentage has yet to be proven beyond all doubt, he is very likely a son of the William Matlock who was born in 1702 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died in Bedford County, Virginia in 1768. This elder William was apparently married twice during his life. Although the name of his first wife is unknown, his second wife, whom he also married in Virginia, was named Elizabeth. Unfortunately, the maiden name of this Elizabeth has not been determined.
Although there is no accurate accounting of the elder William's children, he is thought to have had at least one child, a son named David, from his first marriage. This David Matlock was born in about 1730 in Virginia, was married to a woman named Margaret, and died in 1790 in Washington County, North Carolina (now Tennessee).
From his second marriage to Elizabeth, the elder William is thought to have had at least three children. He is believed to have had a son named William, whose genealogy is presented below; a son named Valentine who was born in the 1750's in Bedford County, Virginia, was married to Mary "Polly" Shrewsbury, and died in 1825 in Wayne County, Kentucky; and a son named John who was born in Virginia and married to a woman named Margaret.
As stated above, our William Matlock is thought to be the son of William and Elizabeth Matlock, and is believed to have been born sometime during the period 1750-1755 in Virginia. He was later married in Virginia to a woman named Sarah in about 1776. Even though it has yet to be proven, she is believed by some researchers to be Sarah "Sally" Shepherd, the daughter of James Shepherd.
Sometime after their marriage, William and Sarah left Virginia and moved into that portion of Washington County, North Carolina, that had been formed into Sullivan County, Tennessee District in 1779. (Note: Washington County, North Carolina embraced the entire State of Tennessee before 1779). Although some researchers claim that Mary was their eldest child and that she was born in Virginia, available documents do not support this. Based on what can be found in the records, the earliest child to have been born in Tennessee with any certainty was Elizabeth in 1786. I personally believe that they were in Tennessee prior to this time, however.
After North Carolina ceded the Tennessee District to the United States Government and it was divided into counties, William and Sarah were residing in that part of Tennessee that was included in Knox County in 1792. And later, in 1801, when Roane County was formed from Knox County, it is in the records of that County that we find William and his family. In fact, William was one of the signers of the petition to form Roane County. Sometime prior to 1800, William appears to have purchased land along the Tennessee River, and by 1801, he was also operating a grist mill on Cave Creek.
Although a number of William’s children apparently moved in about 1812/13 to the White River country of the Indiana Territory, William appears to have remained in Roane County, where he is found paying taxes on 336 acres through the 1822/23 tax year. William did eventually move to Indiana, however, where he settled in Morgan County. William died at Mooreville in Morgan County, Indiana in 1829. His Last Will and Testament was subsequently submitted for probate before the Morgan County Court by his son, John, on 2 November 1829. Although William's wife, Sarah, is known to have survived him, the date and place of her death have not been determined.

GENERATION TWO
NOTE: Only the author's pedigree ancestor and known siblings are covered in this generation.
2. John Shepherd Matlock.
John Matlock, the son of William and Sarah Matlock, was born on 14 July 1779, probably in Virginia. As a young boy, John would have moved with his parents to Sullivan County in the Tennessee District of North Carolina. This county had been formed during the year John was born from Washington County, North Carolina. John was subsequently raised in that part of Tennessee that was eventually formed into Knox County in 1792, and then Roane County in 1801.
John Matlock is known to have been married twice during his life. He married his first wife, Eleanor Haggerty, in Roane County, Tennessee on 7 December 1801. Although Eleanor is known to have been born in Ireland on 1 May 1783, the identity of her parents has not been determined. There were also in Roane County a Prissillah Haggerty who married Joseph Hacker on 8 June 1802, and a Sarah Haggerty who married Julius Hacker on 29 October 1809. Although these could very possibly be sisters of Eleanor’s, this has not been proven.
In about 1812/13, John and Eleanor moved with a number of the Matlock clan into the Indiana Territory where they settled along the White River. During the trip, Eleanor gave birth to a son while crossing the State of Kentucky, whom they named West Walker Matlock. After arriving in the Indiana Territory, John and his family appear to have resided for a time in what was then called Knox County, but are presently Monroe and Morgan Counties.
John Matlock and his family eventually moved north into what is now Hendricks County, Indiana. In 1828, John and Henry Fowler established the first settlement in Hendricks County, which they named Union. John remained in Hendricks County until 1833, at which time he journeyed to Illinois seeking to buy land. Having purchased a small farm in La Salle County from a Mr. Harris, he moved his family there the following year. Besides John and Eleanor, five sons also moved from Indiana to Illinois. One of their sons, John Shepherd Matlock, returned to Indiana after only a short period, however.
In 1834, John sold the Harris property to Robert Ford and William Burns, subsequently purchasing another farm from James Ford. This farm was also situated in La Salle County, and covered the present site of Pavilion near Yorkville. During this same year, the first Sunday school to be held in that part of Illinois met in the home of John and Eleanor Matlock. In 1841, when Kendall County was formed from parts of La Salle and Kane Counties, John's farm was included in that County. Eleanor, who died at Yorkville in La Salle County (now within Kendall County) on 9 February 1839, was subsequently buried in the Pavilion Cemetery.
After Eleanor passed away, John married for a second time to a woman named Polly Oatman. This marriage took place on 27 November 1839 in La Salle County, Illinois. John died at Yorkville in Kendall County, Illinois on 5 August 1846. His will, which had been written on 6 July 1846, was subsequently admitted for probate before the Kendall County Court on 3 November 1846. John was also buried in the Pavilion Cemetery. Whatever became of Polly Oatman has not been determined.

