THE LINDSAY / LINDSEY FAMILY

GENERATION ONE

1. David Lindsay.

David Lindsay (also written Linsay, Linsey, and Lindsey) is the earliest known progenitor of our Lindsay family to have been positively identified to date. Although very little is known about David, the earliest references which were found that pertain to him were found in the Frederick County, Virginia Court and Militia records. Those entries are as follows:

Court Records

1749 - Terrance Carrol ordered to pay David and Catherine Lindsey 50 pounds of tobacco each for three days attendance in court on his behalf.

June 1752 - David Linsey ordered to pay John Funk 1 pound, 16 shillings.

June 1767 - William Dempster ordered to pay David and Catherine Lindsey 50 pounds of tobacco each for their attendance in court to testify in a suit with Ralph Withers.

Militia Records

2 September 1755 - David Lindsey is listed as a member of the Frederick County Militia in the Company commanded by Captain Marquis Calmes. David was one of the Militia members living in that part of Frederick County that later became Clarke County, Virginia in 1836. Also listed were: Captain John Lindsey, and privates John Lindsey, Abraham Lindsey, Isaac Lindsey, and Edmund Lindsey.

Based upon these entries, David and his family were evidently residing in Frederick County during the period 1749-1767, but how long before or after this period is not known. Although it is known that David was married prior to 1749 to a woman named Catherine, nothing else has been found concerning her, or her parents. David and Catherine are believed, however, to have been married in Frederick County, Virginia.

Even though it has yet to be proven, it is very possible that David was related to the other Lindsays/Lindseys listed above, and that Captain John Lindsey may even have been his father. Captain John Lindsey was found in some of the earliest Frederick County records as taking up land in 1735, and David named a son John. Regardless of the above, all available data suggests that David was probably born someplace other than Frederick County, and moved there as a child with his parents.

Sometime after 1767, David took his family and moved southwest into that part of Virginia that was subsequently made into Botetourt County, Virginia in 1769, but is now part of Greenbriar County, West Virginia. David settled on a parcel of land adjoining the Greenbriar River, and it is there that he resided until his death. David and Catherine, as well as several of their children, are found in a number of Botetourt County, Virginia and Greenbriar County, West Virginia records during the 1770's and 1780's, including the ledger books of the Mathews Trading Post. Catherine and her son, John, and daughter, Jane, are later shown in the "Virginia Heads of Families, Greenbriar County, 1783-1786."

In one particular document, evidence was found that David and Catherine were indeed the parents of our John. A bill of sale was discovered in the deed records of Greenbriar County which states:

"I hereby acknowledge that I have sold unto Catherine Linsay, my mother, a Negro Woman named Nan (which I had of Rob't Allen), all the bed and household Furniture thats in the House, and all the working Tools of whatever kind, on the plantation of my property, the Right of which I hereby deliver unto said Catherine, her heirs and assigns for ever, for and in Consideration of a Bond she had on me of Five hundred pounds penalty, for her dower as Widow and Relict of David Lindsay, my Father, as Witness thereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this 11th July 1785."

            John Lindsey (Seal)

            Test: William Ward, James Anderson.

David Lindsay died during the latter part of 1772, or possibly early 1773, in that portion of Botetourt County, Virginia that is now within Greenbriar County, West Virginia. This is confirmed by the 1773 entries in the Mathews Trading Post ledger, which refer to Catherine Lindsay as being a widow.

GENERATION TWO

2. Robert Lindsay.

Robert Lindsay (also written Linsay, Linsey, and Lindsey), the son of David and Catherine Lindsay, was born in Frederick County, Virginia. He was later found in the records of the Mathews Trading Post making purchases of various and sundry goods during the years 1771 through 1776. Robert was also shown in the March and August 1775 list of Botetourt County, Virginia titheables who were residing in the Greenbriar area. Robert died in late 1775 or early 1776 in that portion of Botetourt County, Virginia that is now Greenbriar County, West Virginia.

