THE GIBBS FAMILY

GENERATION ONE

NOTE:  Information pertaining to the ancestors of John Gibbs, as well as additional historical information pertaining to the Gibbs/Gibbes family in England, can be found in the genealogy entitled "From Castle to Country, A Gibbs Family History From 1378 to Present." by Stanley Eugene Gibbs.

1. John Gibbs.

John Gibbs (also written Gibbes), the son of Gregory Gibbes and his first wife, was born in about 1600 in Dorsetshire, England.  In 1619, John sailed from the port of Weymouth in Dorsetshire aboard the ship "Supply," bound for the English Colony of Jamestown in Virginia.  Having fortunately survived the massacre of Virginia colonists by Indians in 1622, John’s name was later found on a list of inhabitants which were residing at Jordan’s Journey.  This list was dated 16 February 1623.  Two years later, in 1625, John was commissioned a Lieutenant of Militia at Jordan’s Journey.

Although John was later married, neither the name of his wife, nor their place of marriage, have been determined with any certainty. After his marriage, John and his wife appear to have remained at Jordan’s Journey, which had been incorporated into Charles City County, Virginia in 1634.  He later served as a Gentleman Justice of Charles City County during the period 1655 through 1658.

According to available Court Order Books for Charles City County, John died in Charles City County on 10 January 1658/59. Although his wife survived him, her date and place of death are not known.

On 5 May 1707, John was appointed Surveyor of Highways from Brandon to Grant Church, and from Turkes Ferry over Gardner’s Swamp.  Although John was released from this position on 7 December 1708, he was re-appointed on 7 April 1714.