3. William Matlock.
William Matlock, the son of William and Sarah Matlock, is thought to have been born in about 1780, probably in Virginia. As a young boy, William would have moved with his parents to Sullivan County in the Tennessee District of North Carolina. This county had been formed in 1779 from Washington County, North Carolina. He was subsequently raised in that part of Tennessee that was eventually formed into Knox County in 1792, and then Roane County in 1801. William was apparently married twice during his life. He married his first wife, Nancy Kitchen, on 29 September 1801 in Knox County, Tennessee. There were no issue from his first marriage.
William subsequently married for a second time on 4 January 1803 to a woman named Sarah "Sally" Walker in Roane County, Tennessee. Sally was the daughter of George Walker and Eleanor Hicks. In about 1812/13, William and Sally appear to have moved with several other family members into the White River area of the Indiana Territory. In 1816, they purchased a farm in that portion of Knox County, Indiana that is presently within Monroe County, Indiana. In 1818, William served as a Justice of the Peace for Monroe County, and in 1823, he was made an Associate Circuit Court Judge. William died in Monroe County, Indiana during the month of November 1826. His will, which had been written on 3 November 1826, was admitted for probate before the Monroe County Court on 18 November 1826.

4. Mary "Polly" Matlock.
Mary Matlock, the daughter of William and Sarah Matlock, was calculated to have been born in 1782 in Virginia. This information was abstracted from the 1850 census of Roane County, Tennessee. As a young girl, Mary would have moved with her parents to Sullivan County in the Tennessee District of North Carolina. This county had been formed in 1779 from Washington County, North Carolina. She was subsequently raised in that part of Tennessee that was eventually formed into Knox County in 1792, and then Roane County in 1801. Mary was later married in North Carolina to a man named Thomas Littleton in 1794. Thomas, who was born in North Carolina in about 1768, was the son of William Littleton and Sarah Cottingham.
Although Mary and Thomas appear to have moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1797, they eventually settled in Roane County, Tennessee, where they are believed to have resided for the remainder of their lives.

James Matlock, the son of William and Sarah Matlock, is thought to have been born in about 1784, in either Virginia or what is today Tennessee. As a young boy, James would have resided with his parents in Sullivan County in the Tennessee District of North Carolina. This county had been formed in 1779 from Washington County, North Carolina. He was subsequently raised in that part of Tennessee that was eventually formed into Knox County in 1792, and then Roane County in 1801. James was later married in Tennessee to a woman named Rosanna Wood on 5 January 1810.
Within a couple of years after their marriage, James and Rosanna moved to the White River country of the Indiana Territory and settled in what was then Knox County, but is presently Monroe County, Indiana. According to available land records, James acquired a number of lots in Bloomington Township in 1816. James and his family remained in Monroe County until 1828, at which time they moved to Hendricks County, Indiana. James owned a tavern at Danville in Hendricks County, which he operated until his death. James died in about 1832 at Danville.

6. Elizabeth Matlock.
Elizabeth Matlock, the daughter of William and Sarah Matlock, was calculated to have been born in 1786 in Sullivan County, Tennessee District, North Carolina. She was later married in about 1800 to a man named Thomas C. Walker. Thomas, who was born in about 1781, was the son of John Walker and Nancy Sullivan.
Elizabeth and Thomas appear to have moved to Hendricks County, Indiana in about 1820. Thomas apparently died in Hendricks County, as Elizabeth is found living there alone on the 1850 census. Sometime after the census was taken, however, Elizabeth apparently moved to Mahaska County, Iowa to be near some of her children. It is believed that Elizabeth died in Mahaska County, Iowa in 1857.