Although Robert was shown on a 1776 roster of men called into service during the Revolutionary War, a notation showed that he was exempt from service because he was deceased. It is not known if Robert was married at the time of his death, or if he had any children.

3. John Valentine Lindsay.

John Lindsay (also identified in various records as John Linsay, Linsey, and Lindsey), was the son of David and Catherine Lindsay. He was born in Frederick County, Virginia in about 1757. This year was calculated from a deposition he gave on 13 December 1803 at the Boone County, Kentucky Courthouse, in which he stated he was "about 46 years" of age. John is thought to have remained in Frederick County with his parents until sometime after 1767, at which time the family appears to have moved southwest into that portion of Virginia that was later formed into Botetourt County in 1769, but is now situated within Greenbriar County, West Virginia. John was shown in the March and August 1775 list of Botetourt County, Virginia titheables as living in the Greenbriar area.

While residing in Virginia, John was married to a woman named Anna Christy. Anna, who was a native of Culpeper County, Virginia, was the daughter of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett. Although no record of their marriage has been found, it is believed to have taken place in about 1777 in Greenbriar County, Virginia (now within West Virginia). Greenbriar County had been formed from Botetourt County, Virginia in 1777.

In January 1780, John was granted 800 acres of land by the Greenbriar County Court "by right of settlement prior to 1 January 1778," the date Greenbriar County became functional. These lands were situated on the north side of the Greenbriar River. According to available court records, John and two of his sisters were involved in a number of lawsuits during the 1780's, and John served on several juries during 1783 and 1784. In 1785, John obtained an additional 236 acres of land by Warrant.

Although the disposition of all of John's land holdings has not been determined, on 26 February 1788, he sold a portion of his lands to Andrew Hamilton and William Elliot. Soon after this, he and his family appear to have moved further west into the State of Kentucky, where they settled in Scott County.

Unfortunately, little information concerning John has been found covering the time he spent in Kentucky. His will, which was written on 29 September 1805, was admitted for probate before the Scott County Court during the January 1806 term, thereby indicating the period within which he passed away.

John's widow, Anna, remarried several years after John's death to a man named Spencer Stone. Although this marriage is believed to have taken place in about 1818 in Scott County, Kentucky, many of the Scott County records were destroyed in a fire and no documents have been found to confirm this. Spencer Stone was the father of the Elias Barbee Stone who married Catherine Houston Lindsay, one of John and Anna Lindsay's daughters.

Although Anna and Spencer probably resided for a short time in Scott County, they eventually moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky, where Spencer owned a small farm on the banks of the Dix River. This farm was located in that portion of Lincoln County, Kentucky that was later formed into Boyle County in 1842. It was there that Spencer Stone passed away in 1838. Shortly after this, Anna moved to Fayette County, Indiana to be near some of her children from her first marriage to John Lindsay. Although she later wrote her will on 8 October 1844 in Fayette County, it was never recorded for probate. It is assumed, however, that she died in Fayette County during the latter part of 1844.

The children listed below have all been identified through correspondence and other documents and records as being John and Anna’s.

8. Robert "Robin" Lindsey.

Robert Lindsey (also written Lindsay), the son of John Lindsay and Anna Christy, was born in Greenbriar County, Virginia (now part of West Virginia). Although the name of Robert’s wife has not been determined, he is believed to have been married in about 1806/07 in Scott County, Kentucky.

Robert and his brother, John, acquired land from Spencer Stone and their mother, Anna (Christy) Lindsay Stone, on 28 May 1818. Robert was later enumerated on the 1820 census of Scott County, Kentucky. The last document in which our Robert Lindsey was found, was a mortgage between Robert and Mr. B. S. Chambers. This mortgage was for $600 and dated 20 December 1826.