8. David Matlock.
David Matlock, the son of William and Sarah Matlock, was calculated from his tombstone to have been born on 20 December 1788 in Hawkins County in the Tennessee District of North Carolina. He was later married on 31 December 1808 to a woman named Nancy Agnes Lee in Roane County, Tennessee. Nancy, who had been born in the Greenville District of South Carolina on 16 April 1789, was the daughter of William Lee and his second wife, Sarah McMullin. She was also the sister of the Sarah Lee who married David’s brother, George.
Several years after their marriage, David and Nancy moved to the White River country of the Indiana Territory and settled in what was then Knox County, but is presently Monroe County. According to available land records, David acquired a number of lots in Bloomington Township in 1816. 9. George Matlock.
George Matlock, the son of William and Sarah Matlock, is thought to have been born in about 1790 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He later married in about 1812 to a woman named Sarah "Sally" Lee in Roane County, Tennessee. Sarah, who had been born in the Greenville District of South Carolina on 1 August 1794, was the daughter of William Lee and his second wife, Sarah McMullin. She was also the sister of the Nancy Lee who married George’s brother, David.
During the early 1800's, George and his family moved to Delaware County in the Indiana Territory, where they appear on the 1820 census enumeration. In about 1823, however, George moved to Hendricks County, Indiana, where several of his brothers had also recently settled. In 1824, George and three other individuals each donated 20 acres of land to be used as the site for establishing the town of Danville. Two years later, on 25 October 1826, George died from wounds he received during an altercation with his brother-in-law, Samuel K. Barlow.
On 12 November 1834, nearly eight years after George was killed, his widow, Sarah, remarried in Hendricks County to a man named John Thompson. John, who was a Baptist minister and farmer by trade, was a widower at the time. Although John and Sarah moved to Marion County, Indiana shortly after their marriage, within a few years they moved west into Lee County, Iowa. John subsequently died in Lee County in 1857. His will was probated there on 16 October 1857.
After John passed away, two of Sarah's nephews, William and John Barlow, came to Iowa and took her to Oregon. Sarah died on 23 July 1877 at the home of Elizabeth (Barlow) Hedgle at Gervais in Marion County, Oregon.

10. Rosanna "Rosey" Matlock.
Rosanna Matlock, the daughter of William and Sarah Matlock, is thought to have been born in about 1792 in Knox County, Tennessee. She was later married to a man named David R. Brazeale in Roane County, Tennessee on 22 January 1812.
David apparently died in Roane County, Tennessee in 1848, as during the October 1848 term of the Roane County Court, the County Commissioners furnished "one years provisions to the widow & family of David R. Brazeale, deceased." Although David does not appear to have left a will, on 6 February 1849 an inventory of his estate was made, and a list of the estate property that had been sold was submitted to the Roane County Court during the March 1849 term.
Rosanna subsequently married for a second time, also in Roane County, to a man named William Ballard on 6 December 1849. William and Rosanna, along with Rosanna's son, Jesse Brazeale, are shown as residing in the same household on the 1850 census. William subsequently died in 1856 in Roane County, and because there was no mention of Rosanna in his will, it is assumed that she pre-deceased him.

13. Nancy Matlock.
Nancy Matlock, the daughter of William and Sarah Matlock, was born in Knox County, Tennessee in about 1801. She was later married to a man named William Kitchen. Because of Nancy's age at the time her parents moved to the Indiana Territory, it can only be concluded that she married William in Indiana.
According to the 1830 census of Indiana, William and Nancy were residing in Morgan County, Indiana, along with one daughter between 5 and 10 years of age, and another daughter under 5 years of age. William and Nancy were later found in the Morgan County deed records selling their one-ninth share of the land they inherited from her father, William Matlock, to Samuel Moore.
William and Nancy later moved to Clay County, Indiana, where they were last found in the deed records selling land to Charles Kitchen on 8 October 1839.