Even though the actual date of Robert’s death has not been determined, it is believed that both he and his wife died in Scott County, Kentucky in about 1828/29. With the exception of his eldest daughter, all of Robert’s other daughters were shown residing with his unmarried sister, Rebecca, on the 1830 census. Unfortunately, what became of his sons has not been determined.

The offspring listed below as (male) or (female) were abstracted from the 1820 census of Scott County, Kentucky. Although these are all believed to be Robert's children, their identities have not been determined as yet.

NOTE: Although there was a Robert Lindsey listed on both the 1820 and 1830 censuses of Scott County, Kentucky, I do not believe that these are the same Robert Lindsey. The children who were listed with the Robert Lindsey on the 1820 census do not match very well with the children listed on the 1830 census. The Robert Lindsey who is shown on the 1820 census is believed to be our Robert Lindsey, while the Robert Lindsey who is shown on the 1830 census had twelve children, and is known to be the Robert Lindsey who settled in Highland County, Ohio in 1834.

Rebecca Lindsey (also written Lindsay), the daughter of John Lindsay and Anna Christy, was calculated to have been born in 1784 in Greenbriar County, Virginia (now part of West Virginia). She was residing with her niece, Ann Lindsey Fox, at the time of her death. Rebecca apparently remained single throughout her life and died without issue on 15 April 1854 in Trimble County, Kentucky. Her death record indicates that she was the daughter of John and Ann Lindsey and that she was born in Greenbriar County, Virginia (now within West Virginia).

11. Sarah "Sally" Lindsey.

Sarah Lindsey (also written Lindsay), the daughter of John Lindsay and Anna Christy, was probably born in Greenbriar County, Virginia (now part of West Virginia). She was later married to a man named Mitchell. No additional information has been found concerning this couple.

13. Frances Lindsey.

Frances Lindsey (also written Lindsay), the daughter of John Lindsay and Anna Christy, was probably born in Scott County, Kentucky. Frances was apparently married twice during her life. She married first to a man named James Bryant in Kentucky.  No issue are known from Frances Lindsey’s first marriage to James.

After her first husband passed away, Frances married for a second time on 24 May 1820 to a man named John Embree (also written Embry) in Lincoln County, Kentucky. John, who is believed to have been born in Orange County, Virginia, was the son of John Embree and Frances "Fanny" Burris. This was John’s second marriage as he had previously been married on 5 November 1792 to a woman named Susannah Prewitt in Mercer County, Kentucky.

Frances and John later moved to Indiana, where they settled in Wayne County. Although they were still residing in Wayne County in 1848, they apparently moved shortly thereafter to Howard County, Missouri. John died on 4 September 1852 in Howard County, Missouri. After John died, Frances apparently moved back to Wayne County, Indiana, where she died on 18 December 1862. No issue are known from Frances' second marriage either.

14. Catherine Houston Lindsey.

Catherine Lindsey (also written Lindsay), the daughter of John Lindsay and Anna Christy, was born on 17 September 1795 in Scott County, Kentucky. She was later married in Scott County to a man named Elias Barbee Stone. Although no record of their marriage has been found to date, it is thought to have taken place in about 1812/13. Elias, who was born on 20 February 1790 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, was the son of Spencer Stone and Nancy "Sally" Smith.

Elias was a miller and farmer by trade, and shortly after their marriage, Catherine and Elias returned to Lincoln County where they settled on a small farm situated along the Hanging Fork tributary of the Dix River. They remained there for approximately six years. Sometime during the year 1822, however, Catherine and Elias moved to Indiana, settling first in Fayette County, and then later in Wabash County.

Elias and Catherine both died in Wabash County, Indiana. Elias died there on 27 July 1870, while Catherine died at the home of her nephew, Hiram Lindsey, in Liberty Township on 21 August 1873. Both were subsequently buried in the Boundary Line Church Cemetery near La Fontaine in Wabash County. This cemetery, which was situated upon land that Elias had acquired for such a purpose, was originally established as a private burying ground in 1863. Its use was later opened to the general public, however.