He was later married in Hendricks County, Indiana to a woman named Elizabeth Ballard on 8 September 1825. Elizabeth, who was born on 9 March 1807 in Ohio, was the daughter of William Ballard and Mary Ramsey.
Shortly after their last child was born, William and Elizabeth moved to Oscalusia, Iowa where they joined an emigrant train to Oregon. They left in the Spring of 1847 and arrived at Oregon City, Oregon in December of that year. Upon arriving in Oregon, William and his family spent several days at the Whitman Mission, but left there just prior to an Indian raid. Mr. Whitman and his wife and several others were killed during that raid.
When gold was found in California in 1849, William left his family in Oregon and went there. He returned to Oregon in 1850, however, settling on a section of land northeast of Oregon City. 19. John Shepherd Matlock, Jr.
John Shepherd Matlock, Jr., the son of John Shepherd Matlock and his first wife, Eleanor Haggerty, was born on 16 February 1812, probably in Knox County, Tennessee since he is said to have been born near Knoxville. At the age of one year, John accompanied his parents on the journey to the Indiana Territory. John grew up in Indiana, living for a number of years in Monroe County, and then later residing in Hendricks County to the north.
Sometime in the spring of 1834 John moved with his parents to La Salle County, Illinois. He did not remain in Illinois for long, however, and soon returned to Hendricks County, Indiana. In late 1834, or early 1835, John moved north to Wabash in Wabash County, Indiana where he secured a contract to construct a portion of the Wabash and Erie Canal. This canal, which had been authorized by Congress to connect for navigation purposes the waters of the Wabash River and Lake Erie, was completed in 1836. When his contract on the Wabash and Erie Canal expired, John secured another for the construction of a canal near Indianapolis.
On 26 August 1836, just prior to his leaving for the job near Indianapolis, John was married at Wabash to a woman named Mary Banta Cassatt. Mary, who had been born on 28 December 1818 in Mercer County, Kentucky, was the daughter of David Cassatt and Polly Banta. Her father, David, had brought his family to Wabash County in 1834 from Parke County, Indiana, and had also secured a contract to construct a portion of the Wabash and Erie Canal. In the spring of 1840, John and Mary purchased a farm at La Fontaine in Wabash County, where they resided for the remainder of their lives. During his later years, John was made one of the Superintendents to oversee the construction of the National Road across Indiana.
John subsequently died in Wabash County, Indiana on 11 September 1879. Mary, on the other hand, passed away on 17 February 1889 at the home of her son-in-law, Isaac Ferguson, in Owen County, Indiana. Both John and Mary are buried in the Stone Cemetery of the Boundary Line Church at La Fontaine, Indiana.

He was later married in Hendricks County, Indiana to a woman named Almira Ballard on 24 September 1844. Although Joseph and Almira lived for short periods in a number of locations, they spent the majority of their lives in Wabash County, Indiana.
Joseph studied law as a young man, and in 1854 he ran for public office. He was subsequently elected that year as the District Prosecutor for that portion of Indiana that included Wabash County. In 1856, however, he was elected to the office of Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. In about 1860, Joseph and Almira moved to Kosciusko County, Indiana, where they remained for approximately six years.
In 1866, the town of Wabash in Wabash County was incorporated and elections were held for various offices. Joseph returned to Wabash at this time and ran for the office of Mayor. He was subsequently elected to that position and became the first mayor of Wabash, Indiana. Although Joseph and Almira later moved to Peru in Miami County, Indiana, they eventually ended up in White County, Indiana. Almira died at Monticello in White County, Indiana during the month of February 1876. Her remains were taken back to Wabash County for burial, however.
During the following year, Joseph traveled to Elgin in Kane County, Illinois, where he married for a second time to a woman named Julia H. Allen. This second marriage took place on 16 April 1877 at Elgin. Joseph, who served as a lawyer and Judge at Monticello up until the time of his death, died without issue on 29 December 1878.
24. Henry Harrison Matlock.
Henry Matlock, the son of John Shepherd Matlock and his second wife, Polly Oatman, was born at Yorkville in La Salle County, Illinois (now part of Kendall County, Illinois) on 17 October 1840. He was later married in Kendall County, Illinois to a woman named Theresa B. Pettit on 31 October 1858. Theresa, who was also a native of Illinois, was calculated to have been born there in 1843.
According to available census data for Illinois, Henry and Theresa were residing in Little Rock Township in Kendall County in 1860. Shortly thereafter, Henry enlisted in the Union Army, serving in Company K of the 127th Regiment from Kendall County. Although Henry and Theresa were residing at Muskegon in Muskegon County Michigan in 1870, by 1880 they were again residing La Salle County, Illinois, where Henry worked as an auctioneer.
Unfortunately, neither the date, nor the place, of Henry’s death have been determined. At this time it can only be assumed that he died in either Illinois or California, as Theresa is subsequently found in both the 1900 and 1910 censuses residing, as a widow, at Los Angeles in Los Angeles County, California. According to both of these censuses she was employed as a domestic servant by a private family. Theresa was last found in the 1920 census residing with her son, David, and his wife at El Centro in Imperial County, California. David was working as a deputy sheriff at the Imperial County Jail at the time.

His plow, however, was discovered many years later, firmly embedded in a large tree. A section of that tree, with the plow intact, is now preserved in the Wabash County Historical Museum at Wabash, Indiana.

As a consequence, Hugh apparently died in Whitman County, Washington prior to 1910. Even though Mary is also believed to have died in Whitman County, Washington, her date of death has yet to be determined.
